After reading your Wiki page (link here) on this topic, I thought it might be worth including an additional note about a couple of other possible causes for the Light/Rain sensor failure. These are not actually about (G397) sensor itself, but can cause issues for the sensor that would trigger a warning light in the DIS or DTC when running an Auto Scan. I can't speak for other Audi models, but for the Audi TT (8J) at least, we have had reports of problems associated with this issue.
First possible cause is the windshield. Some of our Forum members had non-OEM windshields installed which ended up causing problems for the sensor. Once the windshield was replaced with the factory one, the problem went away. I can tell you from my own experience, the OEM and installation by Audi was not that much more expensive (60-Euro more) than a local windshield shop. I went with Audi because I know and trust the guys at the one I use for other service issues.
The second possible cause is the gel pack. This is located between the sensor and windshield. If this fails, is damaged or is not replaced when the windshield is replaced, it can also cause problems for the sensor. Note, this is not a Mk2 TT mirror assembly, I'm just using this to illustrate the problem with failed gel packs.
