Vehicle particulars: has the yellow-wire pigtail in vehicle harness for lock motor, and lock motor has connector. Wheels from a Macan, and tires from Mercedes...cheaper than new tires at Costco. Peels my face off around corners. Authorities like the ICE INTERCEPTOR badge - no tickets. Golf Alltrack rear springs and GTI rear sway bar. Rubs when driven too hard.

Action: Plug in a Level 1 120VAC or Level 2 240VAC coupler into the vehicle inlet; car off.

EVSE Observation: lights blink, relays click on... EVSE's 'turn on power' to the coupler

Symptoms:
- Car LED behind inlet flap shows yellow
- lock pin engages
- Sometimes lock pin stays in locked position (usually after a vehicle 12V disconnect/reconnect)
- other times the lock pin will retract after about 1 second
- when lock pin does retract, a short time later (maybe 2-3 seconds), I can hear an activation of the lock pin motor to retract, when it is already retracted. This is a pulse of about 1/2s every 2-3 seconds for a while. I think it stops after a few minutes. When I was working in the wheel-well I got annoyed at the car trying to unlock its own darned lock motor and disconnected it. It's reconnected.

Investigations:
1 - lock pin movement: fine
2 - lock motor active/inactive circuit measurements (1k & 11k Ohm): fine
3 - continuity of inlet equipment ground to chassis: ~ DMM leads
4 - continuity of inlet L1/N & L2 to orange charger connector: ~ as DMM leads
5 - VCDS errors in C6 Batt charge: none (5QE 915 681 B)
6 - VCDS errors in BD High Volt charge controller - none
7 - Level 1 AC coupler attached, then VCDS Adv Meas Values:

Other notables:
- I have the security bit for the charger top cover, but I'm afraid to pull up on it. Since it's a heat sink, it's probably got things attached?
- Ross-Tech's Dana suggested I put a hair dryer on the inlet ... and I have seen the EU youtuber that showed an EU inlet gasket replacement with a claim that conductivity in the gasket is causing the problem. I concede I have to try. Soon.
- I could remove and replace the charger with the one on my wife's car - same 2016 SE but blue, and working on AC Level 1 and 2.
- I don't have enough charge to make it to the Tesla CCS station from home.
- Last time it was successfully charging was overnight on level 1 120VAC; we think it sprinkled that night. I swear, if it's a hair dryer that fixes this.... I will want to talk to the ME that designed the vehicle inlet, and the test engineer that validated it.

In the absence of a DTC, indeed yes you have little choice but to try whatever you can - hopefully without making it worse.

I would have 8 channels of a scope plotting every aspect of that till I found the culprit.
2 - lock motor active/inactive circuit measurements (1k & 11k Ohm): fine
3 - continuity of inlet equipment ground to chassis: ~ DMM leads
4 - continuity of inlet L1/N & L2 to orange charger connector: ~ as DMM leads
These tests and results are not reliable in real world !!

Dr Sheldon: inputs for EVSE communication from inlet to onboard charger in front seem identical to a working car - the non-working charger is not reporting acV or acHZ. You're saying probe for voltage with an oscilloscope to prove AC supply is there? The conductivity tests (3 & 4) I did of ac cable and equipment ground aren't enough?
* I want to open the 7.2kW charger, but don't know if peeling cover off will damage it. Surely the pcba is best to place isolated scope probes... Is the cover safe to remove? Can you point me to any teardown source to improve my confidence?

The lock motor (3), is flipping CAN bits for locked and unlocked matching the actual state of the lock pin movement. Are you saying my checking of the device resistances in both positions is not a good component test? By 'real world' do you mean ' when connected in-car and used by the car'? I suppose this is one device you would suggest scoping when in-car to further confirm CAN message reliability. Agree?

I could tow it, yes. Fixing it is more my focus on the weekend.

* Any J1772 examples of a hair dryer working out there for a non DTC issue,?
* Swapping my wife's working charger... Is it worth the risk, or recommend a used one at $1k instead?
* Other ideas?
* Other messages via my official VCDS to look into?

Thx - happy motoring

Micah

Oh. And any thoughts about the 'retracted pin' periodically being driven into retract? It's firmware behavior for sure. The locked and unlocked messages flip when the motor is driven into further retract direction. Maybe the stalled motor is messing with the BD device ground plane? Scope would show level shifts...

hours of a heater on the AC inlet and a warm to the touch plastic body; still no charging.

