I have heard the following statement:

"Unlike TDIs, most Gasoline engine controllers after (roughly) model year 2005 will not allow modifications to the idle speed."

I have 2015 VW GTI SE Manual Transmission (MK7) with EA888 Gen 3 engine, engine code CNTA. It is a Gas engine, not TDI (diesel) engine. Does this means I can not change idle RPM by 50 per minute.

Is that statement true? Anyone has changed the idle RPM through engine module (01)->Adaptation on a recent model year Gas engine car? Thanks a lot.

Following is autoscan output:

Why do you want to increase the idle speed It will not resolve the fault you have.

Thanks for the reply. By the way, I am not referring to the fault, which is intake manifold position sensor, which I can replace it and relearn it with VCDS.

The bigger issue I have is sporadic message low oil pressure during hot idle. I am not handy enough to do DIY engine diagnose and repair, nor is cost effective for a 2015 year car, better would trade it in for a new VW or Audi:)

I was seeking confirmation about the following statement:

"Unlike TDIs, most Gasoline engine controllers after (roughly) model year 2005 will not allow modifications to the idle speed."

Is that statement true?

Thanks again.

It can be done via reflash of ecm, however I dont see this as a solution for low oil pressure. Why not check oil pressure switches for oil in connector? This is common occurence in these vehicles.

Thanks for the reply.

For the low oil pressure, I started with easy attempts:

I have replaced the brown oil pressure sensor hoping it was bad, but not. Replace oil filter updated housing and adapter, hoping old oil filter adapter was the cause, but not.

Then I proceeded to more complex attempts:

I installed an oil gauge to monitor oil pressure on my GTI MK7:

I have already replaced N428, which is oil pressure control valve:

No difference, same low oil pressure on hot idle, during hot idle, oil pressure below 0.8 Bar, the minimum.

I have replaced VW oil filter with K&P Engineering High Performance Stainless Steel Oil Filter from ECS,

This filter has many times the flow rate than stock paper filter, less restrictive, reusable after clean, 10x more expensive:)

I have changed the oil from VW 502 to Mobile 5W50, gets better, but oil pressure is still around 0.8 bar during hot idle. Could trigger low oil pressure warning. May consider double down to 10W60 since I am in San Francisco area, warmer California cliemate. The higher the viscosity, the higher the oil pressure in general.

Final DIY attempt I have not yet started:

Plan to replace the oil pump with more stiffer relieve spring, which will result in higher oil pressure.

Since the car is out of warranty, none of these is right fix, thay are bandaid if any attempt makes the low oil pressure warning going away by having oil pressure >= 0.8 bar during hot idle. Right fix is to trade it in and buy a new one, not replace engine at 5 figure $$$, parts and labor with no guarantee this problem will not happen:). It is a fun car though.

But I still like to have the following statement confirmed:

"Unlike TDIs, most Gasoline engine controllers after (roughly) model year 2005 will not allow modifications to the idle speed."

Is that statement true?

Thanks again

Yes and no. Your ECU does have an Adaptation Channel for it:

IDE00259-ENG104054 -- Idle RPM correction - Idle Speed Offset

However, I'm near certain you won't be able to change it. It probably requires a Security Access code that not generic like it is on older TDIs and isn't known (at least to me).

Thanks Uwe.

There is hope, Engine Module 01->Adaptation->Run in oil pressure to set it active.

Just in theory, if it works. Run in oil pressure is when the car is new, manufacture to set it in only high oil pressure mode, until 1000KM is reached. This means, ECU will tell oil pressure regualation valve N428 to be closed, until 1000KM is reached, so, during the 1000KM, N428 will lock only in high oil pressure mode even when RPM is below 2000 and engine temp >=80 degree celsus?

If this works, then set it every 1000KM iteratively in a forever loop, if the car lasts forever:)

It sounds like you avoiding the problem or low oil pressure. Does this vehicle has 2 oil pressure switches? Have you checked the check valve inside the filter housing to make sure thats not your issue? As it will affect oil pressure at idle whether hot or cold.

Thanks for the question.

"Have you checked the check valve inside the filter housing to make sure thats not your issue?"

Yes, I have replace oil filter adapter with updated housing and adapter, hoping old oil filter adapter was the cause, but not.

The oil pressure warning only shows when the car is in hot idle. No low pressure warning when the car is not hot, even at idle. This is confirmed by the oil pressure guage I installed, I had low oil pressure warning with the guage showed 0.6 bar in the past during hot idle, when oil is thinner, it flows quicker through engine parts and will not stick around, leaving engine parts less lubricated, the magic number for the oil pressure warning not to show up needs to be at least 0.8 bar, according to documentation (oil pressure range to be 0.8 bar to 4.0 bar when temp > 80 degree celcus)

There are 2 oil pressure switches (sensors), the blue one is for high oil pressure sensor, the brown one is for low oil pressure sensor. Both are in the down stream to the oil filter housing. I replaced the brown switch with genuine one from dealer parts dept, this is not the root cause. Having oil pressure < 0.8 bar when temp is > 80 degree and in idle is the sympton, which can only be correctly addressed by:

Drop the engine and replace the worn engine parts or replace the engine with a new or dealer rebuilt engine, this is a big ticket item/service which can only be performed by professional VW service, dealer or not:)

Relacing switches will not correct the problem in this car, in my humble opinion, I really wish it could.

