Hello everyone

I am a VW enthusiast based out of Dubai. I own a 2009 VW Tiguan 4Motion 6Speed Auto (CAWB engine). It has done about 131,000kms/81000 miles.

I have been fanatical about maintenance. I follow a religious 5,000 mile oil change. I have changed everything well in advance of the norm .. including tensioners, water pump, fluids etc. I took it for a routine drive train fluid change - Haldex + both differentials + transmission including filter, gasket etc - all VW originals purchased directly from the dealer.

I stay three kms away from the garage where I got this done. I ran a auto test just for the heck of it and it suddenly threw the following.

Going by the Mileage counter this seems to have happened one kilometre into my drive after the fluid change. Strangely not very evident drivability issues till now - no shudder, over-revving engine etc. However I have been take it real easy - not wanting to put any more pressure on a suspect drivetrain.

The first thing I suspected was low/insufficient oil level.

I changed the Haldex and differential oils on the same day as well. In both cases I found the existing levels higher than stipulated. (at least 100-150 ml drained out from the fill hole - where as the level is supposed to be live with, or 3mm lower than the fill hole. Looked like it came overfilled from the factory or the dealership - the last fluid change was done at the authorised dealer.

Everything I read seemed to indicate the transmission will take anything between 3.5-4litres. In fact fact the dealer looked it up and gave me only 4 litres of ATF! I decided to play safe and measure how much came out. About 4250ml came out from the drain plug + pan. Upon removing the filter looked like another 100 odd ml flowed out. Hence I decide to play safe and fill all the four litres. In the end after wastage I must have put back about 3,900ml.

Today I took it to a specialist (a german garage that specialises in VW vehicles exclusively) just to get the level checked - and the level was okay. In fact the local specialist added around 500ml more stating that is what they normally do - which is what the dealership seems to have done too! I insisted they do a proper level check on a cold engine - and have left the vehicle there overnight. They will run the check first thing in the morning. The specialist clearly said they deal only with mechanical issues and they will not touch the gearbox.

Couldn't find a proper trouble shooting guide online . I measured block 6 (as advised by Peter on mail). MVB 006-3 The slip condition spec varies between 0/1/2. (0=Open / 1 = Closed/ 2= Slipped) and MVB 006-4 counter varies between -350 to +350. I don't know how to interpret this data to understand what is normal and what is abnormal.

I found a video online - http://www.ilexa.co.uk/vagmovies/auto_trans.htm. Unfortunately this is for a 1998 Seat 2.0 Toledo Petrol. Something like this may give some idea how to narrow down on what the issue is. Don't know if the same applies to my vehicle and GB (may be unlikely)... else something like that will definitely help.

I would like to know what to monitor to see/diagnose the component that has failed. (Torque converter or any of solenoids/pumps etc) Can someone point me in the right direction?

Much Obliged! :)

How will a scan of other modules help? (just for my understanding)

I was forced to run a scan from the "select control module" option because the auto scan kept failing at the engine module stage itself. It would list all the controllers, and start the individual interrogation .. and fail giving me an "unable to communicate - 99, use the options/test function" or something to that effect. The TEST function has no problem identifying the interface. I saved it and retried multiple times - all to no avail. I then tried accessing the same engine module individually from the "select control module" section - and strangely I didnt face any issue there! Hence I had to run this from the Auto Trans module - hence the truncated data.

Secondly, I saw that link earlier - but that is a vey wide swath. I am looking at help in narrowing down the fault. The transmission builders here charge the same bomb for touching the transmission regardless of the work involved... and give only 3 months warranty! Hence if its identified as a valve body fault, then I can order remanufactured upgraded valve bodies directly from companies like Sonnax - will be cheaper and comes with lifetime warranty!

Let me see ........NO

You are here for help, however, want to trivialize my request; by still not posting the data after you manually found you could, and didn't say anything about that before and wrote this babble?

Respectfully, was looking for conflicts/hardware issues based on control module configs.
Ones I might see from maybe things in my head .......you know this thing called life experience?

