2016 Audi TTS (not RS, think like an S3), 109k Miles. Stage 2 Unitronic tune. IE High flow catted downpipe, IE V2 Intake.

I was driving home on the highway last night, going between 60 and 70MPH. RPM's were between 2-3k. Suddenly, the car shuddered a little bit. I felt a low frequency vibration, but it quickly went away. We immediately started looking for a gas station to stop at, and the shuddering happened again, and again, and again. Nothing violent, just a shudder. We pulled into a Sunoco, I popped the hood, and started investigating. As the car was idling, I heard a knock, just one, and the engine started idling really rough and died. After looking at the engine bay for a few minutes, I saw that the bolt holding the turbo inlet was loose. I was able to hand screw it off. I went to the mechanic shop at the Sunoco, borrowed some tools, and reseated the turbo inlet pipe and tightened the bolt. We started the car back up, and everything seemed fine for a few seconds, then it shuddered again, followed by a dreaded repeating knock/tick sound. Then the car shut off before I could turn it off. It sounds plasticky, and when I felt around the engine bay with my hand to see if I could locate where exactly it's coming from, I felt the tick in the PCV the most. There was no vibration felt when I put my hand on the head towards the back of the engine by the turbo, and I checked in as many spots as possible.

I had the car towed to my garage, and I plan on removing the PCV to see if there is any visible damage on the intake valves/springs, followed by removing the head to check for damage. Also planning on buying a borescope and looking at the pistons. Before I get too in over my head, I'm looking for some advice on how to go about this, as I've never dealt with an engine knock in the past.

The sound is fast, consistent, and increases in speed with the RPM's. The speed is like a snare drum roll, with two distinct sounds in the knock, like an "in" and "out." This is the best way I can describe it without turning my car on and risking more damage. Oil level is fine. Coolant level is fine. No leaks except for a tiny drip from the oil pan seal that releases a drop maybe two times a day. Spark plugs are just about due for a change, and we were planning on doing a timing service at the 110k service interval. When the car was on, I pulled the oil fill cap, and there was plenty of vacuum pulling it back in.

When asking my mechanic friend on facetime while the car was running, he mentioned it sounds like the intake valves over-extending, and not so much like valve to piston interference. My friend recommended that plan with the PCV and borescope.

Any advice where to start or pointers on diagnosing? Has anyone dealt with this before?

I plan on removing the PCV to see if there is any visible damage on the intake valves/springs,
Strange way to attack that ?

When the car was on, I pulled the oil fill cap, and there was plenty of vacuum pulling it back in.
Not a good sign - symptoms of a PCV failed

he mentioned it sounds like the intake valves over-extending
What !!??

My friend recommended that plan with the PCV and borescope.
Hold that thought for now.

I am new to all of this as I have recently been trying to diagnose my own vehicle and understand how everything works so this may be a dumb question for those of you on here that are experienced at this, but shouldn't he be looking at why he has no voltage to his bank 1 sensor 1 O2 lambda sensor which was the first fault that registered? Don't many of these sensors share a common 5v reference and common ground so if one has a break in a wire it can make all the sensors on that circuit have a problem? A problem that might not trigger a fault code but lower voltages to other sensors like potentiometers that will then trigger the wrong information to the ECU which could alter air/fuel ratios and cause the misfires?

Fair point but a 2016 VW product will trigger fault codes.

With an o2 sensor fault logged the ECU will no longer rely on that sensor for fuelling -In theory ! A lean condition would likely not occur or be caused by that. ECU will have a strategy for these scenarios

Terminology had me confused in this thread however a PCV failure, Vacuum at Dipstick or Oil filler cap will cause a lean condition and multiple misfires.

No because the root cause of the MIL is misfire on cyl#2. Also signal low for o2 does not mean he has no voltage there. It just means the ecm does not see a signal It would like to or should see and If you look at all the faults there is a few faults that set before that o2 fault by looking at the timestamp. It comes down to knowledge and experience with these cars and also knowing the common failures and ways to check for those failures among other troubleshooting steps and tests. No one here can say they know everything about these cars, we are all still always learning new tricks. Sure sometimes you run across someone with a really big head that talks a big game all high and mighty but has very little hands on experience with such vehicles. In those instances it's best to be humble and let them run their mouth. It's best to be humble than be wrong.
