So with the current update of VCDS I lost the ability to control the target voltage of my alternator's voltage regulator. Adaptation IDE01860-Generator specified voltage value variable. I originally saw this as a value of 14.4v and now it will not let me confirm the value. I am not sure if this belongs in repairs or vcds issues.

Thank you,
Matt

I lost the ability to control the target voltage of my alternator's voltage regulator.
Why would you want to mess with that ?

That voltage regulation is likely Engine ECU controlled and dynamic using parameters such as Temperature, Load, SOC and many more. You also risk playing havoc with Start Stop !!

So with the current update of VCDS I lost the ability to control the target voltage of my alternator's voltage regulator. Adaptation IDE01860-Generator specified voltage value variable.
Are you saying it's totally missing from the channel list in the Gateway, or...?

Dr. Sheldon - I am run LTO batteries. And verifying the charge voltage is important.

Uwe - The channel is showing. However the value changed from 14.4v original. To 10.6v. And will no longer accept changes.

I did some searching at it seems like the standard is 10.6v. But is there a way to tell the voltage regulator in the alternator the target value of 14.2v? I am now reading a maximum of 14.07v with my dmm (digital multimeter).

When I read with vcds I see voltage ranging from 13.6v and 111A of charge output.
Battery state of charge is 12v = 25% and 13.6v = 100%.

And I was getting better fuel economy. Before that field changed to 10.6v.

I'm wondering why I get an out of range error now?

Makes no difference to me what you are running, We should concentrate on how the thing was designed to work.

The correct voltage regulation is important to every electrical component in that car, not just the battery.

We know that some changes are not reversible !! Ouch !!

Probably a Lin signal from ECU to the Alternator

I think you're in uncharted territory. ;)

I am not sure what IDE01860 really does. These cars don't run the alternator at a fixed voltage. The voltage commanded by the gateway depends on battery SoC, engine load, temperature, and the type of battery your gateway thinks you have, plus perhaps some other factor I don't know about.

I don't think there's a setting for LTO batteries.

If I were to speculate I might guess that IDE01860 specifies the backup voltage the alternator will be commanded to produce if the Gateway loses the ability to monitor battery SOC from the sensor that's built into the battery's ground lead...?

If you think this is a problem with version 25.3 vs the previous 24.7, I can PM you a link to the previous version and you can try reverting, but based on what you've written, I rather doubt that's the case.

Uwe,

Looks like I am unable to edit with VCDS 21.3 and 24.7. Out of range error.

If this is the correct field how did I edit the alternator voltage? From 14.4v to 14.2v?

Sorry if I came off rude. Just trying to figure it out.

Have a good day,
Matt

I don't know. All I can tell you with any level of confidence is that I just looked at a recently generated map from a 2018 Tiiguan SEL Premium and found:

IDE01860-Generator specified voltage value variable 10.6 V

I'm confident that channel has never been messed with in this vehicle, so 10.6V appears to be the standard value for it. Moreover, this clearly isn't the voltage that the alternator tries to achieve when charging the battery.

So my primary question would be what does that channel do?

Alternator is in load sharing with the battery, sometimes. For regenerative function, alternator is being told to drop the output voltage, such that the battery gets discharged, e.g. at acceleration, then this voltage goes to 14.x at deceleration, and the battery charged back. Software target on my vehicle is 80% SoC.

Plausible theory, that this is the minimum voltage that the alternator should produce when battery SoC is determined to be adequate and the car wants to minimize "drag" from the alternator.

@Matt have you experimented with raising that value incrementally? Try 11.0. 11.5. 12.0 and so on to see what happens.

@Uwe So I have tried 14.4, 14.2, 10.6, 10.5, 10.7 for values all give me out of range as a result. What makes me thing that IDE01860 is the voltage set point is. 1. IDE01855 is the generator current measurement in the advanced measurements feature. I have searched for more common automotive terms such as alternator, battery voltage, etc. 2. With version 21.3 before I believe it was set to 14.4v (please note this was before my was supported).

I am hard pressed to believe a different version of VCDS would give you different results. And in fact, you said:

An "out of range" error is the module refusing to accept the change. This is not something that VCDS has control over.

@Uwe that's what I remember before the latest update. With the hex-net2 update. Which I do not know how to backdate.

I am wondering why my charge voltage went from 14.4v and I remember changing the target. With vcds when I was first testing the new lithium battery and made the coding changes to 14.2v target voltage for the alternator. As well as coding the battery technology type (lithium ion), battery serial number, battery ah (40ah in this case with a c rating of 100. Note that c rating doesn't come up as an optionfor vw).

So were is the alternator target value for voltage set? As that will tell the alternator how much to charge and what not.

Am I mis remembering making a voltage change in the ecu? Does changing the battery technology change the charge voltage?

I do not think you can set a charging target voltage per se. Again:

@Uwe I can post the unsupported scans from when I first got the vehicle. And based on my memory was able to change the voltage. But at this point I just want to understand what ide01860 is for and the ide01855 generator current. How they are related. Specifically what is ide vs mas vs bap. As each one of these has a different function.

You would have to call VW and ask their engineering department for the functional description of these IDEs.

A suggestion, instead of just memory, try looking at the adaptation log file that VCDS keeps C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Debug\AdpLog.csv - to see if you can find changes to IDE-01860?

Unfortunately, VW does not share design specs or source code for control modules with us, so I can't answer that.

@Uwe does vcds delete prior scans from prior versions (When a new version is released)?
