Hi, new to this forum. I have a 2004 VW Golf GT, with the 2.0L FSI engine. Was running great before Xmas last year when suddenly it started to chug at idle, the whole engine shakes rhythmically. You can see and hear the throttle body flap opening and closing slightly, which as far as I can tell, is what's causing it to not idle properly.
First place I took it said the two engine breather hoses were leaking. They were, so I replaced them. Still chugging.
Then I replaced the cambelt, primarily as the water pump was leaking and I thought while everything is apart I might as well, didn't make any difference to how the car idled.
Then we had it into the local stealership who diagnosed a problem with the timing chain, tensioner or camshaft adjuster unit. Apparently when they turned it over by hand they noticed a fault with the adjuster unit.
I've replaced all of those parts with new and, a new set of coils as it suddenly had two misfires. After all that I'm back where I started with the engine continuing to chug at idle.
The faults it's throwing up now are "map controlled engine cooling thermostat -F265, Short circuit to B+Upper limit exceeded and 17748 Active/static camshaft position sensor -G40, engine speed sensor -G28, incorrect allocation - upper limit exceeded.
Should I swap these parts for new, pretty much impossible to test as far as I can see.
This morning when I started it from cold it actually ran ok for about 20 seconds before reverting to the usual idle problem. I've read the 1.8s have an oil pickup problem, I'm wondering if there might be sludge in the pan that takes a few seconds to get sucked up and kicks off the idle problem??
