Hello Ross-Tech Experts!

1st post Newbie Here! I recently purchased a Ross-Tech VCDS for a diagnostic issue and now I've gotten greedy! I'm attempting to install a heated steering wheel in my 2018 Passat SE (autoscan provided in next post). I've scoured many forums and i've done about as much research/digging as I'm capable of. I'm hoping someone with more experience has some advice or potential solutions.

I purchased a heated wheel from a 2020 Tiguan that is nearly identical to my Passat wheel - with the exception of a couple different buttons. My plan is to swap the buttons and module from my Passat into the new heated wheel... and everything after that gets tricky. The B7 NMS platform never had an option for a heated steering wheel, so there is no clock spring available that I'm aware of. I've consulted the Ross-Tech "Steering Wheel Control Module Version" page that has a table of all the variations, and tried to cross-reference a clock spring configuration that might work - to no avail.

When I started this project, I resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't be able to fully integrate the heating function into the vehicle (no button, icon, or code option), so I purchased a 6 position knob and control module and plan to control it independent from the vehicle.

So, my question is: Is there a clock spring that I could possibly use or modify to work? When I say modify - I'm thinking along the lines of purchasing a clock spring that does have HSW connector and using the connector face and ribbon cable and retrofitting it into my original clock spring. Ultimately, all I'm really after is a reliable way to provide power to the heating element and I'll control everything outside the vehicle software/canbus/circuitry.

no clock spring for PQ platform and heated MFSW exist
over google - you can find how people modyfi current clock spring
after hardware mod ...... you need to strat control it
relay with timer, or toogether with seat, or heated windscreen.....up to you

Spacewalker - Do you have any specific examples you can share from a B7 NMS Passat? I've done many, many searches without finding what I'm looking for and can't find a completed project for a North American Passat. Perhaps I'm searching with the wrong words/terms.
I've been able to find several great examples for Golf MK7as well as other vehicles - the difference with the Passat is it was never offered. So all of the examples I find - people are simply purchasing the clock spring that does contain the HSW connector, adding the circuit with Kufatec harness, coding in VCDS, and everything works. I don't get that option, so I'm trying to get creative... the problem is I have very limited knowledge of the variations in the clock springs. Since I only have my original clock spring, I can't measure/compare/evaluate whether it's possible to buy a donor clock spring and use the center section of it and it's ribbon cable to modify my 5K0 953 569 BF. This is ultimately the information that I'm after.

I've found an instructable as well as a few other videos that show how the clock spring works and how to replace the ribbon cable - what I haven't found is the feasibility to modify one to get to a solution that will work. There are so many variations of the clock springs that I have no idea which center section would adapt to my clock spring. I'm comfortable making mechanical and electrical modifications - I just don't currently possess the necessary information to move forward.

That seems rather unlikely, since the NMS is not at all like the B7 that was sold in Europe, where Spacewalker is.

That's partially correct. While the SWCM "doesn't" support it I'm pretty sure the CC had it and CC was definitely a PQ car. I'm pretty sure it was controlled by the heated seats button which activated both.

You would have to open your SWCM and modify the pins to add support for heated steering wheel & then get a CC wheel that is heated (or a euro wheel that's heated, but again needs to talk PQ) and then you can do what Spacewalker said & run a relay and some wiring over to the heated seats button, if that's not in your car already.

Follow Up/Solved:
I've never been one to take the easy route so I continued down the path, hellbent to add the heated steering wheel!

As stated in the original post, I knew if I were able to complete this project, I wouldn't be able to embed/adapt the added feature through the vehicle.
Because the B7 North American Passat was never offered with a HSW, the hardware and coding were never developed and regardless of my coding skills or any other engineered solution I could come up with, it wasn't likely going to work or be worth the effort and hours required. I was perfectly content resigned to the fact I would have to control it independent of the vehicle and here are my reasons why:
- When remote starting, I didn't have to deal with trying to activate the HSW. Simply crank the knob to highest setting when exiting the vehicle, and when the vehicle remote starts it's already on.
- I don't have to deal with manufacturer determined temperature set points (i.e. not warm enough, wish it would be hotter). With the selector knob, I get to determine when it's warm/hot enough and then dial it down from there.
- This goes along the same line as above point... most modern vehicles will current limit auxiliary devices depending on full system draw and is often times the reason for sub standard performance of seat heaters and steering wheels. I now get to mindlessly drive down the road consuming more current than the alternator can output and end up paying for it with a potentially low battery later!

