Hi guys,

So I just bought a gt tdi, MOT mentions a failure due to ABS light on and esp switch not functioning.

Now I have bought the car and I’m not seeing any ABS light, only on first key turn until it disappears as expected. But interestingly I get no engine light or traction light. And as mentioned esp switch non functioning. Iv tried a working switch to no avail.

I spoke to PO and they said at the garage they, and I quote “turned the light off using the code “so I can only imagine in software they’ve disabled the light or somehow disabled traction control. What would I check to get either the light or the esp back to functioning again so I can find the underlying issue that was causing the problem in the first place before the garage disabled it?

Thanks!

FIRST
Post the Autoscan

Go into Instruments and do an Output test for the Cluster Lights - See if the y all light up !!

Not un common for the LED's to be knocked off or covered with Black Tape / Silicon

Hi guys so i did a scan.

Also i tried to go onto the instruments section and do an output test but theres no option for showing the esp light on the dash. i noticed this is the same in both my gti and my gt tdi so im unsure if this option is in another menu. The ABS section output tests dont do anything cluster related and only the pump itself.

Old Mk.4 style clusters won't have Selective Output Tests at all. However, I'd expect them to have a Sequential Test, and one of the items in that test should be a "Segment Test" or something like that, which lights up everything that can be lit. Note, this is from memory, from ~20 years ago, so I could be wrong.

So on further software investigation i discovered in the ABS module if i read the values theres an option for "ESP Warning light" and its stuck to ON but everything else toggles between on and off to flash. so clearly theres some sort of hardware issue, most likely previous owner covering the bulb. i will inspect the instrument cluster next.
