I'm getting this code (it's a 2010 mk6 Golf GTD). I suspected the siren battery may be failing/failed based on others' experience. Removed and opened siren. No trace of any battery leakage or water ingress and the battery was reading over 6V.

I then tested by setting the alarm with the windows open and was able to trigger the siren by waving an arm inside.

Thought I should check for wiring damage, but not sure where the wiring runs once it disappears into the wing (tried looking in rain channel/under scuttle panel, but can't see).

Any ideas what may be going on or next steps to diagnose? Are any of the adv. measuring values of any use? I could see one for siren status (value "inactive") for example.

Autoscan below. Aware of air quality sensor (trying to get hold of a part at the moment). Line output/speaker monitoring errors due to aftermarket DSP/amps.

Mileage reported with alarm error is ~current mileage (I've cleared and the code comes back). I've also code the alarm as being "not installed" so that I could remove it and then coded it back to installed after refitting to test.

Thanks. Do you think the code indicates a failing siren then? It is functioning correctly.

Whenever I've seen it talked about, it's the battery that reaches end of life and then leaks on to the PCB destroying it. That hasn't happened here. Is it possible for the module to store an incorrect code state after an intermittent fault?

Don't want to throw on a new siren at that kind of money if cause is something else and solely due to a code, but would like to get the issue clean as I like to maintain the car to a high standard.

Is that a reasonable voltage for the battery? What's its nominal voltage?
Good question. The battery is marked as 6V (apparently these are 5 x 1.2V Varta cells) and it's reading 6.8V. As far as I can determine, a higher voltage on a fully charged battery is OK, but also does not really tell me if the battery is healthy because I'm not testing it under load. I think my options are:

1 Live with a code until the alarm displays symptoms (at least I know how to get it off now - drilling the rivets is the worst part of the job)
2 Try sticking on a new battery (£25-30)
3 Buy an alarm (£150-230)

Think I'll go with option 2 and then back to 1 if there's still a code. Unless anyone has any other brainwaves :-)

Also just found Measuring Block 126. This reports battery status as Defect, but voltage as OK. So possibly some additional weight to it being a failing battery. Will swap and see. Thanks Crasher and PetrolDave.

The genuine replacements sometimes don’t last two years so keep the invoice safe. We fitted one to a Golf 5 and it went faulty after 18 months. The procedure is to take the car to a VW dealer but they ignored the above code and insisted it was the ignition switch which is often stored as a code with the PQ35 platform. The lady paid for us to do the switch and still the siren would go off in the night but tellingly without flashing the indicators. We returned it to VW and they changed the siren which stopped the problem… for now. Personally I code the bloody things out, car alarms are a dammed nuisance unless you can hear it, a phone text makes more sense but there doesn’t appear to be an aftermarket system.

I agree, back in 2006 some scrote smashed the nearside passenger window of my A4 and even though the car was parked less than a foot from our hall window the alarm was so quiet it sounded like it was down the street and not on our drive!

I agree on alarm usefulness.

FWIW, swapped battery. No different. Everything works, no phantom alarms, but still a code. Must be a component on the alarm that is confusing the car.

I have absolutely the same situation. Alarm is working. Change the batterie. Still have an error 000 - no details

I changed the siren battery.

I have today tried a used 1K0951605C taken from a 2014 car. Fault cleared and measuring block 126 reporting siren battery status and voltage as both OK.

Also tested siren as actually working and (by accident when I forgot to code it out before removal) tested that the siren works off it’s backup battery. No idea how long it will last compared to a new one, but at least I know how to change battery and the siren if needed again.

That control unit will be looking at more than just Voltage at that siren battery - it may load it from time to time, it may be looking at internal resistance - I dont know !!
What I do know is that it does look at more than just Voltage - Also this is not a VAG thing - Loads of cars have the same siren issue. Volvo MB just to name a few !!

An example is the W212 E Class that has an Auxiliary 12v battery - That will show a fault in the Driver Display. I have tested a few of those batteries and they hold charge well however it measures internal resistance and fails the battery -

There is an MVB for that resistance in that module. so a change can be seen - I reckon the same is going on here.

Changing the battery, not the siren, it is a board fault.

Possibly, possibly not. I did however get the same error even with a new battery installed. It's possible I suppose that a freshly installed battery might not have been tested yet in the way that you suggest. Perhaps it needs to go through a charging cycle (I did not run the engine).

Or it's possible as Crasher says that this was a board fault. Either way it makes diagnosis and rectification other than by replacing the siren tricky.

Changing the battery, not the siren, it is a board fault.

Well, yes, I think you're right now. But no way to see that I'd suggest. Received wisdom is that the batteries do fail (and I have replaced one on another car successfully - in that case the sirens were no longer available). Measuring block also indicated a battery fault. Hopefully this thread will be useful to someone anyway.

It is in the service schedule to change the siren every five years.
