I have unfortunately been chasing a multi-cylinder misfire issue for about a year now. It has been to shop several times without resolution.

I pulled the engine last year to give it a decent refresh, most notably timing chains and intake value cleaning as well as some performance upgrades.
Prior to doing any work I started getting a rough idle, and CEL for Cylinder 2 Camshaft Adjuster Solenoid B (which was replaced).

Fast forward, I replaced a bunch of old parts and added some upgrades like the APR Stage 3 DTR6054 Turbocharger & Tune.
After the shop installed the tune, seemed to run great for a few weeks. Then the rough idle came back and things just progressively worsened to now
very aggressive muti-cylinder misfires.
The misfires are only occurring during deceleration with partial throttle... Releasing the throttle fully immediately stop misfire.
Light & WOT acceleration almost never see a misfire.
Rough idle exists but almost never see a misfire either.

The car does not feel sluggish, plenty of power and will burn the tires.
In addition to misfire codes you'll see in the Auto-Scan, I'm also getting an Air-Fuel Ratio Imbalance code that hasn't re-trigger yet since the last clear.
The last time it was at the shop, they diagnosed a bad Oxygen Sensor before the cat and replaced it. Slight improvement to the rough idle but no change to the misfires.

Prior to getting VCDS some things I noticed with OBDeleven after an hour drive:
Fuel Low Pressure, actual value (11.003 bar never changes) while specified is like ~5 bar
(Fuel High Pressure seems to match its specified value)
Long-term fuel trim bank 1 at idle (0.42 mg/stroke)
Number of high pressure incursions (5)

----QUESTION FOR THE FORUM----
With VCDS Data Logging, what specific data points should I log during a run to help determine the misfire cause?
I'm hearing to keep good data resolution you shouldn't add more than 8 data points at a time, so I'm doing multiple runs with different data points.

Occasionally Multi-Cylinder Misfires during cruise with partial throttle but less aggressive
Zero Misfires on light & WOT acceleration

---Smoke Test for Leaks---
I have a smoke tester and have checked for leaks.
It does appear to have a leak somewhere as the flow gauge never drops below (~3 LPM)
With a good pen LED light or a red laser I have not found any smoke escaping.
Smoke injection through intake before turbo.
Secondary Air Injection blocked off.
Exhaust end blocked off.

Aggressive Multi-Cylinder Misfires on Deceleration with partial throttle
Really !! I am under the impression that fuel injection is paralysed on deceleration, hence a "misfire" cannot occur !!


Has this got a "Pop & Bang" Map ??

Rough idle exists but almost never see a misfire either.
That there is your starting point - The Rough Idle - Perhaps the variation in Con Rod Speeds and rate of acceleration is just not enough to throw you a P0300 or P030x and the o2 is happy that combustion has taken place "to a fashion"

Never mind all that - A rough idle needs to be put right first ??


I see OEM in your post - What do mean by that ? Where are these parts from ??

I'm also getting an Air-Fuel Ratio Imbalance code that hasn't re-trigger yet since the last clear.
Do you have that Scan Saved ?? I would like to see the FREEZE FRAME data associated with that DTC

More I think about that the more I think that is a reporting characteristic of that ECU.

First off, thank you both for looking into this!

Secondly, I can hardly believe this myself, but believe I just "unintentionally" resolved the issue. Kind of feel like an idiot now, but at the same time no shop figured it out either.
Resolution: New Tires...

All of my shocks have leaked out and need to be replaced. By the time I had the money to buy a full set of shocks, my tires were out of round and as you could imagine creating a fair deal of vibration... That is also the time the rough idle started.
Not seeing the two were connected, I focused on the rough idle, which lead to the engine refresh project.

The vibration has become too much to bare on the freeway, so I got some dirt cheap tires on Amazon and had those installed yesterday evening.

I setup VCDS to log the graph you requested (below) and drove around all day today trying to replicate the misfire event, which I prior to yesterday could replicate every attempt.

I believe the vibration from the tires were interfering with the knock sensors.
For comparison, here are the knock sensors before (with misfires):

I will start driving the GTI to work now and keep an eye on it. If the issue returns I'll come back to this post.

Headache indeed! Not random at all, more like a super human mutant was playing jokes on me as I drove by LOL.

I just got home from a 3 hour drive in the GTI. Uphill, downhill, flat land, WOT, decel with partial throttle and every other variation I could think of. Not a single misfire.
