Hi folks,

Bit new to the VCDS world but have attached my recent log for 2013 Octavia VRS 2.0 diesel.

Few faults coming up causing check engine warning light that i need to remove to pass cars annual test.

Couple look ok, glow plug (P0671) will be replaced and that should be that.

The oxygen sensor (P2237) i need to order, which i hope may resolve that fault. i believe its the one pre cat near the bulkhead inside the engine bay? i have seen a few videos where they use VCDS to code the new one at install? i presume that is needed and should be followed.

i will worry about the fuel pressure regulation fault (P1065) afterwards.

Not sure what all the bulb faults are? Replaced both D3S bulbs fine the other week, not sure how it could be related, maybe coincidental and bad earth? Faults also for headlamp low beam that haven't cleared?

Last but not least, Rain and light sensor faults, cant code them out i understand, how to resole that??

Need to keep bright green VRS going, love her to bits.

Well bizarrely, got multimeter on all glow plugs whilst still installed expecting glow plug 1 to have failed with no continuity but readings all the same?? What else could the code be for? Should i exchange glow plug 1 with a new Bosch one regardless? Thanks for any advice.

Not that bizarre !!

4984 - Cylinder 1 Glow Plug Circuit (Q10) P0671 00 [10101111] - Electrical Fault
I dont see where it says it is the Glow Plug ! Or to replace it ! Also Ohms readings wont always work as heat changes resistance.



If i was you I would now measure voltage to Each Glow Plug whilst activating them - Be aware that they may be PWM controlled !


I use a power probe - Engine not running - and power each plug and note the Volt Drop to test them.

Should i exchange glow plug 1 with a new Bosch one regardless?
No but Swapping Plug 1 with 2 will give better Diagnostic Value.
The oxygen sensor (P2237) i need to order, which i hope may resolve that fault. i believe its the one pre cat near the bulkhead inside the engine bay?

Thanks for the reply. I understood it said circuit but thought that if the glow plug had failed and there was no continuity then the circuit would in fact be broken, hence why i was surprised to see that it appeared fine and intact.

How do you test voltage to each glow plug? Just com to earth and red to cap and switch on ignition? What is PWM?

Replace the rain/light sensor? Is that the thing under the rear view mirror?

Glow plug mystery solved. Took out glow plug 1 and 2 and put multi meter on them both, cylinder 2 fine but cylinder 1 with circuit error was near dead, still some continuity but not much. Hence the DTC code and circuit error, too much resistance in glow plug flagged P0671 circuit error. Put no. 2 in cylinder 1 and new Bosch in cylinder 2. Cleared codes and wee spin and now no code. Good stuff. Can't explain why i couldn't capture this with a multimeter when it was in the head but dead obvious when out.

Maybe the mild trauma of removing it killed it !!

I am wondering if there is an underlying concern that is still there ? I have come across a thing like this before, on a Passat and a Nissan Pathfinder ( Yes cars are all the same)

It could be that there was nothing wrong with your Glow Plug and your testing was correct however removing that plug killed it - It does happen, has happened to me before - Injectors and Glow plugs are a bastard for it.

Anyway - Good luck with the fix - if it does pop up again let us know !

Thanks for the input. Only thing i can think of is that when taking resistance reading whilst all glow plugs fitted (rubber caps off) i must have made contact with probes on the faulty glow plug, or indeed all of them. When removed had to lightly sand contact points to get readings off either so i wouldn't trust any of my in situ readings on that basis. I would say cyl 1 glow plug was always gone and new one resolved issue.....but if code comes back to cyl 1 more likely a wiring issue, unless that plug dies. Moral of story for me is remove glow plugs to test first before drawing any conclusions, just too tight in there for my sausage fingers and probes plus surface corrosion. No harm removing glow plugs anyway to clean thread etc and ensure don't get stuck in there....

Moral of story for me is remove glow plugs to test first before drawing any conclusions,
Have to disagree - The rule book says that your testing should be as Non Invasive as possible !!

Glow plugs can be tested in Situ !

No harm removing glow plugs anyway to clean thread etc and ensure don't get stuck in there....
Again no !! If you are removing an Injector or a Glow Plug (other sensitive components too) be prepared and be certain you have the money to replace them !! Risk of damage is there !! Just like Gaskets !

I would say cyl 1 glow plug was always gone and new one resolved issue.....
We do not know that - Diagnosis is an arena where being pedantic reaps rewards.
unless that plug dies
Eventually the rest will all die !! They have all done the same amount of work !

Again good luck - Hope it keeps going for you !
