So I recently (read: 2 years ago) swapped out my tail lights to LED and have been trying to do the same with my 3rd brake light. Problem is, if I replace all 10 of the little (074? 077?) bulbs with LEDs, I get a warning in the cluster that I have a light out. Have checked and verified that with brake depressed, all 10 LEDs light up just fine, but apparently the system thinks there should be more load on the circuit, and takes that as "you've got a bad bulb" - which means car won't pass safety inspection. I've skated by via replacing bulb #1 and #10 with incandescent, but the 3rd light looks weirdly orange at the ends where these bulbs are (and they are white, not amber) - any suggestions on how to fine-tune the circuit load reference so my beast doesn't whine about LEDs in place of incandescent?

Thanks

The traditional way is with a resistor in parallel to the lamp to add a bit more load.

Yup, but all the housing bits are brittle 12-year-old plastic, and I don't want to melt them (any more than necessary)

The resistor doesn't necessarily have to be mounted at the lamp.
