After resolving the injector problem and working fine, I started it up this morning and it shutdown after a few minutes of idling. I scanned for codes and got a 17746 CPS G40 code. I replaced the CPS with a known good unit and no start. The engine turns over but no start. I checked the timing belt and noticed that it doesn't turn the camshaft when I turn the crankshaft. It looks like I have to take the head off to work inspect the valves and pistons for damage.

Will do once I get back home late tonight. I fully expect to see major damage once I remove the cylinder head. It's too bad because it was running so good. I should have replaced the timing belt.

Hi Boki,

I removed the timing belt cover and when I rotate the crankshaft clockwise, the belt does not move. I will be removing the head to inspect for valve and piston damage after I get a good look at the timeing belt on the crankshaft.

The immobilizer code was from me playing around with a spare key that does not have a chip.

The belt was toast, every cog that contacted the crankshaft sprocket was sheared off

I'm sorry about that. How old was the belt, just curious...

I think that head removal is inevitable now.

Gonna need valves at the very least with head bolts, head gasket, timing belt kit and necessary gaskets for exhaust manifold and intake manifold.

Good morning. I bought it as a flip so I have no idea how old it is. Very likely original. I am planning on doing a leak down test just to get practice on doing this but I know the head needs to come off. Thanks

I read that the 1.8 is an interference engine so it's guaranteed to have valve damage. I trained to be a mechanic and practiced it for a several years but hurt my back and gave it up for a career in sales. I took up wrenching again after 40yrs as a hobby and because my wife wanted a beetle and I found out really quickly that I needed to do my own mechanic work. The local dealer was draining my wallet. I have been doing this now for over a year and I am on my 11th beetle. This is the first one that blows up in my face. I own a 2008 with the 2.5l engine.

Take real care when removing the rear chain tensioner lining the 16 links can be a mother being your first time.
They always look off 1/2 tooth mark the sprockets and the actual link in chain you can reuse this chain. You'll see... LOL
Good Luck

Hi VWTech, not sure what you mean by loot? I assume you mean the timing chain that syncs the two cam shafts since it's the only chain.

Thanks

Thanks Dr Sheldon. I plan on doing so before tearing it apart any further besides, I am waiting for the T55 x 6 inch 6pt torx bit. I also plan on going to the junk yard and practice taking a head off a 1.8 before removing mine.

Be sure to practise putting it back on - Might be wise !!

Good afternoon. So I reassembled it with new timing belt installed and it started right up but with a cylinder missing. I did a compression check on each cylinder and got #1-170psi, #2-160psi, #3-160psi and #4-0psi. I have determined that I have bent valves in #4. I'm now in the process of removing the cylinder head. Interesting how fast disassembly to takes once you have done it once.

So you removed a used head from a another car.
Are fixing your head or swapping head?

Good Luck

I think at this point I just want to take it apart and see how bad the situation is before deciding on fixing it or swapping it. I bought the car to flip it. I still have room in my budget to absorb these extra costs. More than anything, it's presented itself as an opportunity to learn. Up to know it's been more about fixing window regulators, door actuators and just general maintenance but this car has been a Pandora's box. The timing belt installation was a good experience.

Thanks