The number of lockings CAN message keeps incrementing while the BD device keeps trying to drive it backwards every two seconds or so after a failed coupling action, while already reporting 'unlocked'. I can see it request an unlock event, and the unlocked state changes just momentarily to locked when the motor is being driven into a stall.

I'm half-tempted to pull the unlock motor out and open it as I know these are not perfect devices.

I'm late to the e-golf party but I was of the impression that VW only sold the entire charging port. That appears to have changed based on this find:

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10155778-9999.pdf

I realize you don't have any DTCs but the fact that they are selling F498 separately (rather than with the entire charge port) in more recent times makes me suspect they fail. If you have the yellow repair wires already that may confirm this was already done at one point but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that it failed again.

This thread must date back to the days where the entire port was replaced (since he mentions it was a $2K repair) and I'm not a fan of the hacked repair .... but there are photos:

If this is a locking motor issue and you were looking for one last VCDS idea before taking it apart I see that Address BD: Hi Volt. Batt. Charg. (J966) has the experiential coding options enabled for "A":

plug_interlock_A - installed
Charge_flap_locking_A - installed

You could try the Selective Output tests related to Power outlet A to see if it will lock onto the level 1/2 charger but if the default is released it may just continue to toggle back off?

The other idea is to see what happens if you turn off the coding for Charge_flap_locking_A installed but at best that may only be a (potentially dangerous) way to get it to take charge once more and confirm the diagnosis. I would not want to leave the coding disabled as a long term fix.

In addition, there must be dealer level flash update TSB/TPIs for address 8C based on:

You have SWL 0722 which is the oldest level. I'll see if I can locate any of those TSBs.

I was only able to locate this one so far and it was already completed: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2016/RCMN-16V138-9787.pdf

Hi Dana, thanks for visiting. I found it. L1 fuse inside the charger was blown. I replaced it with a suitable alternate (to satisfy the Dr., time to trip charts and I2t are similar enough).

It works now. However I did experience odd behavior of yellow light blinking green sometimes as I had charge current limits enabled by dash controls.

Also, and maybe this is where you could help Dana, I believe the charger has lost its brains and has incorrect values or corrupted memory for internal current and line voltage/frequency sensors. I think the charger also believes it's an 11kW unit for EU 3-phase instead of 7.2 North America 2-phase. I would like to know if I'm on the trail of some magic value to send it to set it back to 7.2 and 'get smart' about the power it's converting...

Apparently nobody has opened a charger and I'm the only one with pictures and a repair process. Any ideas on how to go about packaging this repair up for the community?

Oh. And I still have SD card issues in my VCDS unit. I flashed it as directed. No dice. It keeps forgetting I already set up the find and keeps asking me to consume another one... Let's address that in PMS, please.

Micah

Wow. As soon as I started reading that I thought to myself I NEED pictures! Then, for a moment I thought I should get a spare e-golf ... but back to reality. The one I have sits way too much.

As far as the community is concerned the best place for that may be in an entirely new thread that we can link to from various places in the future. If you prefer to keep all of this in one thread as you make progress on the car we can help split (or duplicate) some of the individual posts and create a new thread later. Either way is fine and the final location may end up being this sub-forum: https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?forums/24/

If you already have all of your photos backing up to a host such as Google Photos (or similar) you could toss them into a shared album or post links to the single photos. This thread expands on that using imgur:

Next, in regards to the country configuration I think those settings are correct but please run, save and post a scan in the current condition so I can look it over. As of your last scan Address BD: Hi Volt. Batt. Charg. (J966) was set to these values using 4A4914040400:

Experiential coding chart:

Ross-Tech coding chart:

That's from an internal support tool we use so the VCDS results would be significantly different but that's the easiest way to get it all on one screen using temp links.

Edit, we can work with you via e-mail on the SD card.

I'm glad you bumped this back up because the SD card slipped my mind. I'll send you an email so we can confirm the address on-file is correct and get that sent out in a bubble mailer.

Got it; no VCDS error anymore. Thanks Dana.

Egolf still charging ok. But I'm scared to charge faster than 10A; I did try 13A and no issue, but being spooked about more work got the better of me so slow charge it is... CCS still works too.

Awesome! Time permitting that process would be highly appreciated but I'm glad this car is back up and charging.
