Resolved 00778 Steering Angle Sensor

I inherited a 2009 Jetta TDI DSG from my son after a mech unit failure. In the meanwhile, the ABS module failed. It is the MK60EC1 system. I replaced the 1K0 907 379 AE with a new OEM 1K0 907 379 AJ from ECS (with assurances, by VIN, that it was the correct one :rolleyes:

)
It accepted the old coding with the addition of the two zeros. I "mostly" followed the steps in the Wiki, I might have swapped some steps, had some emergent situations come up.
to the point: I have the following DTCs 01486 System Function Test Activated, and 00778 Steering Angle Sensor 005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation.

What I am looking for is some "this is how I did it" advice, because I am not at all sure I was doing it correctly. And if I understood correctly, the 01486 wont go away until I can get the 00778 resolved.

This was the instruction that I intended to follow. I did the coding, then I had to leave, I came back and did the Basic settting for the Hydraulic intake valves (quite the challenge for a 63 year old with a cane!), then set about clearing the other ABS codes.
The SAS Calibration was attempted as written. Several attempts landed the value in field #1 at -1.49 or less(closer to 0), but I never got the "OK" in field #2.
Did I do the operations in a "fatal" wrong order?

I think with the only fault being the steering angle sensor calibration, it should be possible to do that calibration stand-alone.

Have you looked at MVB 004.1? Start the engine. Turn the steering wheel all the way one way, then all the way the other way while observing / checking steering angle readings for plausibility.

After several more unsuccessful attempts, the calibration came in okay! The only difference in my methodology was several "angry" taps on the steering wheel. Turned the wheel to full lock in both directions and held for a long count of 10. Centered the steering wheel at 0 degrees using 03-Brake Electronics Measuring Blocks-08 Group 004. Held it there while I drove the car forward approximately 40 feet. Stopped the car and in around 20 seconds it said OK.
I completed the ESP System Function Test, now all is well and good, except for the glow plug (which my tracking# shows has flown/driven past my hous for the third time today :mad:

)
I believe we can mark this one resolved, for me at least!
