I'm in desperate need for help with this issue. I had no codes other than the sirius radio code which is caused by me not having a subscription, so disregard that one.
I started the car on a day when it was 15 F degrees and I got all the codes listed below in the log.
in addition to the codes the speedometer stopped working as well as the cruise control. The odometer does light up and display but it does not add miles as i drive.
Now a little history. About 2 years ago I put in a new clutch and when i did that I flushed the entire brake system and clutch hydraulics and replaced it with DOT 3. I remember reading somewhere about differant brake fluids and one kind was a little thinner and that would work best with ABS . If i remember correctly it was 4.1?? Im not sure. So My question is could DOT 3 cause ABS issues when its cold outside? I have never had any brake issues in the last 2 years of owning this car and the ABS worked last week before these MIL lights appeared, it happened to be snowing and the ABS worked fine.
Now I also have a red light on the dash saying BRAKE. I know that the front brakes had about 1/4 inch of pad left a month ago. Could brakes needing replacement trigger the ABS issues?
Now there is a 001281 vehicle speed sensor code also. I cant find a speed sensor. There are 4, one in each wheel for the ABS. But what drives the speedometer? a fifth one or one of the ABS speed sensors.
I find it very odd that all these codes happened at the same time. So where is the common point to look at first?

I forgot to mention that I also have a headlight range control light flashing on the dash. The car has adaptive HIDs. It appears that the left rear abs speed sensor also controls the adaptive headlights?

Does anyone know I'd my car uses a G22 vehicle speed sensor?

Your ABS module is completely MIA. Check relevant fuses.

Well I checked all relevant fuses and all were OK. But I couldn't find a designated fuse for the ABS module.
After hours of searching online, I've found several other people with the same issue and one pointed to a service bulletin speaking of cold solder joints failing right after an ABS activation. That makes sense since I did activate it a week ago.
So I've ordered a used one with the same part number and revision.
Do I need to code this new ABS module? If so how and is there a rosstech video?
Will my vcds hex v2 program( code) it ?
Thanks...

It would be a good idea to check the voltage at the ABS pump plug. Before replacing it.
Here you will find the schematics erWin. Buy for 1 hour and download all.
Yes. I will code the ABS pump.If you have done any auto scans before,
you will find them in the C:/Ross-Tech/VCDS/Scans.
The ABS pump coding will be there.

So My question is could DOT 3 cause ABS issues when its cold outside?
Use what Audi recommend - easy !!

Could brakes needing replacement trigger the ABS issues?
No !!

But what drives the speedometer?
You have no need to know this !! However all 4 wheel speed sensors are wired to ABS, Speedo gets the info from ABS Over the CAN Network.

It appears that the left rear abs speed sensor also controls the adaptive headlights?
No - not quite true.

You need to Fix This First !!

U0121 - 009 -

Worry about the Speed sensor fault after that.

I'd like Thank everyone for their input. A used replacement abs module has been ordered. I would have gone to the local junkyard to get one but yesterday it was 0F degrees here . Today it's 32F so I could have gone today buy one is already ordered and I know it's the correct part number and Revision vs me searching the junkyard aimlessly..
I also have a Bently manual, Haynes, and https://charm.li/.
Hopefully it'll be a little warmer when the part arrives because I hate working outside when it's 0F . But it needs to get fixed as it's my daily driver.
I'll report back if I have issues and with a status report when it's fixed.
Again thanks for the responses..

UPDATE: ok I got a used ABS control module and installed it today. I have the same errors as originally posted.
Whats my next step?
Many questions.
1- There is also a code for vehicle speed sensor. But for the life of me i cannot figure out which one it is?
2-address 08 What is HVAC ? Heating ventilation and air conditioning?
3-Code under 08 HVAC . If this is the heating and air conditioning, how could it be related to the ABS? Note: the heating and air seems to work fine.

UPDATE: ok I got a used ABS control module and installed it today. I have the same errors as originally posted.
Whats my next step?

What you should have done before guessing at the fix !!

