Is it possible to "adapt" driving mode selection to remember last selected mode?

Dificult to advise without knowing how your Golf R is equipped, so please post an Auto-Scan.
My MQB platform Octavia does remember driving mode, but VAG have made changes to anything emissions related post Dieselgate.

This forum is run by Ross-Tech to support users of VCDS, so you either need to get an Auto-Scan done using a legal copy of VCDS or ask for support on the forum of whatever software it is that you are using.

I am trying to get a yes/no answer here. If VCDS can help I am happy to get it or maybe I need to get ODIS. Also my car has SFD, so VCDS alone can't do anything yet.

I think you just answered your own question.
Also, if you had VCDS and were able to produce a Auto-Scan, we would be able to view and see which modules have SFD and advise you further from there.