Secondly, I saw that link earlier - but that is a vey wide swath

Oh I get it .......you want a magic answer......?

Couldn't find a proper trouble shooting guide online .

Bullshit! It's in the repair manual.......I just read it....... time to RTFB.

Do what is asked here if you want help or go fly the magic carpet to your local dealership.

Oh and I do see something even in your incomplete post........I'm not saying until I see your papers.

Magic ..........from this " 10010010101 " to this " 11010100100 "

Going by the level of hostility and sarcasm, I evidently must have done some cardinal wrong. Please accept my unconditional apology for any/all oversights.. But have you considered ...

1. Every now and then, you may come across someone who is distressed enough to have missed the fine print the first time around?
2. I am in the Ross-tech Forum. I understand (and completely agree) with your angst against people with pirated software/third party interfaces. However, here the moderators have VERIFIED me as a genuine cable user - else I would not have been able to post on this section/thread. I was directed to this forum by Peter from Ross-Tech support.
3. Please re-read that sentence of mine - with emphasis on the underlined part How will a scan of other modules help? (just for my understanding). I further went on to explain the struggles I've had with Auto Scan and how and why I posted what I did. What in that sentence - or the rest of my post - made you feel I was trivialising anything?
4. The only thing I "edited" was the last few digits of my VIN pertaining to my serial number from that scan report - more out of force of habit. We live in a world where we are encouraged not to put personally identifiable data on public forums.
5. Not everyone has access to repair manuals for a variety of reasons. I don't. I struggled to move my Bentley subscription when I moved laptops.. and finally gave up!
6. The only reason I am here is because I realise the "life-experience" is invaluable. I value and respect that - and no where did I mean or allude otherwise.

I run vagcom software on a Macbook Pro thru Windows7 on Parallels. I have largely used it for small things till date like SRI reset, TBA adaptations, Basic auto scan etc. I have not had a problem till date. When I pulled the cable out to run the test this time, it told me there is an upgrade from 15.7.1 to 15.7.2. I have not been able to run the auto-scan since I did the upgrade.

I have downloaded that version again, and reinstalled it. I will attempt to run the auto test now. If that does not work I will borrow a windows machine and run it.

Till then, request everyone to please cut me some slack. I mean no disrespect to anyone - I am a newbie, and not everyone gets it right the first time.

EDIT: Still getting the communication error on Macbook - Here are the screen shots

Here is the Full Auto Scan Report from my kids windows laptop . Please bear in mind I had deleted the fault codes from the auto-trans control module (ONLY - nothing else) last night. There were no fault codes anywhere else other than a tank flap error (works though) and an erratic reverse camera (works more often than not).

The scan contains other information that is above your understanding and helps others sort your config to try to help you........ not just detection of pirates.

For example in addition things like this.

Address 01: Engine (CAW) Labels: 06J-906-026-CAW.clb
Part No SW: 06J 906 026 CG HW: 06J 906 026 D
Component: MED17.5 3978 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< I now can see that this has been through a couple updates.......

However!

Address 02: Auto Trans Labels: 09G-927-750.clb
Part No SW: 09G 927 750 FF HW: 09G 927 750 FF
Component: AQ 250 6F 1173 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< I can see that the trans is not up to date and belongs at SW 1700 or higher.

Since you have a trans issue, maybe it would be a good idea to get the update...........?

Now stop whining and go get it done.........In addition, take the VB off, & have it tanked + check the noids for load operation.
Consider an ATF that is slightly thicker, to deal with heat in your geographic region............this will help boost PSI of the ATF, and smooth out shift points.

Went to the Authorised Service Centre here and spoke to their Irish service manager. He mentioned how they faced a similar situation just last week where another Tiguan threw a TCC lock up error post ATF change. Apparently that went away when they did a transmission factory reset . He has asked me to bring the vehicle over on Thursday.

I have just joined a new job and mobility is critical. Hence decided not to wait till then and try this out myself from info gleaned from multiple threads/forums.

