Hi all,

New to me 2017 Audi SQ7 has developed a fault yesterday....Engine emission control warning light illuminated and a slight misfire at med revs.

Scanned last night and got the results below. Anyone got any thoughts?.....i think it is either the SCR injector clogged up or faulty NOx sensor. My money is on the NOx sensor but thought i would ask you good people if you think it is more likely to be anything else?

Go into Address AC and locate the reductant pump (sometimes called reducing agent) pressure and see if it is -0.5Bar. We have done a LOT of these and usually it requires revised AdBlue tank 4M0 131 878 CQ (to replace the delivery unit), filer line 4M0 131 963 B, ECU 4M0 907 355 H and engine ECU software update XCHGACA015.

Hello all,

Done as Crasher suggested and the results are in:

With engine off, ignition on the Reductant measured pressure fluctuates between 0.100 and 0.122 bar rapidly.

With the engine on it is pretty steady at 4.977 bar.

Any further thoughts?

So...it is unlikely that the fault is requires new tank, ecu, filler etc?
I wonder if the standby pressure is less than 500 mbar and normal operating pressure is 5 Bar that this represents a normal operating condition?

If it is not the tank, filler etc what else might it be?.....bad NOx sensor?

Is there a way to test NOx sensors on VCDS?

What would that tell you? The code is for the CATALYST not the sensors.
Probably needs a good rip to do its job.... have you been short-tripping it lately?

Hi

No...the fault appeared after 250 miles of motorway driving at 70mph (ish) during another motorway drive of 250 miles at 70 mph (ish).

I am not sure why my running voltage is low. Didnt even notice it to be honest......mmmm...i am going to go and measure the voltage at the battery with the engine on. Although thinking about it Terminal 30 would be regulated to 12v wouldnt it?....you wouldn't have 13 or 14v directly from the alternator on the Terminal 30 would you?

Ultimately i am not going to be repairing this myself - the car is under warranty and is booked in next Thursday for diag and repair. However, when i searched the internet for this code there was little information about it and i thought i would start a thread here to garner opinion and a possible fix for others who may encounter this - and not have the luxury of a warranty repair on the horizon.

I did consider some low gear high revs driving for a while to try and help it out a bit but am concerned about causing more damage by doing so. I am quite wary of driving it anywhere apart from to the garage next week.

The code relates to Catalyst efficiency as you said and (please correct me if i am wrong) the way i understand the system works is that there are 2 NOx sensors one upstream of the Cat and one downstream. The ECU compares the NOx reading between these 2 sensors and decides how much SCR fluid to add based on these values - to reduce the NOx value in the downstream sensor to acceptable levels. So i think that there are essentially 4 things that can be causing the low efficiency:

1. The upstream NOx sensor is faulty and is telling the ECU that there is less NOx in the exhaust gas than there actually is. The ECU adds SCR fluid - but not enough and the downstream NOx sensor is reading higher than is calculated as a result and the system is flagged as being inefficient?
2. The downstrean NOx sensor is faulty and the SCR system is adding what it thinks is the correct amount of fluid based on the upstream reading but the downstream sensor reads the amount of NOx reduction incorrectly (more than the ecu calculates it should be) and it is flagged as ineffcient.
3. There is a fault in the delivery of the SCR fluid - The NOx sensors are fine and the SCR delivery is underperforming and therefore the NOX is not being reduced enough - hence inefficient.
4. Software or ECU problem....then who knows....out of my wheelhouse completely in the land of angry pixies and 1s and 0s.

I suppose it could be something as in depth as Crasher says above or as simple as a crystalised SCR injector and anything in between.

Who said AdBlue was a good idea!!?

Unscrew the Adblue injector, clear it. Do the same with a nest in SRC. Perform the injector test. Make sure the AdBlue tank is full. You must be sure that there is only AdBlue in the tank.
On Monday I had a Ford with the same mistake, the reason was Adblue mixed with Screen Wash

They must have literally added some blue!

I have only had the car 1 week so i am not 100% sure that it is ONLY AdBlue in the tank....but...i did top it off the other day with about 1 litre of fluid that was definately AdBlue.

