2015 Jetta TDI Manual Trans Rough Idle

Good day,

I have a 2015 Jetta TDI that has been gone with my daughter for a couple years. It seems to have a rough idle. There are no engine codes and the RPM is 850.

Since its been gone for a couple years, it may be something I don't remember. It shakes the car during idle.

Is this normal for a manual transmission? What should I be looking for in VCDS?

Mileage is 182,000. Timing belt and water pump changed at 120,000 mi.

You say timing was done at 120k miles and you're now at 182k miles. Where did you source your timing parts? "Implausible signal" usually means the engine has jumped timing and needs to be re-timed. Since timing parts should be good for ~75k miles and you've not reached that yet, I wonder about the part quality (or lack thereof)?

I think it is a cam position sensor. TBH, I’ve done timing belt/chain replacements in the past. These were on gas engines. I did have problems on this diesel because I failed to ensure the fuel pump was timed correctly. This was figured out and re-set. When the fuel pump was not timed correctly the “glow plug” indicator light was present. When I go to replace the cam position sensor I will inspect the belt again.

When I buy parts, I don’t mind spending the money for quality.

The timing belt was done before I had Vag-Com. Also it looks like
were limited numbers of CVCA engines released in the states. Please let me know if this is not correct.

The trigger for replacing the timing belt was a leaking water pump. This engine has the solenoid operated version.

Do I need to remove the camshaft gear to replace the cam position sensor?

Verify timing (all of it) before you load the parts cannon! You went on a tangent about the fuel pump timing, but that's not the error you're getting here, you're getting an error that the cam position doesn't make sense to the ECU as compared to other timing sensor data. Again, that usually means the timing has jumped a tooth, most likely on the cam gear. Your sensor is probably fine; if it wasn't, you'd get a different error about no communication or similar.

Got the car back from my daughter this weekend. Rotated the crankshaft to the timing mark on the cover as well as the notch in the main pulley. Inserted an approximate 5.8 mm pin into the camshaft sprocket hole and into the pin on the cylinder head. Another pin was inserted into the fuel pump timing marks. This is a notch on the sprocket that aligns with a hole in the casting. All marks seem to be on. It doesn't seem possible to get the pins inserted unless the sprockets are in the correct place.

Any other thoughts about timing?

That fault may or may not cause the Engine to shake as you describe, plus the fact that is intermittent !!

Clear the fault and note how long it takes to come back please.

Is the belt tensioned and tight ? Weak Tensioner ? Any Bearing Noise ?

Yep.

Now that you've physically verified the timing belt & components, it's time to focus on the electrical. Continuity test all the wires going to/from each of the timing sensors. Load test the power and ground wires in each connector. Remove each sensor and inspect them for metallic debris, sludge, etc. Inspect the holes/fittings where the sensors are inserted and verify there is no debris blocking the sensor from reading the encoder wheel (or equivalent) on each component.

You'll probably want to grab a wiring diagram <--- clickable link if you don't already have one.

I'm still trying to locate the Cam Position Sensor. I would think this would be in the manuals. As far as I can see it is not on the drive end of the cam. The only wiring going behind this cover is for the solenoid on the water pump. I've seen other videos that show the sensor at this end near the timing belt and there's nothing. The end near the gearbox doesn't seem to have anything there either.
