2019 RS3 Water Pump Issue?

Hi,

I was driving the other day in the highway when my car suddenly gave me the coolant pump failure alert. I immediately slowed down and checked readouts. No coolant appeared to be leaking and the engine didn’t seem hot. So I limped it home and monitored everything closely. Oil temp never went above 204F and coolant was sitting at 185F. I recently replaced the water pump 1,000 miles ago so I have doubts the water pump has failed again. Doing basic research, I’ve read the fault could be for a sensor as the car can’t directly monitor the pump. I also replaced my wastegate hose/sensor because that failed which made me think of that possibility.

The car doesn’t seem to be leaking coolant and yesterday I tested it out by letting it idle to temp and taking it for a short easy drive. It held temps and didn’t go above 200F for coolant.

As I’m not the best at diagnosis, does anyone have any recommendations on which readouts to monitor to help determine what the issue is or any other suggestions? Below is the code I got. Any help is appreciated! Also I apologize if the format seems off. Pasting data from a screenshot.

I have unfortunately cleared codes trying to see if I could get it to trip again. I’m assuming an auto scan would be useless without it right now? Otherwise I can probably provide one later tonight.

Just a "heads up" if you are using non oem or non genuine parts ; they can prematurely fail or not function at all. Sounds like the pump is working, but beware of other electrical (unknown origin) parts.

They only sell OEM for it, couldn't do aftermarket so got a HEPU and made sure to match SKU and part numbers.

It's highly unlikely, I'd have to flush it again to see if something happened. When I changed it last I did a flush and vacuum fill.

I'm not seeing anything in the data for that ECU that shows direct feedback from either of the coolant circulation pumps, or the heater support pump for that matter. So I am at a loss to explain how the ECU determines that there's a "Mechanical malfunction" with the pump.

If I were chasing this, I'd type 'pump' in the the search/filter box on the Advanced Measuring Values screen and check every box where the description references 'coolant'. There are a number of other pumps that are not relevant here. Then drive the car while logging the data. Perhaps you can spot some kind of discrepancy?

Tried that last night and everything appeared to be normal. But I was able to take it to the dealer for a free diagnosis somehow and from what we could tell it looks like it may be either the thermostat or a vacuum line for a sensor that comes off the top of the pump. Seems it is most likely the thermostat as the car can get hotter than usual in low speed traffic and the feed hose to the radiator wasn't that hot while the car was at operating temperature.

AFAIK ecm determines this by checking coolant temp in comparison between thermostat temp sensor and other coolant temp sensors in the system.

Look at the water pump. A vacuum was connected to the pump. Check the vacuum in the pump for leaks. Vacuum hose, and valve.