If i were fixing this myself then that is 100% what i would do first - clean the adble injector and do the test. I had a similar issue with a BMW 730D i owned and the adblue injector in there looked like it had been filled with polyfilla - there was a cake of crytalised adblue over the face of the injector. Removing it cleared the code and all was well again.

As i say - week old purchase so the garage can fix it - i really dont want to interfere and jeopardize the warranty claim. Thanks for the good suggestion though - i hope someone else can have some benefit in the future - after all thats what forums are about isnt it...a record of peoples experiences and frustrations for the future to assist others.

Of course - any other suggestions are welcome for discussion - and when the garage have fixed it i will come back here and let you all know what they did and what (if anything) was replaced.

Yes, you would. "Terminal 30" is un-switched battery voltage. It will actually be just a tad lower than battery voltage due to resistance-induced voltage drops between the battery and wherever it's being measured, but that drop shouldn't be more than a fraction of a volt.

BTW...14.95v Alternator voltage at the battery with the engine running. I assume 11-12v out of Terminal 30 is usual then?
Where are you seeing 11-12V at the same time that you're showing 14.95V at the battery?

Hi all....Voltages:

Ignition on battery voltage at the battery terminals: 11.66V
Engine on battery voltage at the battery terminals: 14.95V

Also looked in VCDS for Terminal 30 Voltages in 09-Cent Elec and got between 11.88 and 12.04V on all Terminal 30 selections - Key On Engine Off.

With Engine ON:

09- Cent Elec between 14.6 and 14.77V

I looked in Battery Regulator and got 15.0V at Terminal 30.

So - i suppose the question is why does the fault log for the NOx fault above show a terminal 30 voltage of 11.68V? Is this the voltage recorded at the time the fault occurred? If it is not that then what is it?

Please do not dismiss potential available TPI/TSB’s for adblue problems on an SQ7, before you go reinvent the wheel. There where some issues in the first few years with adblue systems on these, with various possible symptoms and various possible solutions. @Crashers reply is very helpful but it’s also not really doable for anyone to include rhe full details of any potential TPI/TSB in their reply.

Yes, but at the same time, the RPM was 1491.50 /min, so there's really no excuse for such a low voltage.

With Engine ON:

09- Cent Elec between 14.6 and 14.77V
Please check Terminal 30 voltage in 01-Engine and AC -- Reductant Control, because one of them is the module that recorded the really low voltage when voltage should have been higher.

When the light came on i did notice the car seemed to misfire quite hevily for a second (might this be a symptom of the low voltage - or the cause of the fault?) and sometimes when i start the car the idle is really rough until a little throttle is applied and it smoothes out. I tried several times to recreate this just now and it was fine on every start - the plan being to try to log the voltages as the car is misbehaving, but to no avail. It did it this afternoon once when i had to move it out of the way of the wifes car.

Whilst i was in there just now i was looking through some more of the advanced measuring values just to have a look around and i noticed that both NOx Sensor 1 and NOx Sensor 2 both had a value of 0ppm. Is this normal? In my naive mind - surely they should be different - ie downstream being better than upstream?

I suspect your battery is a bit weak / past its prime, but that shouldn't cause any of this.

i noticed that both NOx Sensor 1 and NOx Sensor 2 both had a value of 0ppm. Is this normal?
Was the engine and exhaust warmed up at that point? I doubt those sensors work immediately after a cold start.

Then I would say 0 ppm is not normal. Looking at the data for your ECU, it's a bit strange. It appears to have two sets of values for the NOx sensors:

IDE03140 -- NOx sensor 1: NOx concentration (ppm)
IDE03141 -- NOx sensor 2: NOx concentration (ppm)

IDE05346 -- NOx Emission NOx-Sensor 2 (ppm)
IDE05347 -- NOx Emission NOx Sensor (ppm)


You might want to do some logging of these to see what's up with them. And this one might be interesting too:

Update from garage.

They have determined that it is a NOx sensor at fault (not sure which one pre or post Cat and will find out when i collect it).

Car not going to be ready until Friday-ish as they are waiting for the new sensor to be delivered (Bosch one apparently) which should be fine as i would imagine either Bosch or Continental make Audi OEM ones.

Will be back Friday with the verdict and let you all knwo if the car is improved.
