Hi All.

Got in my Bentley yesterday and started it up and after about 5 minutes of idling it cut out and has not started since.

There are some weird behaviours going on:

  1. Get in turn on ignition and the "press brake pedal to start engine" warning comes on...i press the brake pedal and the warning does not go away. After a minute or so the warning goes away and the car will crank (with foot on brake) but not start.
  2. Get out...close door and the car will lock with the key...have a think for a moment then unlock again. Open door (slam door) and the car will lock and stay locked.
I have had a leak into the passenger footwell...carpet is wet - so i have pulled the carpet back and inspected the relays in there and there is no sign of corrosion or green crusties - not to say somehting else isnt wrong there though. I need to take the carpet out really to get it all dry and fix the issue that is causing the leak - blocked drain under the in engine fusebox probably (top place to put it - well done Bentley).

I have done 2 scans - one when i got in today and cleared all the codes to see what was left:

My thoughts are power supply issue to the ECMs - but i have checked the fuses (i think all of them) and the Relays (i think all of them) and the fuses i have checked have continuity and the relays work when tested out of the car.

Question is...is the lack of power to the ECMs due to an immobiliser issue or maybe something more simple or really obscure?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

Gaz

This is an Easy fix !!

ECU 2: When you as in this case have got 19 fault codes then just looking at them is overwhelming ?

IF I had this car would single out one DTC and forget the rest.

I would go for one of the Injectors - Easiest one to get at ! I can bet you it is missing the Permanent (IGN ON) Live !!

That will be most likely be a FUSE or a Relay (bear in mind you have a relay DTC)

Get on >>ERWIN<< For a WD - Locate the relay and test the "tits" off it !!

You got VW AUDI to blame for that !! (Phaeton and A8)
Yeah...TBH i am almost pleased it has happened because it has made me look under the carpet at the relays etc and discovered the leak without any corrosion in there yet - so i may have dodged a bullet if i can get it going again.

Looking at Wiring Diagram now to see if i can isolate the fuse/relay.

Thanks so far

blocked drain under the in engine fusebox probably

In that case are the Engine ECU's wet ??

Unplug the Connectors on both - Look Hard - I have seen the coolant pump fail and coolant travels up the loom into the ECU connectors.

This reminds me of a problem I had about a year ago with my S5, 2009. It would crank, but barely run.
I'm not saying my problem is yours, but they sure sound similar. You can use this information to perhaps do the diagnostics that I preformed.

My under hood engine components (sensors, HPFP's, solenoids) were all showing "open" when tested (with a small load). (DVOM with a Load pro).

I went to the main relay compartment under the hood and determined the engine "under hood components" control relay.

With the key ON the engine relay was Not closing/activating and the engine components were still testing "Open". I pulled the relay, determined the ground side, and manually grounded that relay with a jumper wire to the chassis (with the relay plugged back in). It closed and all the "under hood opens" were now energized and the car started fine.

In short, the ECU was not pulling this circuit to ground and the ECU was replaced and the problem was solved.

Involving 2 different cars in one thread will lead to confusion.

Let's concentrate on OP and his car for now

I'm not saying my problem is yours,
Exactly !! So why say anything - it really does have the potential to muddy the waters !!

Sorry - but i have a -perhaps daft - question:

On my scan for Engine i have 19 codes and on Engine II i have 19 more codes - does Engine and Engine 2 relate in any way to the Engine ECU numbers? - or are they the same faults in both?

Does that make sense?

I will be back later with the wiring diagrams and my observations so far (getting dark now though so it may be the end of the week before i can do any more).

Thanks all....really appreciate your help.

In that case are the Engine ECU's wet ??

Unplug the Connectors on both - Look Hard - I have seen the coolant pump fail and coolant travels up the loom into the ECU connectors.
One of the ECUs has a rusty screw on the bottom but not actually 'wet'. The plugs on both ECUs are clean, dry and the pins are dry, intact and not damaged.

Reason for 2 ECU's is purely that VAG have decided to not want a single ECU to run more than 6 Cylinders. So the 8,10 & 12 Cylinders get 2 ECU's that loosely speaking run one bank each. However they talk to each other and work as a team.

Note in your scan that

01: ECU I has codes for Injectors 1, 2, 3 & 4
11: ECU 2 has codes for Injectors 5, 6, 7 & 8

There are plenty of VAG 8-Cylinder engines that only have a single ECU. ;)

But available ECU hardware from Bosch only had enough hardware (inputs and output drivers) for 8 cylinders and it did no make sense to make a special ECU for the 10 and 12 cylinder engines given their very limited production numbers.

That said, there are even 8-cylinder engines that had dual ECUs. The RS4, 8-cylinder R8 (which revved to some very high RPM) and the V8 TDI all had dual ECUs. In those, I don't think it was a lack of i/o capabilities, but simply that the CPUs were not capable of keeping up with the workload involved in the high-revving gasoline V8s and the multiple injection events in the V8 TDI, so the load was split.

