Howdy folks-

I've got a problem that started intermittent and has now become more or less constant (though every now and then things will function normally). The car thinks the key is still in the ignition. When I pull it out, the chime still sounds and the radio stays on (if it was on to begin with). The engine shuts off no problem and the key turns just fine.

I replaced the steering column lock (this part) about six months ago, since the key was getting stuck in the ignition and wouldn't turn. The problem begin occurring after that. Seems likely that the two things are connected. My question is, would this be as simple as the ignition switch? The part I swapped in came with a new ignition switch, so I used it instead of my OEM one (which as far as I know was still working fine). Can I just swap back the OE ignition switch or is it more likely that there's something going on inside the lock cylinder?

thanks!

It certainly could be, but realize that they ignition switch doesn't directly switch all the things; it can't handle that much current, so it's really only a control circuit for a a relay downstream of the switch, and if the contacts in that relay aren't opening when the should, that would also explain your symptoms.

You should probably get yourself a wiring diagram and check what's going on with a meter.

Go for it - Somewhere there will be a small Microswitch that recognises the key is inserted - Pretty sure a MVB will exist for that !!

Have a good look it may well be within the "Switch" or around the column some place - That is it !! can't really be anywhere else !!

How about doing a scan and seeing if the electrical switch has any codes, usually it will have more than one for the switch. If replacing the switch, it can be done without removing the steering wheel etc, just remove the clamshell trim on the steering column and gain access to it.

Thanks for the tip.

Just to update this thread, it was in fact the ignition switch. This is probably the first time with this vehicle that the problem has had an easy fix in which something ancillary (and seemingly unrelated) didn't also go wrong. Thanks again!
