Hi,

My friend has a 2009 Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI. She says the car was taken care of. Recently the car overheated on the highway after a long trip. It does not start anymore.

I did a full scan, which I am attaching below. I tried googling around for all the symptoms and they seem to be separate issues. I also checked fuse boxes on both sides and the one under the windshield - all the fuses are good. I vaguely remember that the friend said they replaced the battery about a month ago, so I have a suspicion about the battery not being connected well - I still need to check that.

In the meantime, I would appreciate your help to understand which of the issues I should be chasing first if I want the car to start.

Thank you.

Forgot to add: when the car tries to start, the engine just keeps cranking until the battery dies.

I would take a look at these two faults, if you haven't all ready:

Also, I think I read here on the forum (@Uwe's reply) that this model is known for water and or corrosion damage to the wiring harness along the interior rocker / sill panel areas.

Recently the car overheated on the highway after a long trip. It does not start anymore.
That combination of codes suggests that she cooked that !!

Forget all that computer diagnostics for now !!

Do a compression test ?

Will it run on sniff ?

To add - Most DTC 's in that scan are no longer present, they are all historic - Intermittent

Except for

Engine
000257 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
P0101 - 004 - Implausible Signal

Graph MAF G70 & RPM as you Crank it and post what you got

Hvac
01596 - Motor for Outside/Recirculated Air Flap (V154) This is for the HVAC module - Ignore for now

Trailer
00532 - Supply Voltage B+
011 - Open Circuit - MIL ON - This is for the trailer module - Ignore for now

Well given the fact it overheated I would start with a compression and leak down test first or perhaps a block tester kit.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will be at the car at the end of the week and I will test
1. Battery connection
2. Compression test

In the meantime, if anyone has other suggestions I am all ears

Well given the fact it overheated I would start with a compression and leak down test first or perhaps a block tester kit.

And if she noticed it overheated; does that mean it got hot enough for the gauge to show really hot? That means it got REALLY, REALLY hot, assuming it still had coolant in it. If it didn't have all it's coolant in, and showed hot, then it was probably just about glowing red.

Or worse... did it get soooo hot, it stopped by itself?

The gauge will only read properly when it's in coolant, and that coolant reflects the actual engine temp. AND the gauge won't do anything useful until the temp is up at 115 or 120+ anyway. It's no more use than those temp lights.
If the coolant got low, the guage often stays exactly in the middle, until the engine gets so hot it's pretty well melting... then the gauge thinks about moving, after the heat has transferred from the thermo-nuclear-hot bits, to the temp sensor :D

What does it SOUND like, when cranking. If it's lost enough compression to not start, they often SOUND like it, but many times people don't notice.

I will post MAF and RPM graph, and I will try to post a video of how it sounds when it is trying to start in a few days. I am currently away from the car.

I will also try to get an honest "what happened exactly" from her. 😆

If it over heated start with basic like compression test and leak down. No sense in going into anything else if its got no compression because heads are warped and or head gasket is cooked or rings got so hot they no longer have any spring in them to seal properly. I highly doubt a MAF will keep it from starting. If that were the case simple scan with MVB and or IDE channel for MAF would tell you if the MAF is NFG or not.

First day update:
1. Oil is there. It is black. Maybe a bit sludgy, but I am not sure.
2. The coolant overflow tank is empty. I tried squeezing the rest of the pipes to see if there is anything and I think they are empty as well. I filled some water in. If I get it started, i'll exchange it for real coolant afterwards.
3. Battery is gone (physically taken out. Long story). So I brought a battery I had in the garage which is only 550CCA. I also brought a 1000A starter, and connected jump cables to my own Touareg. The thought is it should have enough oompf (technically speaking :)) to turn the engine over for the compression test.

I tried starting the engine and now it isn't turning over at all. This could be caused by insufficient battery CCA but I think I compensated for that with the charger and jump cables.

In addition, any time I turn the key off and remove it, the car will emit a loud noise coming from the top right corner of the engine bay.

I would appreciate any wisdom and guidance on what to do next. So far it is looking more and more like my new parts and scrap car.

Try to turn the engine by hand. If it doesnt move then its party time.

Forgot to add: when the car tries to start, the engine just keeps cranking until the battery dies.
If it was not seized at that point after it broke down then it likely is not now. Engines don't lock up for fun !!

Looks like this new problem is man made
