Looking for help diagnosing ABS fault:

00493 - ESP-Sensor Unit (G419)
001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

I looked at mb 005 under 03-ABS and noticed fluctuating activity on G202 (with the engine NOT running)

E9IlMn8.jpg

Is it normal to see activity on that sensor even with the engine not running?

I also attempted a Basic Setting on G419 (as it is available in the drop down) however it comes up saying not available. I did enter the security code 40168 which was successful.

0nMQBxq.jpg

Is that Basic setting really not available, or is there some order of events I'm not following?

Is it normal to see activity on that sensor even with the engine not running?
I think so. That sensor is quite sensitive and could pick up very small motions. How much fluctuation are you seeing? Put your laptop on the ground outside the car and remain outside the car yourself while looking at it.

Is that Basic setting really not available, or is there some order of events I'm not following?
It may be rejected due to the fault you have. Have you tried clearing faults in the ABS first?

FWIW, my guess is you need a new ESP sensor unit. They do fail.

The fluctuation is a very rapid oscillation between -0.2 and -0.6 deg/sec. It did appear steady however when monitoring from the ground outside the car, but still throws the fault code.

When I clear the fault it just comes back within seconds. If that is why Basic Setting 069 remains unavailable then I will move on to replacing the sensor.

I cannot tell you that with certainty, but it strikes me as likely.

That is a fault if the car is stable and not rocking
It did appear steady however when monitoring from the ground outside the car,

WTF does "appear" mean ?? Is it steady or not ?

Graph it with VCDS and post please.

I hear you. I hadn't taken the testing-time to be able to predict the exact results, I apologize and appreciate the help.

Just fyi, I edited my previous post - originally had values fluctuating from -0.2 to +0.6 but that was incorrect. Values are -0.2 to -0.6 (always < 0 )

There was no difference this time between being in the car or not.

Results:

Ignition on / engine off

Opened controller 03- ABS
Watched MB 005 - G202 fluctuates between -0.2 and -0.6 deg/sec for 1 minute ( I timed it) then holds at -0.14

Checked for fault - Fault is present
Cleared fault
Watched MB 005 - G202 steady at -0.14
Checked for fault - no fault present
Backed out 1 step ( controller still open) and checked fault again - still no fault present
Repeated previous step 5 times - no change
Watched MB 005 - G202 steady at -0.14
This condition holds (no fault, value at -0.14) for as long as I have the controller open
Entered security code - 40168
Attempted to access Basic Setting 069 - Not Available

Closed controller 03- ABS
Opened controller 03- ABS
Checked for fault - Fault is present ( closing and reopening the controller revives the fault)
Watched MB 005 - G202 now steady at 0.00
Closed controller 03- ABS
Opened controller 03- ABS
Cleared fault
Watched MB 005 - G202 still steady at 0.00
This condition holds (no fault, value at 0.00) for as long as I have the controller open
Entered security code - 40168
Attempted to access Basic Setting 069 - Not Available
Closed controller 03- ABS

If I turn the ignition off and repeat, the test results begin from the top and are identical.

Results are also the same if performed with the engine running.

With the engine running it takes 1 minute, coincidentally, from when I turn it over before the dashboard ESP warning light comes on.

I have also pulled the ABS and ESP related fuses hoping to reset the G202 sensor but I'm not convinced either of those kills the power to the ESP unit. With the ESP fuse pulled MB 005 still shows activity on the G202 channel, and with the ABS fuse pulled I cannot open the 03 - ABS controller so MB 005 can't be checked.

Do I understand this correctly; the G202 sensor is falsely detecting the car spinning around its vertical axis, albeit slowly, for 60 seconds and then hits a predefined maximum of data input [ hence the 001 Upper Limit Exceeded ] before sending the fault and illuminating the warning light?

A fluctuation is a fluctuation - The numbers are academic !

First 60 seconds after turning on the ignition. Scale -1 to +1:

Replacing the ESP Sensor fixed the issue. No fault codes and no dashboard light.
Thanks for the help and suggestions.

The measuring block graph still shows activity on G202 at rest, but does not flatline after 60 seconds like before. Also the Basic Setting 069 is still not available so I'm thinking that must be normal for this car.

I'm content since everything is working, but if anyone feels like running this log on a known good car of around the same age I am curious if the G202 behaves the same.

On second thought, now that the sensor is not causing fault codes, are there any other reasons the Basic Setting 069 would be blocked?

Are you doing this with Key On, Engine OFF? The latter is essential.

It must also be done with the car on a flat surface and the car must not be moved, rocked, or otherwise disturbed.

Yes to all of the above, including with the laptop on the ground next to the car. It is accepting the security code and I am going directly to Basic Setting 069. I had noticed when going to Basic Settings that are not blocked the security code allows access to only 1 at a time, so I made sure I wasn't violating that restriction.