I'm happy to report that I've been using the HSW for the past 10 days and am extremely happy with the results. Its about the best $245.26 I've spent in a long time!
Breakdown on the spend: $132.87 for the heated steering wheel, $87.39 for the donor clockspring, and $25 for the controller w/selector knob.

A few more notes about the project:

- I tried many, many different avenues to route power and ground through the center of the steering wheel and absolutely could not come up with a reliable solution that would allow for the one and a half revolutions in each direction from steering center point. It absolutely had to utilize the clockspring to make this feasible.

- Before installation, I tested the controller and heated wheel outside of the vehicle using a car battery. I was mostly happy with the results, but the wheel took longer than I expected to get hot... and this was in a 70 degree garage, not -20 degree outside temp where I will expect this to perform admirably and the reason I'm installing it. I didn't have a whole lot of options when it came to off-the-shelf control modules - so I was limited to the current output of the purchased product. I pushed forward with the install knowing that it works and I would continue to look for alternate controller solutions. - After installation in the vehicle, the performance is the exact opposite of the bench testing.... now with the vehicle outputting 14.4-14.6V - the steering wheel heats up in under a minute. Within a couple of minutes, it's getting to the point you must turn it down. Now my problem is that even on the lowest setting it's too warm and have to toggle between 'Off' and lowest setting. I'm on the fence if I'll leave it "as-is" or install a 12V-10A regulator that will maintain a constant supply voltage of 12V to the controller and then deal with longer warmup duration.

- In hindsight, there was a fair amount of risk modifying my original clockspring without a backup on hand. I do have an extra vehicle that allows for these types of activities, but had I damaged/broke my original - the vehicle would've been down for a week or better - waiting for a new one to arrive. I'm happy to report that I was able to completely disassemble the original unit twice (once for learning/research, once to execute plan), make the necessary modifications, reassemble, install and everything works perfectly.

Clockspring and HSW selector pics

Can you share more information as to what controller you used. Did it come with a wiring diagram or do you have a wiring diagram? I am wanting to have HSW on my 2015 NMS Passat. Touareg has a similar wheel with heat as my Passat. They also have a button on the dash that can control the HSW part # 7P6 927 121 B. As far as clockspring, mine has 5K0 953 569 AE. Is there a reason I can't use 5Q0 953 569 B or (C).

I appreciate any more info you have on this.

Thanks

Kevin

Kevin - as stated in previous posts, you won't be able to utilize the button to work on CAN. The coding/option doesn't exist for the NMS B7 Passat platform. Also, there are no clockspring iterations that will plug and play either. If you go find images on fleebay of your 5K0 953 569 AE and compare them with 5Q0 953 569 you will see that the mounting tabs & connector locations are different. I've attached a link of my original and the 5Q1 Donor that I used to modify my original.

Thanks for the clarification and pictures of the clockspring. I'm comfortable with modifying one to solve that problem.

I would still like to know what HSW controller you used. I'd much rather use an aftermarket controller than have no HSW. But I have not had success in finding one. Any help with that would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry for the delayed response. I didn't get mine from ebay, but here is a link for the exact same one that I purchased: https://www.ebay.com/itm/373822280935

You will discard the heating element and cut off the barrel connector and wire it directly to your modified clockspring. As stated in previous post you may want to consider installing a 10A - 12V regulator to limit the voltage to the controller. When my vehicle is running the alternator output is 14.6-14.7v and the wheel gets uncomfortably hot. I mentioned this as one of the improvements I'd like to make but haven't yet.
