FYI since this is my first post here I'll say that I am not an auto tech but a longtime gearhead with most of my history involving carburetors, mechanical timing and injection. I have a very good understanding of closed-loop control systems and quite a bit of experience on the industrial side but less with OBD2 even less with VCDS. Learning... FWIW I have worked with Bosch CIS, L-Jet, K-Lambda, and a few more modern systems like MAP/MAF systems. Since my wife bought this A3(and named it Frau Blau) it is now incumbent upon me to learn the system so here I am.
I have been working this problem on and off since mid-November '24 due to various other priorities. It was around that time that the DPF icon appeared on the dash. We tried a couple of things, like running at high RPM for a half-hour freeway drive first without then with a DPF cleaning additive, to no apparent effect. As of right now all readiness bits are zeroed, so I believe the conditions for NOx regen have been achieved but I still have the icon and the DTC. More details follow, after I get to the JPPSG stuff:
1)
2) Car is stock AFAIK, I did pick around trying to enable all windows up/down via remote over a year ago but do not recall the specifics. Hope to circle back on that after the matter at hand.
3) Auto-Scan -- The last of a few scans I performed around the same time, performed one after the other with the car hot and idling. This is my most recent of all auto-scans. Two of these most recent scans I did following the instructions in this video to capture measuring values and adaptations in both pre-label file and hex mode so I can post any of that upon request.
4) No recent repairs, was last in shop for oil change back in April. There is apparently a leaky turbo seal on the inlet that is causing seepage around where the center housing meets the compressor housing, I doubt it is relevant but including in case I'm wrong -- it's the only actual problem I have observed with/around the engine.
5) No parts changes on powertrain since purchased ~26K miles ago
6) Recent low voltage/battery related issues shown in the scan due to my leaving things on while working inside one of the back doors on/around Dec 2. Since then charging system works and battery load tested good. Steering wheel/radio codes due to aftermarket radio install and reassignment of steering wheel controls some years back. These may be ignored AFAIK but as an aside would welcome help clearing the individual codes in a way that won't impact readiness.
Main issue at hand is DPF icon showing on dash, NOx/P1A58 code found in VCDS even after seeing readiness bits all zeroed. Unfortunately I did not capture this readiness state with VCDS first time around but having reset all DTCs and cleared all readiness bits again the DTC persists. On or about Nov. 23 I reset the DTC and it came right back with a new date in the freeze frame, that date being approx. 307 days prior to the current date. It did not register with me right away that it had changed, my mind read it as "a long time ago".
Many experiments later I realized that this was not the case, when the DTC is reset and reappears it shows this date stamp ~307 days in the past. However, I found that the instrument cluster clock was set to about 308 days in the past. So I set out to confirm that this caused the "way in the past" value. I tried running an auto-scan, then resetting the date via the cluster, then shut down the car/VCDS Hex and VCDS software down for 15 minutes, set it all up and ran another scan and the date is unchanged. My guess is it is stored as an absolute date, not a relative-to-today date. I am guessing that if I reset the DTC again with the clock set properly it should give a correct date, but I am reluctant to do so since I do not want to have to go through the long process of clearing readiness bits again. I want to consult with the experts here as to the best way forward from the current state. I suppose it is also possible that the ECU has its own clock that is just way off but it would be an odd coincidence that the cluster would be off by about the same amount.
FWIW, since trying to understand both VCDS and the system drive cycles we have driven and observed regen-like behavior, as in high temps up to ~750° between catalysts at times. All of the exhaust/catalyst temp readings seem sane, heating and cooling with load as expected, some up to ~450° some up to ~750°+ and I think I have seen over 800°. Apologies for the sparse data from early experiments, but IIRC we were getting very low soot readings. We were monitoring G100(Particle Filter Differential) and G108(oil ash volume ml) and we were seeing G100 numbers like 5mg at idle, up to 20mbar at high speed uphill where IIRC ~40 differential is problem territory, G108 is locked at 108. I now believe, after the fact, that the PA0158 is telling me it's NOT the DPF... but I wanted to share this info for whatever value it may have in confirming that.
For me the big question is, given where I am at based on the data given(and any further data which I am happy to provide if able) what line of investigation or what actions should I take to either:
* Perform a proper diagnosis of the DTC and DPF icon on the dash so I can perform a repair, thus clearing the DTC
* Clear the DTC properly in the event it is not an actual malfunction but a series of conditions I have not yet met.
This is the last readiness dump, performed after the last auto-scan that day(above):
