Bringing a MK4 R32 back from the brink

Hey all. I recently bought a MK4 R32 that was in extremely rough shape. I have just finished rebuilding the engine, doing all the maintenance and refreshing, and bringing the interior back to as close to showroom condition as possible for a 20yr old car. Next up will be bodywork and paint, but that will have to wait a bit. I’ve got a few questions about vcds tweaks and am looking for some insight from the community.

What is the process for being allowed to post new threads?

My problem is with the Immobilizer III:


My original key works fine, starts the engine, gives me no immobilizer fault, warning, or light. All good.

As for my replacement key (bought on eBay, new aftermarket replacement), it will start the car but I receive the immobilizer warning and flashing light on the cluster. However the engine is not shutting off, so I take that to mean the immobilizer has indeed defeated by United Motorsports when I sent in my ECU for performance tuning.

Is there a way to use this new key and not be constantly harangued by the cluster that the immobilizer has been activated?

When I go into vcds to code the new key via instruments, login, adaptation, channel 21 and try to change the new value to “2” I receive “error” in the test value box.

Yep.

I do not think you can match a key to a car that has had an immo-defeat in the ECU.

Immo-defeat the cluster as well? @EuroX or @Jetta 97 ....?

Immo message in cluster can be turned off, but I would need the cluster or dump from cluster to patch accordingly, also yes cannot adapt any keys if ecm is immo defeated.

Thanks for all the replies! I intend to send in the haldex controller to United Motorsports as well, for performance tuning, in the future. Easiest thing would probably be to send the ecm back to them at the same time and have them reenable the immobilizer.

Unless the consensus is it’s better to leave immo defeated?

Also, what is “the dump” from the cluster?

Is that just because they’re prone to being problematic as it is, so why risk it? Seemed to be working fine otherwise…

My thought for well over 20 years has been that immobilizers have left more people stranded, in need of a recovery, than they have prevented thefts. Are they hugely problematical? No. Would I disable the immo in one of my cars without a good reason? No. But if I had a 20 year old car that was already disabled, would I re-enable it? Also, no.

I don't recall what the Mk.4 "R" cluster looks like. Is the flashing immo thing just a simple light or is it it something in the cluster's display? If it's a simple light, a bit of disassembly and some black electrical tape over it will make it invisible.

The warning light by itself is not that egregious, the problem is it flashes. It also give you an audible and larger warning from the led display on startup.

I could live with the startup warning. I don't think I could live with the constant blinking light. LED-ectomy, or black electrical tape would be the DIY solution. Some (dis)assembly required.

With immobilizer delete you can not program key regular way with VCDS, On Immobilizer 3 Generation key has to see ECU and Cluster(Immobilizer) to be ON and pair to be able to finish programing.
