Hi everyone,

I am reaching out for some much needed help/guidance.

Please bear with me, I have almost no mechanical knowledge or mechanical skills.

I recently purchased a 2008 Golf mk5 GTI - I purchased the car without a "roadworthy certificate" but was assured by the seller that the car was in perfect working order and that it would easily pass a Roadworthy check.

Evidently on inspection and testing for its roadworthy certificate the car has failed a roadworthy....
Major issue being that the "ABS system does not engage when hard braking, the car just locks up and slides"

I have taken the car to a "German Auto Specialist" mechanics who obviously specialise is German and European cars.

I explained the situation to the mechanic and he has since assessed the car and said that the ABS module has failed and needs to be replaced.

He reached out to Wreckers and Suppliers and apparently only one place got back to him within 24hours - they have quoted cost to get a new module unit for: $2,300 USD for a new module.....and he said that dosn't include the other part for the module which will obviously be additional cost - I dont know what the other part he was referring to is as I was stunned by the quoted price.

I have some part codes and some additional information provided by the mechanic:

"Abs control Mondale operation
implausible along with engine ecu
communication intermittent
Complete ABS Assembly - 1K0 614 517 BE
BEF
Control Unit - 1K0 907 375 AJ"

With my limited knowledge this does not mean much to me.
I have looked online and within a few minutes found that part
"1K0 614 517 BE
BEF" is very prone to failing and have been superseded, hence why they are rare to find and not easy to get that exact replacement part.

Now a couple of question, if there are compatible ABS replacement parts with a different model number that are less prone to failing - I wonder why the "german auto mechanic" didnt pick up on this and find a more common reliable replacement - why would he look for a replacement part that is well known to have failure issues? - not a big deal, just a little frustrating that I was given a high price for a part that is prone to failing.

Anyway, my main question please if anyone can help and provide reliable advice:
What other part number should I be looking for, for a more affordable and common replacement that would work in my vehicle?

I actually also own a 2006 golf mk5 GTI but was told by that same mechanic that the ABS unit in my golf is not compatible with my newer golf......number on the ABS unit in the 2006 golf is: 1K0 514 517 AA DE"

I really want to get this car up and running (everything seems great except for the ABS unit failing) it was supposed to be a quick easy replacement for my 2006 golf but it is already causing me stress trying to get this sorted.

If anyone could point me in the right direction or supply me with a recommended replacement part model number that would be fantastic. Really would appreciate any help given.

Please ask any questions I will do my best to answer with my limited knowledge.

Sorry for the long post....

Why do I think this is not a 2008?

1K0 907 375 AJ was installed from 06/10 - 06/11, and a 2008 GTI shouldn't have any MK60EC1.

I actually also own a 2006 golf mk5 GTI
Correct, that would me a plain MK60 and the modules are not compatible.
