Hi guys,

So i just bought a fixer upper gt tdi. when i bought it i noticed the window wouldnt open or close and was open a fraction. today i took off the inner door skin to inspect the regulator and noticed the cable had come off of a pulley and caused the issue. so i put it all back together after mending it expecting it to work and i was met with some really weird results.

So one thing to note is by the look of it the previous owner installed a new window regulator. when i opened the door skin i noticed the window wasnt even attached to the regulator properly.

So basically i go to close the window all the way and the window switch does nothing then boom, down is up, up is down, sometimes no response atall. i checked codes and looked at measuring blocks and when i hit the window switch the computer is reading a whole load of different inputs.

Something else i should add is iv noticed interior lights dont come on when i open either doors and vcds always detects the doors as closed. So im wondering if these issues could be related or if they could be seperate issues, and im wondering what might fix the window issues mainly. I imagine the lights not coming on would due to the door lock module on the divers side. I had similar issues with my gti and when i replaced the module it was fixed. But i didnt have these wierd window issues.

I should also add in the codes it mentions the passenger side switch. But from investigating there is no noticable issues with the passenger side window or either switches for it so im wondering why it might be indicating a fault even after clearing codes.

Here is my scan:

Lamp works fine when I turn it on manually. I did notice when I opened the passenger door once the light came on for a second then turned off almost instantly. What should I check with multimeter and what am I wiggling? Sorry ! Haha

Broken wires in the door shuts - In the condom thingies !!

Easiest way to fix is take the door off, 3 bolts, put it on a trestle and pull the loom through.

Ah balls. No way I can solder it without taking the door off?

Try it, why not.

If it doesn't work, it's really not difficult to remove the door.

If you look in Erwin, Workshop Tab - The official notes are that Soldering is forbidden !!

A soldered joint is brittle !! Especially if you make the join where it is subjected to movement is vulnerable !!

The joint needs to be made either side of where the loom will be subjected to movement to establish a good repair !!

Yes can be done with the door on !! that Involves crawling !! In my house I see that from the ones that dont earn !! Annoying !!

Ok thanks mate ill have a look, may just strip back and add more wire, if not ill go down the scrappy and see if i can find a new door loom. I assume the door loom plugs into somewhere under the footwell on driver side? cheers!

Think it is a lot easier than that - Pull the gaiter off at the Pillar and have a peep.

I’ll take a look, I tried the wiggle trick and didn’t really notice any OBVIOUS difference? However I have noticed if I move the window using the key in the lock it doesn’t have any issues besides being a little slow but I think it’s because the new regulator wasn’t fitted flush. I think door detecting as shut could be locking mechanism, but will check this for the inside switch!

Rare for the wiggle trick to work !!

You will find more than one bad wire in there, Right at the end and not easy to get to. - The trick is to pull the door card off and pull the loom through in to the door. then get better access by removing the speaker or whatever makes life easy.

I find it easiest with the door up on a trestle, only 3 bolts ! but can be done in Situ.

Is that including unplugging the loom from the car? Would make a lot of sense to repair it with it unplugged then just running the loom back through?

Makes sense in my head but I’m sure there’s a reason it’s not the easier option?

Just my way of doing things !!

To me it is easy to whip the door off and work in comfort - I get that door off in a about 3 minutes with one arm behind my back 🤣

Ahhh fair. Well in which case I’ll check the loom for damage and see what I can do, if all else fails I just found one on eBay for £12 but may just try taking it out and inspecting it fully and see if I can mend it off the car, might be the easier option in my 1 man team.

There you are - 2 good options for you to look at - Buy the £12 one and fit it - Repair the old one for next time !! May go in the other side ?
