VW Golf Mk7 Towbar electrics

Hi all,

I am fairly new to all this coding and I know there are lots of topics on towbar electrics, so I am sorry for yet another one but every case seems different and needs the individual code...hence why I'm here.
So I've installed an aftermarket wiring kit from ECS where I had the battery disconnected for well over a day, just in case that is a cause for some of the faults.
As for VCDS, I'm currently running version 23.11.0 (don't know if that will make any difference, but I've heard there are issues with the update) but I've entered [19-CAN Gateway], [Installation list], checked the [69-Trailer] box and clicked [write coding]. Now I am unsure what to change next and I have run an auto scan and cleared all DTC's which is the following:

However, I've just checked and some of the features that are meant to occur when towing such as disabling the rear sensors when reversing with a trailer, showing a trailer on the display and disabling the rear fog lights are not functioning...is there more coding to enable these features?

The instructions I had with the electrics had instructions for ODIS so I've also looked at them to try and make sense of it. (instructions in quoted section)

After connecting to ODIS, the “69 trailer function” controller has to be set to encoded in the target installation list.

Activated in 19-CAN gateway installation list

Other modules I have looked at after your previous comments include:

Finally the ABS, I can't access to review any of the byte's as the module states "Only limited coding information is available for this control module"

That's probably not what you want. I think there's more to getting that assistant than just checking the bit.

On my 22 plate Crafter I just followed the procedure in the instructions provided with the module from ECS, I do remember it mentioning ODIS rather than Ross Tech but all the module numbers and adaptation channel names were the same.

It was so hassle free that I don't really remember doing it now, that said, looking at my scan history I see that I made changes to 10,13,19 and added 69 to the list.

I know in my case it disables the park assist and rear sensors (and probably other things) when I have a trailer connected, our vehicles are different so you may need to make changes to more or less modules than I did but you get the idea why just adding 69 to the list won't cut it. I don't wish to seem unhelpful but all the info I needed was provided in the instructions.

Probably of no use to you, but below is what I had to do for my mk5 Caddy. I had no instructions for coding. Just read forums.
My big lesson was DONT tick everything that mentions trailer!

19-installation 69
69-Trailer changed byte 0 from 02 to 01 (country swap from US to rest of world). Also confirmed some pin settings for trailer power supply ( nothing needed to change)
01-Engine Byte5 ticked bit 4 Trailer recognition installed
03-ABS Did nothing. I know others have gone into adaptation and ticked something IDE04774 Vehicle trailer stabilisation. It wouldn't let me change it.
09-Central electrics I did nothing, but again I have read in other forums ENG122979-ENG141968 Networking Anhaenger Not installed to installed but security access denied me from doing that.
10-Park steet assist Byte 3 Bit 00 to 01 Trailer hitch manually removable
13-Auto dist reg Byte 1 bit 7.

This is where I lost days of my life; in 13 (the byte and bit numbers will be different for you I guess), I originally had byte 2 bit 2 ticked and not byte 1 bit 7. The former was TRAILER ASSISTANT. Later this would give me errors including the loss of ACC

@Uwe corrected me me and said add byte 1 bit 7. That got rid of the engine warning light, the above fault (which is an abbreviation of a German word), but I still didn’t have the functionality of ACC.

Additionally I still had the 0730 fault

@NEtech that pointed out to remove byte 2 but 2 as I didn't have AGA (another abbreviated German word for trailer assistant )

Problem solved. Don’t get carried away ticking like I did.

Hello RHG, From your unit scan, I understand it this way: After your installation of a non-original trailer installation that connects to the CAN BUS, the engine light is currently on in the cluster and the distance control is still malfunctioning. Plus text information about the unavailability of various assistants. I have been dealing with the installation of towbar devices for many years. Unfortunately, I have not yet encountered a case similar to yours that would make this installation work in the long term. If you want to put the trailer unit assembly into operation, contact the dealer from whom you bought it. This dealer should have his own device in which the SW for the function to be put into operation is continuously loaded. The aftermarket unit that you bought is illegal (although the dealer claims the opposite). Using the device for activation is the only way to your "success". Why the quotation marks? If you are lucky, the device will work correctly. It is possible that occasional assistant failures will continue. In any case, be prepared for the fact that when you visit a VW service (for example, to carry out some quality improvement measures), everything will return to the state you currently see on your car.

If someone wants a towing device and does not want to invest such a high amount for an original installation, there are other ways. But again with any compromise.

That's probably not what you want. I think there's more to getting that assistant than just checking the bit.

The vehicle manufacturer invests a lot of money in the development of such devices as a towbar unit and cars. The intention is understandable: Only VW decides on the retrofit. VCDS probably cannot go against this VW philosophy. So if you find out what needs to be changed in all units, VCDS will do it. But I'm sure you won't find out.

Let's clarify the terms. Original towbar unit = such a spare part that comes exclusively from VW AG. Everything else is NOT original (aftermarket)

I think it's up to the questioner to give a relevant answer about the origin of what is now connected to the Gateway.

But if this unit is really from the original VW AG production, I recommend online adaptation via ODIS. This will result in the correct setting of all units, but above all, the PR equipment will be recorded on a remote server. And in this case, there will never be a problem with SVM in the future. I believe that this recording can never be achieved through VCDS

Yes I agree with you, online SVM IF possible would be the best thing to do as it will then also record the PR code to factory database, and this way it keeps the coding if the car goes in to official maintenance work.

Thing is though that the OP has received the instructions what needs to be enabled or disabled to fix the only coding issue with ACC. Now I think we are just overly complicating the thread with something that is not relevant in this case.

I would like to hear from OP that is there still a problem or not? And if yes, what problems?
