Hi all, I hope you can advise.

2011 DSG Golf with the following issues:

1. Lost gears 2, 4, 6 and reverse
2. Wrench/spanner service light
3. Intermittent, fault can be cleared but returns
4. Fault codes are P073B 008 Not selectable Gear 6 - 001851
5. Component: GSG DSG AG7

Scenario:

At random intervals the car would defect into this mode, where only one clutch is available, I lose the positive gears plus reverse, but can drive in 'manual' mode with some caution.

It always happened after or during a stop, never when driving at speed.

The engine light was never initially lit, only the wrench/spanner, turning the engine fully off and on again allowed the car to run normally, and with no warning lights.

After a period of two months the issue compounded and resulted in a permanent engine light and wrench light, only using the computer could reset it.

After clearing codes, and replacing the battery (it was original) the car ran very well for around 100km, then the intermittent issues returned.

Questions

Has anyone successfully resolved this issue? And if so, how?
Why did changing the very old battery fix the issue for a few days? Is current not being fully supplied to the clutch pack? If so how to check?

Many thanks in advance,
David.

A Genuine RT VCDS Auto-Scan is necessary ; if you are using another scan tool, perhaps that manufacturer has a forum to assist you.
There is no way to help you here without the VCDS Auto-Scan and all its information.

Thanks - I have made the image non-private now
It must be complete and unedited. Please see link below for the necessary Auto-Scan.

I tried the kit in question, it failed immediately. I got a gearbox specialists to have a go, after the fourth one failed he gave up and ended up buying the car! We only fit a genuine mech, fit and forget.

I've noticed a couple of things:

1. The engine fault light doesn't mean you can't select some gears, only if the service wrench symbol is flashing will the gears be affected.
2. Using the standard method to clear the service wrench, I can get the gears back temporarily.
3. After starting the engine, if I go straight into Drive, it is common for the service wrench to appear, and gears are impacted. However, if I go straight to Reverse briefly and move backwards slightly, I can then do into Drive and pull away normally.
4. After a day of using this technique, the engine light turns off.

I don't know what to make of this, and unsure how long it will work as a workaround - any thoughts?

You've been asked a couple of times to please post an Auto scan from your car. See this link for what to do.

Without a complete scan posted no one is going to be either willing or able to help you.

A mechanic did the scan for me and only sent me the photo - I don't have the full scan details, I'm only asking for some advice or suggestions from the community, and some folks have been helpful already.

Ask the mechanic to message or email to you the text file that VCDS automatically saves, then post that here.