I first went into the engine module and did a TBA and Kick Down Adaptation. Then went into the Auto Trans module and did the kick down adaptation/retun to factory settings as detailed here http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/6-Speed_Automatic_Transmission_(09G)

Kick-Down Adjustment
Prerequisites:
No fault codes in the Auto Trans.
Throttle Body Alignment (TBA) performed successfully when applicable
Ignition on, engine off.
Do not touch the accelerator pedal.

[Select]
[02 - Auto Trans]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Set Group to "001"
[Go!]
Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
System in Grundeinstellung will be displayed
[Done, Go Back]

Wonder if there is anything more to be done? Is the OE approach/equipment more detailed/exhaustive?

I have not driven the car after that - will update effects if any.

Defaults and basic settings are typically a good idea with a transmission service ........however, an unrelated application in some mechs/DSG etc. it may be the end of the clutch's if you do.

Now this makes absolute sense. My mistake - apologies once again.

Would you be able to tell me if this is the latest? The last time this was updated was when my ECU blew and had to be replaced 25 months back. They must have flashed the then current version. They charged my the equivalent of US $ 2500 for this! (The dealerships these parts are absolute monopolies - so pretty much ask whatever they want!)

However!

Address 02: Auto Trans Labels: 09G-927-750.clb

Crap! Wish I'd known this an hour back!

Like most service centres, they need to be 'convinced' that there are updates that needs flashing. Given my problem guess that should be easy enough.

In addition, take the VB off, & have it tanked + check the noids for load operation.
Consider an ATF that is slightly thicker, to deal with heat in your geographic region............this will help boost PSI of the ATF, and smooth out shift points.

In the midst of all this I did fleetingly consider things like the the Lucas Transmission Fix that I read about online. Did not have the courage to go thru. Any advice on that (or any other product you may recommend?)

VB - unfortunately we have a predominantly replacement market here. Not much of diagnostic skills. I went to a transmission shop - apparently Sonnax distributors here - to enquire about the possibility of buying the upgraded valve body that Sonnax had on their website. (What was nice is the lifetime warranty.) They were more interested in pushing a transmission rebuild - without being specific as to what they will change/upgrade etc. Was not confidence inspiring. Dont know if they have machines to check flow etc. I don't want it to be a solenoid swap alone.

Worst case i don't mind importing a fully rebuilt unit from the US.

Well - SOLVED!

Guess the authorised service centre was right after all! An factory reset of the TCS seems to have solved the problem!

For the benefit of others who may face the same problem let me detail the steps here.

After multiple diagnosis's by everyone ranging from gearbox specialists thru to valve body specialists and VW specialist garages, what emerged was the error shrown was a Mechanical error - as such very limited options other than a rebuild (VB+GB). Unfortunately I was not getting anywhere with diagnosing the faulty part. Thats when I thought of going to the VW service centre in the hope that their diagnostic tools will be able to drill down and highlight the faulty part. Unfortunately they are a monopoly here in the UAE, and as such they are extremely busy and one needs to book a slot over a month in advance (no joke!). I decided to have a chat with the service manager, who said coincidentally they had faced the same issue with another Tiguan where this very same error came after a transmission oil change. Apparently it went away after a factory reset. He wanted me to bring the vehicle in a week from then - and in case some booking drops out then he'll look into it.

Unwilling to wait I decided to try the reset myself. I did multiple things ... but the combination that finally worked was this.. (Original VCDS mandatory)

1. Everything listed here is done with the KEY ON but ENGINE OFF.
2. First delete ALL codes - everything .. esp in the engine and Auto Trans. (delete everything to be on the safe side - you never know which module talks to which one)
3. Go tho the engine module , double check for codes, and then run the Throttle Body adaptation from the Basic Settings tab. (as per the process for your car)
4. Wait for 30 seconds before exiting the adaptation screen.
5. Switch off the key and remove key from ignition for five secs, then put it back in and turn it on (engine off)
6. Go to the kick down adaptation in Engine Module and run that from the Basic Settings tab (as per the process for your car)
7. Again wait 30 secs before exiting the module and cycle ignition.
8. Switch to Auto Trans Module and check for errors if any (delete if you find any)
9. Run the factory reset .. Please pull the applicable process for your car from the Ross tech wiki .. Please pick you make and car from http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page Mine was this http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/6-Speed_Automatic_Transmission_(09G)

