2008 Passat B6 (BPY) Windscreen Wiper Controller (wipers not working, no code)

Boring question perhaps, but will a fault code be generated if there is an issue with the wiper controller or motor (front, no rear). Had windscreen (shop manual terminology for windshield), and when rain finally came, wipers went up, dithered, and did not return. I turned them off and pushed them back down out of my view and didn't mess with it since I was due for a warranty windshield due to rear view mirror falling off. Haven't had the windshield replaced on warranty yet and bonded mirror myself with VW primer and adhesive since rear view fell off on two windshields in a row by this repair company. Requested factory glass, and not sure they will honor. Regardless, I have no fault codes related, nothing happens on output test for wiper motor if it is supposed to run the motor, and not active message received on wipers to return point output test. Again, boring maybe, but help appreciated. Wondering if there could still be a bad motor etc. And SB31 fuse is good. Sorry, didn't save autoscan in my rush this time.

And linkage rod appears to be in the "wipers down" position. But yea, I can't move that linkage now. Scan below. I mean, I rebuilt this engine and transmission with my own paws, and for some reason I just don't want to take the wiper motor/control unit out if I don't need to. Something always breaks it seems. Check the live data in central electrics module (09) to make sure the switch is working correctly

Do you have aftermarket bulbs in the car?

Thank you. I will check 09 live data. Not aftermarket bulbs, but new headlight assemblies that may have loose/intermittent connector. This is a new fault, and I haven't noticed an issue with the lights, but the light assemblies.... well, not OEM. Will need to check that out.

I have the wipers off for the time being, and correct that initially, the window shop may not have properly torqued wipers. Problem currently being that without wipers installed, motor isn't running. Motor position is at wipers down. Do you know if there is a "service" position for the motor below the "wipers down" position that puts it in a inoperable state? That is the case on some cars, but I didn't see anything about that in the workshop manual. I did try the

Can't get motor to go into "service/winter" position either. Included the APP just in case I end up needing to remove the motor, but hoping not. From the manual...

General description:
The wiper motor control unit - J400- and the windscreen wiper
motor - V- are combined to form one unit.
To remove the wiper blades, the wiper arms should be placed in
the “service/winter position”. The “service/winter position” is acti‐
vated within 10 seconds after ignition is switched off by pressing
windscreen wiper lever in “tip wipe” position ⇒ Operating manual
of vehicle .
Fault detection and fault display:
The wiper motor control unit - J400- is equipped with self-diag‐
nosis, which makes fault finding easier.
For fault finding, use the systems described in chapter “Vehicle
diagnosis, testing and information system” in “Guided Fault Find‐
ing” mode ⇒ page 409 .
1.1 Deactivating APP function of wiper mo‐
tor
The windscreen wiper system is equipped with an APP function
(alternating park position).
With the APP function, the wiper is moved up slightly once it has
reached the lowest position. This occurs every second time the
wiper system is switched off.
To fit the motor crank on the wiper motor, it is necessary for the
motor to be in the lowest park position. To ensure this position is
reached, the APP function must be deactivated.

I think you'd hear the wiper motor even if the linkage was loose at the motor spindle or the gear box had failed so it does look more like electrical

I'm not sure if you checked the live data to make sure the wiper switch is sending the right signals yet, but also check the bonnet switch as many cars have the wipers are disabled if the car thinks the bonnet is open to prevent the arms scraping along the edge (Also. that's important when you're testing so if you need to do tests with the bonnet open, click the bonnet catch/s shut with a screwdriver)

DON'T touch the linkage with the battery connected!

Oh and the headlamps. If they are HID or LED, it's worth disconnecting them to test as I'm pretty sure I saw mention that some can affect the central electrics controller

On some vw and audi vehicles wipers will not run if the hood is open. To test latch hood latch and check if it makes a difference. Service position is a thing but varies by model you can normally engage service position by either MMI or cluster depending on vehicle and model.

Thanks. I checked live data (09 various like wiper motor, bonnet, and ran output test and could hear motor trying), so I removed the linkage assembly and motor, popped the controller off, and found a busted output gear (plastic, cracked all the way through). So VCDS led me down the path to the end necessity which I was trying to avoid, but alas she is broken. And from the behavior I saw originally after windscreen replacement (wipers went up and just got stuck there dithering a bit) it was either cracked somehow during the windshield repair, or (I think unlikely) the planets aligned and it was compromised and broke on the first stroke after the repair and would have happened anyway. Regardless, I will ask the windscreen shop if they can offer any help with costs. I'll likely be at the local pull-a-part again this weekend. Thanks again to all.
