Hi,

I had an engine swap done but there seems to be an issue with the wiring.

My van is a VW Caddy SDI and its now got a 2.0l TDI CBAB 140 from a 2009 Eos.

The engine will crank but won't start.

The glow plug light is flashing and here is the latest scan.

Initially I just want it to start to make sure its running right because I've completely rebuilt it (rehoned,reground crank,new bearings,rings,head gasket etc etc etc :-)_

Can anyone tell me whether the engine can start with the DTC's it currently has? Not sure if the readiness should be 0 0 0 0 0 as mine is 0 0 0 0 1 which shows the EGR as incomplete which I think is fine as it can't test it without vacuum with the engine started.

The other worrying error is the ECU one, I was told this error is fine and its just because its been modded to sort the mileage and immobilizer?

Ok so I've fixed those errors and it still wont start.

Noticed this in VCDS:

248.0 bar High Fuel Pressure (specified)
0.0 bar High Fuel Pressure (actual)

Also when I try running the basic settings for N276 fuel pressure regulator it errors and says not available.
If I physically unplug the sensor it throws an error code so the ecu see's its there.

Can you only run the basic settings once its running?

I've checked the fuel pipes on each of the injectors and they're all getting fuel. I'm confused why its saying theres no pressure as the high pressure pump is mechanical so while its cranking its building pressure.

When I'm cranking it doesnt even try to fire at all so it does seem like a fueling issue.

Any ideas on what to try next please?

Is this while cranking? It can't build rail pressure if the engine isn't turning at all.

Yea this is while cranking, I didn't expect it to match the specified value as it doesn't start but thought I'd see some feedback.

I've put some reconditioned injectors in and coded them correctly and it's also had new glow plugs.

What's the best way to see if the pump is creating enough pressure?

If the actual fuel pressure stays at 0 when cranking, it either isn't producing any pressure, or you have a duff pressure sensor.

I've come across a problem with the glow plugs.

The original caddy has a j52 glow plug relay which has one trigger wire from the ecu which powers 2 wires that each power 2 glow plugs.

The eos had a j179 glow plug relay which has 2 signal wires from the ecu and all 4 glow plugs have a separate live

I've connected the 2 signal wires from the ecu (j179) to the one signal wire on the caddy (j52) thinking that might work but it shows a DTC implausible signal but now recognises it as the j179 which it didn't before.

Can someone confirm whether it's possible to wire it somehow or do I need to get a j179?

Also can someone confirm if the glow plug relays are part of the fuse box and not a separate module?

What have you done about removing the immobiliser ?
I asked for it to be transferred but I think it's been set to Immo off.
Is that why I get the ecu error?
Its not affecting starting it because the orange key dash light isn't on?

I'm desperate to get it started somehow, should it still start with the glow plug error and glow plug light flashing?

The only thing I can think of doing next if it isn't wiring related is to remove the fuel pipe from the high pressure fuel pump attach a bottle to it, crank the engine and see if there is any pressure when cranking. If there is pressure I was going to remove and injector and stick a borescope down to see if theres fuel in the cylinder?

Unless anyone has any better ideas to try?

I think you are way out of your depth here - Your knowledge level is dangerously low !!

It seems you dont have the tooling either - but we can give it a go.
Can anyone tell me whether the engine can start with the DTC's it currently has?
000258 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
P0102 - 000 - Signal too Low - MIL ON
001552 - Engine Control Unit Incorrectly Coded
P0610 - 000 - - MIL ON

Those could stop it starting on the key !!
I've connected the 2 signal wires from the ecu (j179) to the one signal wire on the caddy (j52) thinking that might work but it shows a DTC implausible signal but now recognises it as the j179 which it didn't before.

Am I going mad here ?? WTF - Why are you not using the Wiring loom from the EOS - the correct one for that engine !!

That fuel pump can deliver in excess of 1000 bar !! 15,000 Psi - One squirt has the potential to cut your fingers off !!

Does your caddy have a Pump in the tank to feed the High Pressure Fuel Pump on the Engine

Yea this is while cranking, I didn't expect it to match the specified value as it doesn't start but thought I'd see some feedback.

I sent the car off for the wiring to be done but it hasn't actually been fully done so I'm left on my own doing this on the drive.
I'm not a mechanic but I've manged to fix the maf sensor, fuel pump, temp sensor and work out the possible glow plug issue so I'm doing well all things considered!!

The tank fuel pump works and sends fuel the the filter housing. The fuel pump 2 now works with the ecu which fills the high pressure pump and I get fuel at the injectors.


The fuel pressure bar reading doesn't change from zero though and as the pump is mechanically powered on crank I'm struggling to see how it can't produce any pressure?

There is more to that pump than being just Mechanically Powered - The ECU can regulate the IMV fitted in it, or the DRV on the rail can stop it building pressure - Equally you may have faulty components or wiring.

I dont get it - The original loom and ECU is plug and Play - You should not have any faults for

009300 - Particulate Filter; Differential Pressure Sensor
P2454 - 000 - Short to GND

000275 - Intake Air Temp. Sensor (G42)
P0113 - 000 - Signal too High
Freeze Frame:

009754 - Coolant Pump 2
P261A - 000 - Open circuit

000072 - Boost Pressure Control Valve/Solenoid (Bank 1)
P0048 - 000 - Short to Plus - MIL ON

000258 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
P0102 - 000 - Signal too Low - MIL ON

001668 - Glow Plug Control Module (J179)
P0684 - 000 - Implausible Signal

004374 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heating; B1 S1
P1116 - 000 - Open Circuit

I understand during the transplant that alterations will be made to the loom but all those dtc's should not be there.

The T60 ecu plug is plug and play but some of modules then have wiring to the T94 ecu plug which is part of the caddy body loom.

Either way it seems like a fuelling issue so could do with some advice on how to fault find on it if anyone has any ideas?

Also need to know if the glow plug module is part of the fuse box?
