I
have a 2010 1.9tdi that has started stalling during startup. It was quite intermittent but has become more common. Most of the time it starts well and fires up.

Other times it will try to fire and stall and after this it can be hard to start. I have scanned with vcds with no fault codes and checked the torsion value, crank and cam sensors all seem in spec when running.

I am at a loss as to what it could be so thought I’d ask the wisdom of this form.

I have recently changed the injector seals as I did previously have a long crank issue when left for a few days but that’s been fine for about a year now.

Could this be a sticking egr, or would u get a code?

Thanks
Aaron

HI All im still having this issue and havent got any closer to resolving it. I found a few videos online regarding hot start issues and a vcds coding fix such as this one below.

I thought it would be worth a try but when i tried to code it in channel 1 came back with an "error channel 01 not available "and wouldnt let me do it. Does anyone know a work aorund.

I see nothing "below".

My guess is what you found is applicable to older, distributor-pump engines, while you have a unit-injector "Pumpe-Düse" engine.

Did you do a Security Access first?

Right, you have a BLS engine. The engine in the video above is also a BLS, but in a Golf.

I cannot imagine why.

Is the software in your ECU stock or has it been "tuned" / re-mapped?

I've seen this before where air is getting into the fuel system via the tandem pump. Normally does it in the morning

Thanks for the reply, I’ll have a go at rebuilding the tandem pump but this only happens hot. I did have a very similar issue to what you describe a year or so ago but that was injector seals leaking causing hard cold start after the vehicle was left. My issue now is only on hot start and when left for a short period. Today I stripped my egr and cleaned it to make sure that wasn’t getting stuck open.

The heat has to be a big clue. My experience of your symptoms was always cold and the next morning. I never rebuilt the tandem pump to fix the issue, just replaced the gasket where I believe the air was getting in.

Hi all so frustratingly I still haven’t managed to get to the bottom of this one. I rebuilt the tandem pump with no change. One thing I did winder is if a rattly dual mass could cause stalling on hot start. It’s only the hot start videos I’ve seen are long cranking to start where as mine stalls then is hard to start after.

Have you checked the electric fuel pump, the one in the fuel tank. What is the pressure she does, is there any pressure?

I haven’t checked it but the car starts and runs fine from
Cold and has no issues once running. Can the pressure be checked with vcds or do I need to fit an in line gauge?

1.9 TDI on the PD, it is probably not possible to check the pressure.
During the warm start, the engine rotates slightly as if it was not compressed?

i have ordered a pressure tester so i’ll check the in tank pump and see how that goes. otherwise i have also swapped out the coolant temperature sensor with no luck.

the engine basically tries to crank but as it fires immediately stalls when hot. i have seen a few things saying it can be timing related on the newer engines but nothing on a pd so maybe that’s a good next port of call.

hi all, so i tested the fuel pressure today. the gauge went to 10psi when priming but dropped to 0 after. i.e didn’t hold pressure however when running it held a steady 6psi. im
not sure what i was expecting but i found something that said 9-15 when priming was normal. would this sound about right for a PD engine?

hi alll, just to update on this. it’s a bit of a lesson in the keep it simple stupid principle. the issue was the starter solenoid, sadly as the starter was only 18 months old i guess i wouldn’t believe the obvious. i’ve swapped out the starter and cleaned the connections again and it’s running fine.

thank you for all your help
