My research is leading me to consider that, at least for this car, the ESP sensor and Yaw rate sensor are actually the same unit which is mounted to the floor directly under the climate control head unit. Can anyone confirm this?

The G419 is a single unit with 2 sensor in it, G200 and G202.... factory repair manual states:
Located under the center console beneath the ashtray

Speaking of factory repair manual, you should purchase access to that and download to PDF all the information tied to your VIN.

I believe it depends on the vehicle I have seen them mounted under the rear bench in some B6 vehicles.

Thanks, I should have specified it's a 2005.5 B7. I've seen articles saying that too, about being under the rear bench, and others saying it's under the ashtray, and others under the radio. I will dig for it.

ESP G419 Sensor location

Located directly under the climate control unit.

The sensor is not visible in the first image but the red arrow is indicating it is located forward of and below the climate control bracket.

The center console needs to be removed in the 2005.5 A4 B7. The yellow arrow is pointing to the ESP sensor location. It also helps to have the shift lever all the way back.

The wiring harness is a nuisance. I wedged the handle of a screwdriver in from the lower left side to lift it up a bit. There's not a lot of play.
It's difficult to see in the image because the screwdriver handle is black so it's shown here outlined it in yellow.

The cap nuts securing the sensor are 10 mm. I recommend using a long 10 mm flex-head ratcheting wrench for the least hassle, but a standard socket wrench will work with a lot of patience.

Also, the way the sensor sits, the wiring connector won't slide off (toward the shift lever) until you loosen the cap nuts and lift it a coupe of millimeters. The bracket it rests in gets in the way otherwise.

It is nice how the car is built around the G419... a theft protection design... one would practically have to steal the whole car to get one.

Once you do get more hands on and can test the wiring harness:
  • /2 (brown) is ground
  • /3 data to ABS /37
  • /4 data to ABS /24
  • /5 (black/brown) is power
Based past history from other customers, I suspect this will just be a bad G419, rarely come across wiring issues for no reason.

Hi,

(My first post to this forum )

Thank you so much for posting all this image and tips.
I've been watching your threads with great interest as I'm chasing the the same fault on my 2005 A4 B7

00493 - ESP-Sensor Unit (G419), 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded.

I've checked and monitored several things so far, my next step it to remove the interior, confirm the G419 part# and replace..... Looks like it will take a while :)

Yes, it is fairly involved, but doable.

I used the Bentley Manual as the primary guide, plus a few YouTube videos when I got stuck. The parking brake handle and its plastic trim were the most annoying pieces to remove. The handle has a clip on the underside that is best released with a pic tool, and the plastic trim holds itself in place, but both require a bit of brute force and prying to remove.

Also, if your car has a cigarette lighter under the armrest, that is not mentioned in the manual, and there is zero play on the wiring underneath so you definitely want to remove it before attempting to lift out the center console.