Get a wiring Diagram and check the Powers and Grounds at the ABS Pump using a 21w Bulb, Volt Meter and Back Probe. Testing to be done with the ABS Module plug Connected

That's easier said than done. I have the wiring diagrams. My issue is the location of the connector at the abs module and the routing of the cable. I can't just pull the abs module out alittle to gain access because the brake lines are attached. Access is restricted. Note the car has a v6 3.2.
Why would the abs connector need to be connected to do this test?
Is there a relay used to power the abs module?

Every thing I do is Non Intrusive - It makes sense in my head - Just the way I was taught and it works for me !!

Ok you do the test with it unplugged - What we got ?

Also make sure have continuity on the CAN lines from ABS to Engine !

4- Could I possibly get a description of what the can bus is and where its located? I have never understood that...
Controller Area Network (CAN) bus is a communication system that allows modules to communicate with each other.

There are several variations however the one concerning you is the Powertrain Bus. It is the network that the Engine, ABS, Airbag, Instruments, Immobiliser are on (amongst others)

It is a 2 wire system and those wires are always twisted together (to manage interference) If one wire is down the whole lot is down !! It will not work on one wire alone !!

If your car has a Gateway - Then that is a gateway where all the different CAN Networks meet and exchange information (Loosely Speaking)

A B7 A4 does not have a Gateway. Powertrain CAN is brought directly to pins 6 and 14 of the OBD-II socket. So it ends up being a mixed bag. Some modules do diagnostic communications directly on the powertrain CAN while others are still on the K-Lines on pins 6 and 14.

I had my doubts !

Op for sure has a CAN issue as several Modules are not seeing ABS

A quick glance at the WD suggests that K Line only exists at DLC Pin 7 and Dash Panel - That is all i could see.

Nah, it goes to a number of other modules in a B7 A4. In fact, depending on how the car is equipped, it can have two K-lines, K1 on pin 7 and K2 on pin 15.

Bosch refer to Pin 7 as K Line and Pin 15 as L line - From what I can see both K & L are very similar (for diagnostic purposes) in all but name.

Yes, but the L-line is a very old and deprecated concept. It was used in the late 80s and early 90s as a dedicated, uni-directional "wake up" line for ECUs. Starting about 2001, Audi had so many control modules in some models that they were exceeding some electrical specification and moved some modules to a second K-Line on Pin 15. Since as you mentioned, they are very similar, doing this was backwards compatible with how the L-line was previously used.

Hello UWE And Dr Sheldon, After looking through many pages of the Bently manual, in the wiring diagrams there is K-line lo and K-line hi. Perhaps that's how it's designated?

Update, So as posted above, I installed the used abs module with the same results as the original abs module, aka, it doesn't show up under address 03 or anywhere in the vcds scan. But there are plenty of codes looking for it. So off to the Bently wire diagrams I go. As I'm searching through the maze of wiring diagrams, abs info, part locations(fuses, grounds, connectors, etc) I saw a warning paragraph. It said that if brake fluid was spilled on the abs connector to blow it off with an air compressor. Well it's pretty impossible to remove the 6 lines, 2 with the master cylinder on top of them, without spilling brake fluid. So I figured I'd blow out the connector. Now understand that this connector has a plastic cover to align the plns so that they don't get bent and due to that you can't see the connectors inside the plug due to the plastic blocking the view. So I blow it out and write powder comes out, a lot of it. Now I know the guy that had owned this car before I bought it and he was always taking it to the car wash and spraying it with the high pressure hose. He also washed the engine almost weekly. So I'm sure that's where the corrosion came from. So I sprayed the connector male and female with walmarts version of wd40, then air again, put it together and magically the vcds detected it. I deleted all codes except the new steering angle code and coded the replacement abs module with the correct code and then was able to use a link in ross-tech to I believe zero the steering angle error. That link had step by step directions. That code went away. I drove the car and all MILs are gone and the speedo, odometer, and cruise work now.
I do thank you and others for the assistance. I'm grateful..

Talk to you next week when the next check engine light comes on!!
Ahidley
