Bought a junkyard radio from a 2016 Jetta for my 2016 Jetta. Get the message, Component Protection Active. I'm learning that only a VW dealer can remove this so I can expect to pay $150 to $200 for an hour of labor, or about 4 times what I paid for the the radio. Alternatively, I can return this radio and buy a new aftermarket one for under $100. Will I still have the same issue? Can I remove the canbus terminals from the connector to solve this? Doesn't the radio just need power, ground and speaker wires to work?

Such is life. The CP will still be active but the CAN removed, but the radio will no longer turn on/off with the rest of the vehicle. CP won't be an issue with an aftermarket radio.

Ok thanks. Not worth it to me for the $150 to $250 dealers have quoted when new aftermarket radios are under $100. I guess I'll just return this one.

You can still get the CP removed by someone privately who may not charge as much.

$140 to $150 from the two that have replied back.
