My issue,

I got new fog lights and was getting an error on the gage cluster every time I started the car saying the fog lights were bad. After you turned them on and off the message disappeared. I saw on another forum that you can turn off "cold diagnostics" to stop the message. I of course busted out my obdEleven and changed the longcode in the central electrics to match what I saw on the post but the post was using VCDS and the number of bytes didn't match. I figured if it didn't work I could just change it back. No go. Now my door locks don't work at all (key fob, interior button, and when I use the key it mechanically operates but no power lock actuation). The car doesn't recognize the key is in the car and the only way to get the ignition to turn on is to hold the key to the start push button. The windows barely work (I gotta keep hitting the switch and I only get 1/4 inch movement every 5th time) the battery is flickering on the gage cluster and the car will try to start but is also in an intermittent status. (It turns over and stops repeatedly as long as I push the start button). Also, the gage cluster doesn't have a constant signal that the door is open (as evidenced by the gage cluster screen driver door flickering open and shut). This is also weird because the hood is indicating normally. Finally, I noticed the tail lights are flickering while ignition is on. This all happened because I changed the long code in central electrics and now when I fire up obdEleven it can see the module on the main screen and it shows green in the list of modules but as soon as I click on the central electrics module to go to the screen to change the longcode back it says "control unit not responding. Check ignition and try again". Can I revert the longcode back With VCDS?!

Things I've tried:

Unplug battery and short positive and negative battery leads for 10 min.

Attached a jump box to the battery (even though is says battery is 12.4V in obdEleven)

Cleared Cache in APP

Tried with a different phone

Copied the logs that say no errors with the central electrics module and even shows the longcode with the improper modification

Searched a bunch on forums and almost bought a VCP to reflash the central electrics. (Might have to go this route in the end)

Any help is seriously appreciated!

Also weird is obdeleven says no errors found.

Sorry. I'm super stressed about this whole ordeal. It would be way easier to read if i had better paragraph structure.

This forum is intended for vcds users. You should search assistance on forums of the other makers.

Alternatively, purchase legit vcds and help could be provided here.

Can I revert the longcode back With VCDS?!
I believe it could.

If you can find someone with a Legitimate VCDS (translation..... not a clone) , have them do a complete and unedited Auto-Scan ; then post it right here on your thread. I believe that is about your only option (on this forum). Other than purchasing a VCDS.

On a positive note, at least you have the original long code!

I of course busted out my obdEleven and changed the longcode in the central electrics to match what I saw on the post but the post was using VCDS
So you copied the entire coding string from another car?

and the number of bytes didn't match.
That should have been a clue to listen to: "Stop right there!"

Searched a bunch on forums and almost bought a VCP to reflash the central electrics.
Since you've messed up Byte 18 in a PQ35 BCM, I sure as heck don't want to promise you that VCDS can fix this, and VCP might be your best bet.

So, do you have the original long code to This vehicle? The code before you tried any steps.

Thanks for all your help! The code I got was from an eos forum. I only changed byte 18 as that was the byte they said to modify to turn off the cold diagnostics. (I didn't even change the number, I just checked the boxes). Had I known this was even a remote possibility I would have been way more careful. I think I'm going to get my car to VW. Thanks again and I won't be using OBDeleven anymore! I was hoping VCDS would be a cheaper alternative to the thousands I'm about to spend. :(

Before you go to the dealer, see if you can find someone with a Legitimate VCDS and see if they can enter that code for you. Or, take your chances and purchase a VCDS and the forum can attempt to guide you and correct the problem.

Unfortunately you learned the hard way, but it certainly could be worse. If the VCDS strategy does not work, you could always sell it ; that's if you no longer want to learn to use it for diagnostics. They have a very good resale value.

BTW, if its any consolation.... many established VCDS users found themselves in this very situation ; so, hang in there.

Eh? Long Coding Helper has had a "Don't mess with Byte 18" warning for PQ35 BCMs more-or-less forever.

Right, but that's not what I meant.

Many beginners or folks who are just not aware blindly walk into these situations with advice from forums. Many users here ,who later purchased VCDS, found themselves in similar situations as the OP. They started out with another scan / diagnostic device..... like him.

Unfortunately ,he wasn't using VCDS. (and couldn't read that very valuable message!)

Perhaps he will become a verified user and rename his user name to Byte-18 !

VCDS can easily fix byte 18 even if the byte 18 is coded 00!
VCP is the same regarding coding of byte 18 and bcm eeprom dump tool is a can off worms if you don't have previus dump saved!

Also, you can (safely) click around and read about your new VCDS system here:
(Also note the Manual Index half way down the page)

Watch as many of these (twice) as you can:
Especially the set-up / Intro videos

Also, note the blue tool bar at the very top of the page; click around up there as well.

You guys have been a million times more helpful than the OBDeleven site. Thank you all again! Let's hope I can get this sorted without too much more expense and I'm confident with VCDS in the future I won't be in this scenario!
