Seat Alhambra - alternator current

Hi,

I'm wondering if I can view the current draw from the alternator?

My power steering seems heavy at low speeds, and I'm thinking it could be alternator (or even battery related).

It recently had some arms replaced, as the dealer thought this was the problem, but the steering is still heavy.

If your car has battery management and or Stop Start Module then may be in there

You could also Monitor Battery Voltage as it falters - However DTC's do exist for that ?

And we have absolutely NO clue what car you have !!

All we know is that it is an Alahambra that has an Alternator and Power Steering

It was more of a query if VCDS could view this data. But I thought a Seat Alhambra would have sufficed? Perhaps a year, 2016.

Would it have mattered if the vehicle was an audi or a seat? The functionality/limitations are within the software I assumed? Or, is vcdc and it's menu options are unique for each make and model of vehicle?

2016 probably has the BMS, so you probably have battery-related sensor values in 19 - CAN Gateway under Advance Measure Values. That said, a full auto-scan will tell us for sure.

Easiest way is with a scope and an Amp Clamp

@ABliss For posterity, please pay attention to the bolded bit. A DC clamp meter is the only way to measure this externally! If you try to put your multimeter leads in-line, you'll just pop the fuse. Most multimeters are rated for a max of 10A of current, your alternator puts out at least 100A of current - 10x as much, or more, than what a multimeter's leads are rated for!

Yep, you do have the BMS system, it's a virtual module that's part of your CAN Gateway. Check in 61 - Battery Regul. and see what you have in the advance measuring values. Search for the word "battery" in there, you should see things like voltage, health, charge level, and current which should be a positive number if charging or a negative number if discharging. That number is how many amps are flowing.
