Instrument Cluster Clone, Is it Possible?

Came to me with starting problems, diagnosed as a faulty instrument cluster with no communication, have sent it off for repair, they attempted repair but say its too far gone. If i were to get a second hand unit could I connect the unit direct to the VCDS cable could I clone the data off the damaged unit onto the replacement?

Part number for the cluster is 8j0920980E

No - That ends there

First if you cannot communicate with it then you cannot take the data you need from it to clone the replacement !

Secondly, even if you could then a diagnostic tool will not do that for you - VCDS is a Diagnostic tool. So no !!


Get a good Used one which can be coded in using ODIS - Quite a nice way out of this.

I note you are Oxford - I'm Windsor - Just a few miles up the M40 - Google "AirbagMan" - He may come to you and code the Replacement unit with Odis,


There are other more intrusive ways to get the data from that cluster by direct reading of EEprom and Microprocessor. The Mileage Correction Brigade use these techniques to manipulate what it is they manipulate.

Thats a pity, was hoping to save him some money, I've got another VW specialist near me with odis who says if intake the clusters to them they can do the coding but ill wait to see if anyone else on here can help before I goto them