[Select]
[02 - Auto Trans]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Set Group to "001"
[Go!]
Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
System in Grundeinstellung will be displayed
[Done, Go Back

However wait for 30 seconds to hit DONE and exit the module (as with the cases above)

PS: The 30 second wait before exiting adaptation, and the ignition cycling may seem excessive - but I have learnt from experience that this is the best way of doing it.

THE END.

I took the vehicle for a drive - and the fault promptly came back. I could see the TCC slipping (I was monitoring Measuring Block Group 006/7 in Auto Trans) . After about 40 odd kms, I sensed the transmission 'tightening' up and noticed the slipping had stopped. I then deleted the DTC - and drove for another 50 kms thru all the gears - progressively more aggressively - ended with giving it the stick in every gear! The fault has not come back till now. I will continue to monitor it and report.

(One trick of knowing if your TCC is locking properly is your "instant mileage reading" in your MFD will show "---" when you coast in higher gears (typically 4,5,6, - it can also happen in 2nd and 3rd gears depending on a bunch of factors ). If your TCC is slipping the MFD will never show ZERO - it will always have some number there - however improbable it may seem (upto even 70kmpl in my case)

I will anyway be taking my car into VW service this weekend to get the latest version of all software for my car. Will put up an autoscan once done.

Fanaticism starts with actually following procedure, and ultimately procuring + reading the repair manual.

Basic settings are clearly described in the publication.
If being serviced at a shop............this should have been done during the service, not 100 KM after with a DTC.

Further.......... a quality check road test would of shown this......... had it been preformed before releasing the vehicle back into your custody..........

The oil change was done in a local garage - they do not do European cars hence can't blame them. (This was pretty much a DIY effort - took their help only for labour and facilities)

Well - I already paid for the Bentley when I picked up the VCDS cable - lost it when my laptop fried itself. Picked up a Mac this time around. Never got around to installing it on that since that Bentley stuff runs only on XP (and they were clear they had no intentions of patching/upgrading it) - and I did not want a third virtual machine! (I already have Win7 running on parallels - need it for my work)

Found a site with free online manuals - wonder if that will do ? ..

Why don't these people permit us to buy an installable/online version I wonder - we bought the vehicle dint we! (Makes searching etc very easy). Its either a subscription model- followed by lockout. (useless - since it does not come in handy when you need it). Perhaps there are ways one can still print it out and then digitise the whole thing ... but what a waste of time and effort. There must be some reason why they have it so!

At least you own your faults ......that is the sign of an honorable person. :p

Old man .. Old school :)

Have done about 300 kms since the factory reset - absolutely no problem till now. One default benefit is the mileage seems to have really improved - by as much as 15-25%! (comparing the mileage from BEFORE the issue started). My MID is showing a solid 12.0-13.0kmpl trip average (earlier used to get around 9.5 at best!). DTE on a full tank went up from 550 to 700- 750kms! (combined cycle!)

I have managed a slot with the dealer tomorrow for running the updates. I intend to get updates for all the modules on the car. Does the old adage "Don't fix what is not broken" apply here? I have read in a few places that some of these updates should be done only if you have a problem (unless there is a recall/TSB to that effect from the manufacturer). Should I update only the TCM or should I go ahead and update everything possible?

What will you advice?

Okay - Got the update. Apparently only the auto trans had an update (ver1700) - the rest, according to the dealership, had none. They were pressed for time - so I don't know.

Here is the auto scan

First impressions -

1. Well... the code has not come back
2. After the dealers TCM adaptation run the instant mileage seems to have taken a hit - about 10-15% lesser than before.
3. Pick up seems to be slightly better in gears 1 and 2 - but the rest seem to be a tad slower. (Butt Dyno)

On the whole, early days yet.
