Fans Running on Cold Startup

Hello! I've got a 2015 Audi Q5 3.0 TDI CPNB. The cooling fans come on at startup with the engine cold. No DTC's. A/C is not turned on. I have confirmed by the VCDS that the fans are being commanded to come on by the ECM. After 20 minutes or so, the fans will start to cycle, as I would expect them to do with a hot engine. At cold startup, coolant temp, oil temp, coolant temp at radiator outlet, ambient temp and engine control temp are all showing values of more or less the ambient temperature.

Anyone know why this might be happening?

Is there a way to find out what the ECM is evaluating in order to control the coolant fans?

Better yet, is there a resource that we have access to that allows us to see what actions the ECM is programmed take based on the inputs that it is receiving?

Thank you for the idea/comment. It definitely makes sense that the fans would be running during this process.

I do not think it is due to a DPF regen. I can try to verify the next time I have the VCDS up, but there is nothing on the dash that shows that this is happening.

I had the fan signal pulled up on VCDS. At startup, here is what I got:

IDE00381,Coolant fan 2: activation 24.43 %

I have a dual fan/dual controller setup. These values fluctuated around a bit but stayed pretty close to 30% for about 20 minutes of driving. They then dropped down to:

IDE00381,Coolant fan 2: activation 10.00 %

I stopped the vehicle to check the fans, and they were stopped. With the vehicle off, these values are also at 10.00%.

That would be nice, wouldn't it? Unfortunately that sort of information is generally no readily available.
Yeah! It's got to be out there somewhere. Someone had to program the ECM. You would think that would be basic info that any mechanic would want to have when working on these vehicles.

there is nothing on the dash that shows that this is happening.
I drove tens of vehicles and none had a dash light to indicate dpf regen in progress. And there is a good reason for.

Hmm... It would be interesting to see how this correlates with a vehicle that doesn't have this problem. I found some old maps from a 2015 T'reg TDI. Cold engine (coolant temp 25C), engine not running:

Hmm....

Someone had to program the ECM.
Sure, and they were handed specifications for how it should work, but they had to sign non-disclosure agreements.

I'm going to suggest you make a complete measuring value map with the engine cold and not running (while the fans are running for no apparent reason) and post it here. Perhaps someone will be able to spot something in there that's untoward.

I drove tens of vehicles and none had a dash light to indicate dpf regen in progress. And there is a good reason for.

Hmm... It would be interesting to see how this correlates with a vehicle that doesn't have this problem. I found some old maps from a 2015 T'reg TDI. Cold engine (coolant temp 25C), engine not running:

Hmm....
Some models have a single fan control module and some have two. My vehicle has two (and also showed the two distinct values for 380 and 381). My guess is that the vehicle that produced that map has a single fan control module (and shows 10% for module 1, which I believe is the value for "OFF" and 0 for module two because it isn't there). Just a guess...

Sure, and they were handed specifications for how it should work, but they had to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Right! I don't know why I didn't think about that - Audi probably doesn't want anyone copying their "logic" - it makes total sense that they would want to keep this proprietary.


I'm going to suggest you make a complete measuring value map with the engine cold and not running (while the fans are running for no apparent reason) and post it here. Perhaps someone will be able to spot something in there that's untoward.
Great idea. Once the vehicle is cold, and I have a second to get it done, I will try to figure out how to get the complete measuring value map, and then will post it.

I ran the map.
I'm not seeing anything obvious that explains why your ECU is calling for the fans to run. I did notice this, which struck me as odd:

IDE06435,A/C compressor: refrigerant pressure,0, hPa

However, the map I posted above has exactly the same thing, so I'm confident that isn't it.

Can these fans be activated with VCDS to 43 and resp 36% and confirm this is how they are when you start the car? Just trying to make sense.. Some cars with bad modules turn the fan ON without being commanded.

The best that you will ever get is an identical "KNOWN GOOD" Vehicle. And then there are no guarantees !!


Ideally in an Audi Dealer the Tech would have access to Factory Technical Support who would have the best resource and the best chance of a solution however they will NEVER offer that to you.

That there is reserved for New Vehicles under Warranty, and then a Buy Back and send to Auction with Warranty Withdrawn calculation will be made.

Often we forget that the likes of Audi are first and foremost a business. Driven largely by Profit and Shareholders.

There are Selective Output Tests in the ECU for:

IDE00238-ENG167462 -- Fan 1 control circuit
IDE00239-ENG167462 -- Fan 2 control circuit


But I don't know whether a particular percentage can be specified for them.

Derek, what the computer needs/reads (inputs) and what it decides to with that info (outputs) is an internal Audi Engineering/Design information. There are hacks (call it tuning, delete xyz whatever) but these people basically reverse engineer the original programming (and change it).

I have looked back through the Ross-Tech Logs folder, searching for the HVAC blockmap that was created at the same time as the Engine blockmap that I posted above. When I did the full scan, 08 HVAC created a PLB file (the Engine blockmap created a CSV file). I can open the PLB file using Notepad, but the format is a little different than the CSV file. I just went back out there and ran 08 HVAC again, specifying to have a CSV file as the output. If you want me to post the original 08, let me know. Here is the 08 from tonight:

Thanks for all of the help and comments. I am thinking that if the coolant and engine temperatures are normal (I am not 100% certain that they are, but I do not see anything that looks out of line) then the A/C system is another good spot to be investigating. We know that the fans run when the A/C is on. I also read that the fans can be turned on if the pressure in the A/C refrigerant circuit is too high.

However, the map I posted above has exactly the same thing, so I'm confident that isn't it.

Good eye! Yeah, this is along the lines of what I would expect to cause the fans to come on: some type of issue with the refrigerant circuit. So cool that we had the data from the other vehicle that showed this value at 0 also, which like you said Uwe, implies that this is not the cause of the fans being commanded to come on.

Can these fans be activated with VCDS to 43 and resp 36% and confirm this is how they are when you start the car? Just trying to make sense.. Some cars with bad modules turn the fan ON without being commanded.

Ruling out the fan control modules and fans is a good idea. I initially was suspecting that the fan control modules or the fans themselves where the problem. However, after doing some testing I think they are OK: (i) we can see that when the 380 and 381 values are at 10% the fans are turned off (I believe that the "10%" value means "OFF" - I saw this in another post somewhere and it has been the case with my vehicle, and (ii) that when they are above 10% they are turned on. I am under the impression that the fans and the fan control modules are working as they should. I am not 100% sure, but it seems to me that the ECU is turning them on for some reason.

The best that you will ever get is an identical "KNOWN GOOD" Vehicle. And then there are no guarantees !!
Right! Like you said, if we could get the info on what the "logic" of the system is, it would be utter bliss... In this particular case, we would know every single input that impacts the fan signal and it would be easy to investigate.

Unfortunate I don’t know how to read that hvac blockmap. Last idea from my side, is auto-trans having cooling lines to front rad? If so, blockmap from 02 needed.

Might wanna investigate more that refrigerant pressure being at 0. I know that other cars whenever they have issues with coolant temp sensor (no reading) will turn the fans on the highest setting. A long shot, just an idea...
