2018 Q7 attempting to replace the OEM AGM with a Lithium 69AH battery with a LifePo4 (from BMW F80). The battery is basically a drop in for a similar AGM.

The problem I am having:

When I set the coding to "Lithium FeP" as well as other parameters 69ah, random serial #, etc. the car starts up and reports "electrical system" malfunction. Checking the charge parameters shows the battery is not receiving any charge and is discharging at 30A while the car is running, indicating that the alternator is not charging at all.

If I simply change coding to "Fleece" without changing the battery, then I do not get any errors, however I read the alternator charge circuit running at 160A when the battery is full, this concerns me that the system is not using a Lithium charge curve obviously.

I don't think Audi ever shipped any of these cars with an LFP battery, so just because the Gateway has an option that's so-labelled does not mean it actually works. The fact that it reports an electrical system malfunction leads me to suspect that the Gateway doesn't have any parameters to match this option.

If I simply change coding to "Fleece" without changing the battery, then I do not get any errors, however I read the alternator charge circuit running at 160A when the battery is full, this concerns me that the system is not using a Lithium charge curve obviously.
I'm sure you're aware, "Fleece" is the German term for an AGM battery, so I'm not exactly surprised that it's not using an LFP curve there.

As far as I know, Lithium batteries purpose built for vehicles have an integrated BMS and most of the ones built are not supplied as factory-fitted parts but as drop-in replacements for lead-acid, EFB or AGM batteries and are therefore happiest when being paired with a charging strategy of the battery type it is intended to replace. Now, since I assume this is a factory fitted lithium battery (does it have a built in extra connector for communication?) the above may not apply, and I agree with what Uwe said. But the best source of info may be to try and find out how the charging system of the F80 is configured, both physically and what its charging strategy (min/max voltages, charging current, target SOC range, etc) is. I suspect its not that different from an AGM battery (again, mostly because of the integrated BMS).

Thank you, at this point I suspect my best option is to ditch the Lithium battery (maybe I can sell it on mrkplc for $800 :o) and go buy an old fashioned AGM.

The BMW Lithium battery does have a 2 pin management plug. As I write this it makes me wonder if redirecting the Audi LIN to this port would change anything.

That said, I did some further testing and recorded the data below for informational purposes.

With the Lithium battery and Lithium FeP selected the charge data is as follows at idle. Dashboard reports electrical system malfunction and charge system is disabled.

Battery version-Rated battery capacity: 69 Ah
Battery version-Battery technology: Lithium FeP
Battery voltage: 13.892 V
Battery current: -29.296 A
Battery charge level: 98%
Usable battery charge: 51 Ah
Battery voltage at rest: 12.8V

With the Lithium battery and AGM (Fleece) selected the charge system has no errors, however the charge current is way overdriving. This is a typical issue with Lithium batteries connected to standard charging systems. This is one of the reasons my van build outs have DC-DC chargers between the alternator charge system and the Lithium battery banks.

Battery version-Rated battery capacity: 69 Ah
Battery version-Battery technology: Fleece
Battery voltage: 13.985 V
Battery current: 126.800 A
Battery charge level: 96%
Usable battery charge: 55 Ah
Battery voltage at rest: 12.8V

With a standard AGM battery (2016) and correct adaptation set.

Battery version-Rated battery capacity: 92 Ah
Battery version-Battery technology: Fleece
Battery voltage: 14.745V
Battery current: 11.683A
Battery charge level: 65%
Usable battery charge: 45 Ah
Battery voltage at rest: 12.3V

If it has an extra 2-wire connection, then all bets are off. There is no telling what is happening on the battery side (= what the BMS is doing) without it connected or what its expecting, or if its an integral component (control unit) of the charging system of the BMW.

Which was the reason why I asked if it had an extra connector. :)

I don’t really see an issue in using a lithium battery, but use one intended to replace a conventional battery. Your lithium battery is designed as part of a larger system and will probably never function as intended without comms to the rest of the vehicle (and the rest of the vehicle being able to talk the same language and be configured for it, which the car isn’t). It also makes any readings you check on the car side useless for multiple reasons; unable to know what the BMS does or doesn’t do and why, how the gateway determines its values, charging strategy and why, etc.

For what it's worth I ran a Braille lithium battery, which is a designed drop in replacement for "standard" battery, in my Golf TDI. I had no issues (eventually went back to AGM for the standby power).

I did code for Lithium, although my car does not have the battery monitoring module. And the Brailles do not have internal BMS so no extra connector. They use an internal cutoff device (per their FAQ) to prevent damage.

Agreed on the extra connector point. However it is very unlikely that any 12v lithium battery would exist without an internal BMS, These batteries appear to be build with 4x leV60F cells. All lithium batteries require a BMS to balance power within the cells. However in this case I would guess that you are referring to an external DC-DC converter which would manage the voltage load from the alternator.

True, as in all lithium batteries for vehicles that I have ever seen have an integrated BMS. However, the difference is that OP’s battery sourced from a BMW is not designed as a standalone component, but needs comms with the rest of the vehicle.

Will probably shit its pants and go berserk !

Go try it and report back.

I won't pretend to know what they have going on inside their battery though I'm not sure there's any reason for them to lie in their FAQ. In any case I had no issues with the battery.

There are a few people in the GolfMk7 form running it in their gassers.

I’m not debating that, however OP’s battery is a different type sourced from a vehicle that came with one from the factory that is not a standalone component, but is an active part of the charging system with communication to the rest of the car.

So with my 2022 Tiguan. I have been using it since match of 2023 without any issues. The coding options that I went with were Battery type lithium ion, brand of battery xs power, serial number #whatever, and the correct 40ah of lithium. The battery I used for under the hood is a XS power pwr-s5 4800. This is a 10ah lithium battery that has met my need to just run the car by itself. I have 3 more in the trunk to support my audio system upgrades. I don't know if Audi has an option for lithium ion in 2018 and I don't have any experience with Audi vehicles.

Gotcha. And I guess I should have included @SeattleMatt in my response about. Completely in agreement that the battery op was trying to use needs to communicate with the car. I was just noting that there are automotive lithium batteries that do not have built in BMS. Granted I think the XS Power units with BMS are probably a better choice than the Braille for a daily driver.

If they truly have no BMS at all, how do they balance the cells?

How do they prevent over-charging? Anything over 14.4V on a 4S LFP battery is bad news.

How do they prevent over-discharge? Rechargeable lithium cells take lots of damage points if the spend much time at less than 2.5V per cell.

This is directly from their FAQ, answering a question about BMS...

A Battery Management System, or BMS, keeps a battery operating within normal parameters. Braille Battery does not use a BMS because it is another possible point of failure in batteries, thereby reducing overall reliability. Plus adding a BMS, increases the weight of a battery and can increase the size of the battery case.
Instead, all our cells have a current interrupt device (CID) integrated into the top of the cell to mechanically disconnect the current flow through the cell if it experiences abnormal operating conditions.

That said, I don't have any more answers 😁😁😁

And so that I'm not accused of making this up... https://braillebattery.com/faq/#1676468163899-87bdd44e-adfe

Sure, a BMS is a potential point of failure, but it's a trade-off against the failures that might occur due to over-voltage during charging, the pack going out of balance, your car charging the battery at below-freezing temperatures, or over-discharge, the latter of which they clearly admit:

Can I Over-Discharge A Lithium Battery?
Yes. As our batteries do not include a BMS system, you can over-discharge the battery and cause permanent damage, and possibly make the battery inoperable....

Anyway, running a multi-cell LFP battery without a BMS strikes me as, "A bold strategy, Cotton..."