We had an issue kinda like that on the 24V VR6 in our 2001 Eurovan about 10 years ago. It was due to FOD being lodged in the oild pressure relief (control?) valve at the pump, not letting the valve close the whole way. The FOD came from a defective intermediate sprocket in the timing chain section of the engine. We believe it was not properly heat-treated:

SdkLDOh.jpg

Amazingly, the low oil pressure at hot idle was the only thing that clued us in to the fact that there was a mechanical problem with the engine.

Have you dropped the oil pan on this engine yet?

Hi Uwe,
"Have you dropped the oil pan on this engine yet?"

Yes, I havd dropped oil pan to clean the oil pan, oil pickup tube:

I have replaced the oil pressure relieve valve (or regulation valve) N428 with genuine new one from dealer parts.

I have not replaced sprocket which is inside the timing control cover that is beyond my level of skillset:)

Thanks

I wasn't suggesting you should. I only mentioned it because that failure was the root cause of symptoms similar to yours, but of course in a completely different engine, and it was obvious that something mechanical had failed as soon as we dropped the pan and we found these bits laying in it:

I have sent the oil sample to Blackstone lab, result came back state more metal particles in the oil sample:

Screen+Shot+2025-01-14+at+9.34.37+AM.png

I have cleaned the oil sump, oil pickup tube and found some metal shavings.

I bought the car new, and currently is at about 75K miles. Always have oil change at dealer once a year when the car reminds me for the oil change. Guess I should have the car oil changed every 6 month or 5000 miles instead of every 1 year or at 10000 miles.

I have taken the following steps to mitigate excessive metal shaving:

Replace the plastic oil sump oil drain plug with a magnetic drain plug:

Replace VW502 (5w30 or 40) oil with Mobile 5W50.

Seen a little improvement when it comes to oil pressure at hot idle, to about 0.7 bar, need to be at least 0.8 bar according to VW doc. I may push to 10w60.

My theory is this engine is worn, for sure, space between engine blocks is wider than should be, oil when hot will be thin as water, thus oil pressure is low when hot. Thicker oil will become thinner, higher viscosity oil will be better than lower viscosity, when it comes to running at operating temp.

If I can not increase idle rpm, (just need a little push to make oil pressure to 0.8 bar from 0.7 bar during hot), I may decide to do the following:

1. Engine (01)->adaptation->set Run in oil pressure to active to see if that works, if not,
2. Replace the oil pump, or make oil pump relieve spring stiffer, such as inserting a metal washing inside the spring compartment, to make the spring harder to compress, which in theory can have higher oil pressure.
3. Or replace the factory oil pump with the oil pump custome designed for worn EA888 Gen 3 engine to have higher oil pressure:

Quite expensive and it is in Germany, need to ship to me in California if I decide to buy from them.

If none of these work, time to trade in the car and get a new VW.

Drop the oil pump out and inspect it closely, especially its inlet and outlet valves and bypass valve (if equipped). If nothing major is found, clean and re-install; otherwise, replace.

Oil pressure at idle should be at least 1bar. Checking both oil switches for failure is a smart decision.

while VW service doc says 0.85 bar at temp, I totally agree with you about needs to be at least 1 bar at idle. Since I have replaced the brown reduced oil pressure switch (F378), I will also replace the blue switch, which is below the brown switch.

Low oil pressure warning, to be exact is having error code P164D00, P164D is reduced oil pressure switch, the brown one, F378, 00 means malfunction, hence, P164D00 means reduced oil pressure switch malfunctioning".

Here is my understanding, correct me if I am wrong. When engine temp is >=80 degree C, RPM is at idle, ECU looks for the open/close status from F378, reduced oil pressure switch, the brown switch. The switch circuit should be open, as the lever is pushed by oil wich pressure needs to be 0.8 bar or greater; Any time when the oil pressure is below 0.8 bar, the lever closes, the circuit is closed, ECU receives the close signal, if the circuit is closed for a preset time period, like a few seconds (don't know how long), you will see on the dashboard P164D00 reduced oil pressure switch malfunctioning message, asking to turn off the engine.

Here is VW doc regarding disireable oil pressure range:

Low oil pressure will not show when pressure at 0.8 bar or better. The company in Germany selling modified oil pump for worn engine says oil pressure at temp needs to be at least 1.3 bar.

The problem I need to address is currently oil pressure at 0.7 bar when hot idle and with 5W50 oil. It needs to be constantly higher than 0.7 bar when in hot idle. This seeming simple problem is hard to crack unless serious professional works to be done on the engine blocks.
