Hi guys,

I'm in the process of retrofitting/upgrading the A/C control panel on my vehicle. I've found a nice and clean match from an e-bay vendor in the UK. I just tested it on my car and it works as expected. The only issue is that the menu on the infotainment screen, as well as the control knobs are for a right-side driver configuration. I'm looking for the adaptation code to switch to a left-side driver configuration if available...

As always, your input on this matter is truly appreciated!

After installing the Climatronic control module I run a VCDS scan and found a quite large number of faults (15-just on the HVAC section). I'm assuming these are related to the new control panel retrofit.

Since I'm not looking forward to upgrade the whole HVAC unit/box, which is more of a major project, I'm wondering how concerned should I be about all these faults?...

The correct HVAC box is a prerequisite to Climatronic working correctly. You’re missing some flap motors and sensors. Would probably be better just to put the Climatic panel back until the correct box can be installed.

Never mind. I was able to switch the driver side configuration by using an OBDeleven. Since having a dual climate zone was not the main goal of this project, I won't bother with the hassle of installing the correct box and rather live with the faults as long as they don't have any effect on the vehicle's operation and drivability. So I will keep the Climatronic control panel, which is working just fine and it offers nicer features, not to mention the upscale appearance it adds to the dashboard...

At minimum you will need to install the "climatronic retrofit" kit which includes a couple of temp sensors, you can grab that on Ali... https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255801025784216.html
  • You can code out the fault for the air quality sensor. Some of the other faults you'll have to live with even after you add the temp sensors.
  • It will not impact the vehicle operation or drivability, technically, since it's just HVAC.

But as currently installed there is little (to no) chance your system is working fine, although I guess that's up to your definition of "fine" ultimately.
  • The climatronic panel adjusts temperature based on vent temp sensors, which you don't have (the Ali express kit will solve that).
    • This will be single zone of course, but that's no big deal.
  • Right now you have faults for the left temp flap which means no real control over temperature
    • Once you have the temp sensors installed this flap will be used to adjust your temperature.
    • The climatronic panel will control the "left" temp flap which is actually your only temp flap but again, single zone, so no big deal
  • Climatronic HVAC box has a separate motor to control the defrost vent flap.
    • Your car doesn't have that, so the climatronic panel is not able to direct air properly
    • Climatronic can do any combination of foot/face/defrost vents, while climatic an only do 2 of those at a time
    • Lots of people live with this air direction issue when doing the half retrofit.
    • What basically happens is the air will sometimes go where you want, but mostly the system will "hunt" for the right position, never finding it.
    • I could not live with that, mostly because max defrost became useless.
    • You can start at this post, and read through the thread to see how this can be solved.
  • Because of a different air intake box (above/forward of the glovebox) the fresh air/recirc function is not perfect
    • The door will close somewhere near 90% of the way though so most live with this.

Yes, after reading more in-depth postings about this kind of retrofit, I did order the harness kit from Ali-Express, which I hope it will help resolve some of the faults, at least those related to temp sensors.

Meanwhile, do you happen to know if the climatic/manual system have any temp sensors, at all?...

So far my partially done retrofit blows through all vents simultaneously, and by setting the air flow in the menu screen, is able to maintain a steady cabin temperature in auto/sync mode (72F) all through out the day, even when the outside temperature fluctuates from morning to evening, and no "hunting" issues detected...

Climatic does not have any sensors. It's possible your system isn't hunting because it doesn't know the position of any of the flaps so it's just not moving them. From what I remember you still end up with somewhere around eight faults after installing the sensors.

At minimum of fault for the Right Temp flap and its position sensor, a fault for the defrost motor and its position sensor, a fault for the other vent temp sensor, a fault for the air intake motor and position sensor (your car has an air intake door motor now but it's the wrong motor and it does not have a position sensor), possibly a fault for the motor that controls flap for air direction because the motor in a climatronic box is a different one.

As I mentioned you can code out the air quality sensor and it looks like your unit is not coded for the sunlight sensor as I don't see that fault in your scan. I don't remember being able to code that out but maybe so.
