How can the ecm say no communication with the G28 sensor, then proceed to produce a live graph from the same sensor?
It's called an intermittent problem.

So it may be the connections are a bit tenuous or some chaffing going on in the harness somewhere.
I'll see what I can find, thanks.

Thinking that way, I should have started there, but to expose the wiring would be a lot of work also. The sensor itself was cracked at the hold down screw, so I'm glad I replaced it anyway

Reading is a thing....
Check the connector then... it's clearly reading since the FF data shows RPM, so I'd suspect a flaky connection that just vibrates enough to throw a fault under certain conditions.

Arlon, with the ign ON and engine off, clear the codes in the engine module. Make sure it says No Codes before you move on. If you have no codes, start the engine. Post back your findings

Ok
In the middle of rechecking the nearby wiring.
The frame/ motor ground strap was quite funky so I adressed that.i think today is just wire inspection/ cleaning, because I pretty much blew by it the first go round because I thought it was fully functional at the time, so I just want to totally eliminate that before I move on

Original Equipment Manufacturer
Listen.
I have gone thru 250k on an 08 sprinter I bought new
I wrenched everything myself. I know what a knockoff is.
I changed the intake manifolds for their stupid swirl valves along with the dpf and a crap ton of other foolishness.
On this tdi I've changed the dpf, both ears, assorted pressure sensors and other innocuous bologna.
I never use knock offs and never will.
Oem is using the same source the Manufacturer orders parts from

Calm your tits!
Get a wiring diagram.
Use check your wiring\connector.

Or.... caveman it.... start it, start live data (logging would be better), and start pulling\wiggling the harness\connector if you can get anywhere close to it... see if the signal drops.

I'm not going to stand here and tell you that G28 is bad... but something I've been preaching for years now, anything with an electrical connector on it, get it from the dealer. Verify the electrical paths (wiring, terminals, ect) for the G28 are to factory design, after that, you might want to revisit the G28 replacement, otherwise you are looking at playing ECM swapping games and that won't be fun.

The part is an OEM
Identical in every way. ID Parts has a 5star reputation they are about the same $ as a dealer, but better to work with.
Last summer I ordered a starter for an 05 vr6 from the dealer. I paid $625.00 up front, waited 2 weeks for it to come in, and it was not the right one.
I went to O'Reilly and a knock off was $150
00 and it fit.

Thanks everyone,
Going to need a little time to try these things

I'll be radio silent for a bit as I work through this. I'll get back when I've given up.
I'm wrenching in a 30° garage.
The space heater gives me headaches

Savagesoot
It's a plastic part and the Crack had a halo of rust on it.
At 13yrs, the plastic becomes brittle and cracks

Hey
Need advice...
I got the crankshaft sensor plug out, and even though the wires are intact I noticed there is fine bare cracks in the insulation right at the connector plug. The plug and wires are clean, but not immaculate. A new connector is not readily available. Does sanitizing the connector and adding a 1/8" of epoxy sound like the thing to do?
It may be that this condition is causing intermittent problems
