My 2014 Passat with the MK60EC1 ABS controller (1K0907379BK) is throwing two fault codes that I can't resolve:
  • 00003 - Control Module / 005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation
  • 01130 - ABS Operation / 008 - Implausible Signal
After lots of unsuccessful troubleshooting and attempts to calibrate basic settings, I think I'm at the point of having to rebuild or replace the module.
  • What is my best option?
  • Does anyone have any experience with ECU Maverick (MK60EC1 rebuild is $499) or another source that you would recommend or advise to stay away from?
  • Is it something I can do myself, or am I better off bringing it to a mechanic?
  • Do I need to replace any other components in addition to the controller?
  • Is it safe to drive with the ESP, ABS, and airbag lights on?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Regards,
Rob

The long, gory details...

I completely rebuilt the front suspension this past summer. The bushings in the control arms had finally worn out, and every time I pulled something apart, I found something new to replace. This is the list of everything I installed:
  • Remanufactured hydraulic rack and pinion
  • New lower control arms
  • New struts
  • New springs
  • New stabilizer bar
  • New stabilizer bar linkages
  • New ball joints on control arms
  • New outer tie rods
  • New pendulum mount and bushing
  • New bolts all around
The car was on jack stands for about 3 months, and the battery was completely dead and had to be replaced. I did not replace any brake or electrical components besides the dead battery. Prior to the rebuild, I did not have any warning lights in the instrument cluster. Now it’s showing the ESP, ABS, and airbag lights. (I can't do anything about the airbag until I take care of the ABS.)

I contacted Ross-Tech support, and Dana was very helpful even though I haven't been able to resolve this. I followed the written instructions on the wiki page and in the video. I was running VCDS and pressing the pedal exactly as they were demonstrated. I was never able to successfully complete the 025 step. It was a challenge to keep the readings within the spec range. It kept faulting out (code 004), usually after about 4-6 pedal presses. I was able to go through about 12-15 presses (maybe more) one time before it faulted out. Dana suggested replacing the brake fluid since it had been a long time since it had been done. This helped with keeping the readings in range, but I still got the same result.

These are the ABS faults:

I did not do scan prior to rebuilding the front end. The most recent auto-scan I have before then is from February 2021 when the car had 30,000 fewer miles on it. I don't remember why it has any of the faults it lists. I'm pretty sure I was using VCDS to code a new clockspring at the time:

I had a customer struggling to complete the basic settings for the 00003 code a while back and they had two metal brake pipes swapped over after a refit. When the pipes were put in the correct positions, the procedure went through easily.

If none of the brake parts on your car have been disconnected, I wonder if this issue could also be caused by sticking brake pads or weak flexi hoses

(be aware the 01130 code can only be cleared after the car has been driven a short distance)

Best regards
Derek

I was wondering if something like that could cause the problem or at least prevent me from fixing the settings. I didn't see anything that had obvious damage, and Firestone (ugh) didn't report anything after the brake inspection I got with the fluid replacement. However, I'll poke around again this weekend. I really hope it's something that simple. Thanks!