If the car stopped whilst running it is not the immo - if I remember correctly the relay box in the pass footwell is for the windows. However the box fwd of that is the keyless access system - you really don't want water in that as it does control a bunch of power relays. (inc the ignition)

I would first check the voltage on the battery fuses in the LS + RHS of the boot on top of the batteries.

Then I would look at this
01826 - Sensor for Steering Angle (G85); Supply Voltage Terminal 30 000 - -

As that is missing battery voltage and appears both before and after cranking, trace the power supply to there on the OE wiring diagrams available from here https://bentleymotors.erwin-store.com
If you don't get anywhere with that, as suggested follow power for the injectors as that will go via a relay and you can look at the control and supply side for that. The J271 Engine management supply relay would seem to be a suspect as it supplies a bunch of fuses for the injectors and other items on your scan.

Progress update...and the plan...

I have got wiring diagrams for what i hope are the relevant circuits - both starter and main battery diagrams from the batteries to the engine ECUs and the injectors, and KESSY system. Will take some time over the next couple of nights to understand these fully.

The plan on Friday is to remove the passenger carpet (and put seat back in so car is electrically complete thus preventing more potential rabbit holes).

Then i can inspect the KESSY module for damage/water ingress and clean as required to remove any corrosion etc. This must be a priority because the floor is wet and it is essential to get this dry asap - even if it is nothing to do with the fault.

Once this is done i can try again....if no beans then on to step 2

Check and test all of the fuses and relays in the relevant circuits as far as the ECUs and the Injectors. If all ok then potential ECU failure either KESSY or Engine maybe.

If so...try to determine which one.

As a matter of interest.....are the engine ECUs interchangeable on the same vehicle? (probably not but i thought i would ask) - and if it turns out to be an ECU problem - either KESSY or Engine (hope not) then do they have to be programmed to the car (VIN?) and if so...can VCDS do this?

Thanks everyone so far for all the fantastic help and advice you have given.

It is very very much appreciated.

Hi all,

After a week on the healing bench, the Bentley must have decided it was going to be nice to me and it started straight up on Friday with no issues at all. That's not to say there is nothing wrong...because....

I removed the passenger side seat and carpet (UK car) and the under carpet foam is soaking wet - so work to do there to get that dry and ensure no more leaks are going to cause any further issues.

The kessy module under there has condensation on it - it was not sat in a puddle of water because i think the carpet foam has absorbed it all and no one got in an out of the pasenger side when the carpet was in so no water was squeezed out of the foam.

I am going to take the kessy module apart and check for any corrosion, ensure it is bone dry then put it back in.

I have been charging the batteries this week but i think they are 'past their best' so may just buy 2 new ones - if nothing else to remove the battery condition as a variable for when the car is back together and i run it and clear codes and see what (if anything) is left.

More to come on this - thanks for the help so far and will keep you all up to date with any issues found and progress made.

NO ! Not Plug and Play anyway.

I'm almost sure they can be cloned but that perhaps is not as good as actually making a correct science based diagnosis.

The Hardware will quite likely be the same but the Software will be different.

Good move !! Saves struggling and clear access will help to avoid oversights !!

Leaving the seat out would be my choice - That will not cause any Engine related issues.

KESSY I am not sure but Engine ECU not with VCDS.

They possibly can be cloned. @EuroX or @Jetta 97 would have the solution for that.

If you are going to fix this with any efficiency then Attention to Detail will help you progress !!

17548 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor; B2 S2

28772 - No Communication with Engine Control Module (SAE ECM/PCM) - Only in this ECU

Take a look !! They are nearly all different faults. Also that gives you an idea what each ECU is controlling !!

Rule of thumb is that

ECU 1 looks after every component that is shared by Bank & 2. Then Every component that is unique to Bank One

ECU 2 does every thing that is unique to bank 2 not much else.

17955 - Boost Pressure Regulation Valve (N75) - Same in ECU 2

17955 - Boost Pressure Regulation Valve (N75) - Same in ECU 1

17697 - Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249) - Only in this ECU

This was a quick exercise (maybe the odd mistake in there)

Clearly they are NOT the same faults in both.

Surely you are of an age where you have your own colouring pencils ??

I swapped a used KESSY in for a customer, I tried to just swap eeprom first but there was an issue with the original or it does not have all the data so I started from scratch with a used KESSY following these instructions

The whole saga is here https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/40183/#post-344686

It certainly sounds like you have a damp KESSY issue and it is not powering on T15.

Some simple tests to do.

1. Ignition Coils 1,2,3,4,5,6 - Ignition on - What voltage you got at Pin 1 ? - Out of the six just check a few if access is difficult.
2. Injectors 1,2,3,4,5,6 - Ignition on - What voltage you got at Pin 1 ? - Out of the six just check a few if access is difficult.

Those relays need to be centre of attention here - They will give us diagnostic direction !!
That testing has to be done Ignition on with them connected NOT UnPlugged !!

3. Can you get access to the bottom of that fuse board with access to test wiring to relays ??

If not then get 8 Female Spade connectors that fit on the relays, & 8 Male connectors that will fit in the Relay Socket, Add some wiring and we now have good access for testing.
