We aren't familiar with cars that have this 03-ABS and 44-Steering assist type but I believe G85 is inside the steering rack on this model. I would check this Advanced Measuring Value in address 44-Steering Assist:

[*IDE04448*] Steering angle sensor: angle

If you can get it to read close to 0.00° try using Security Access code 19249 followed by Basic Settings: [*MAS00815*] Steering angle sensor

If the live reading isn't close to 0.00° please let us know what happened to cause the G85 issues.

3565 degrees..... so only 9 turns out of whack?

Is there some back story on this? How did we get here.

Car had airbags deployed so on these power steering goes into crash shutdown. You need to restore to factory settings then do online coding / parametrization and then steering angle basic settings but for some reason it doesn't allow to complete basic settings.

Removing the minus terminal from the battery, wait 30 minutes and put it back. Has it been tried?

Did the suspension and or wheel take a hit?

Made no difference

Quick log of 2 values in address 44 shows discrepancy. That was done with a slight rotation to left right - values all over the shop - obviously not calibrated. However second value stays same.
First value is position of the motor. Where would the second sensor be? Steering rack is just a basic mechanical rack with no electrical components.

Steering rack is just a basic mechanical rack with no electrical components.
Ahh, that makes more sense. This started to sound like the RoW market setup where they combine a conventional hydraulic steering rack with an electro-mechanical motor on the steering column.

Since the VIN was modified I had to work for it ... but this is the VIN specific PL24 page for that #44 unit:

Normally the steering angle sensor is in the electro-mechanical steering rack -or- the clock spring so this isn't something I have firsthand experience with but if the wheels took a hit, and transferred that shock through the steering rack and column, it may be damaged. You can certainly dig through the component locators, wiring diagrams and similar but I think the easiest sanity check is to code G85 out of address 44 entirely.

Use SA code 19249 followed by coding from:

010000000000000001010201010001000000010101

To:

010000000001000001010201010001000000010101

.. and cycle the ignition. Then, check IDE04448 to see if the data is stuck on 0 or reports NA.

Either way, I think that would easily allow you to confirm the sketchy G85 data was produced directly by that controller. Just make sure to code it back to the correct value to make configuring the replacement (assuming it is faulty) easier.

Tried to code it out. It makes no difference, still reporting constant angle at 5953.5.
Is it safe to assume column/motor faulty and swap? It is of course possible it was damaged in a collision.

OK. It sounds like damage occurred but I don't know if replacing the module only is the fix since we aren't directly familiar with how that sensor system works. If the module references something mechanical on the column, or there was damage in-between the column and motor, it may be best to replace the entire thing. Hopefully someone with access to this system in their market and hands-on experience can chime in.

Next, although it sounds like all diagnostic hope is lost and parts are needed... while scrolling through the list of Basic Settings this one caught my attention:

[*IDE05745*] Steering angle sensor: move to mechanical center

If someone had removed the shaft between the steering rack and column, let the column turn roughly 16 times (which sounds crazy but that's the math on 5953 and 360°) and then reconnected it there's a part of me that thinks that BS would be interesting to run.

In conclusion, I don't think you have anything to lose by testing some of the undocumented basic settings groups.

I'm sure I tried that with no result but will give it another try.
It certainly looks like a mechanical fault so best to change the whole column. But then again I'm thinking to swap the column with motor and leave original module that has already been adapted with odis?

Since they are sold separately (meaning you can purchase just the module) that's probably the best thing to try first.

Just attempted at plugin (without installing) another steering column (although donor was also accident damaged) but the 5953.5 value still won't change

[*IDE05745*] Steering angle sensor: move to mechanical center
This comes with an error request out of range

Interesting. Was that an entire used column with the #44 control module bolted to it?

I've seen this before, this 5935.5 value is just a value it shows when it's out of calibration.
However it will not allow to calibrate?

After factory reset, the module at [Address 44: Steering Assist], should go to

[03-ABS] and Login 40168. [Do it!].

Next step: 04 - Basic settings
select the item in the menu: IDE05146-ENG114972 - basic settings - ESP unit

activate the default settings and wait 10 s. Expected result completed successfully.

I understand that the engine is on, the wheels are straight, as is the steering wheel.

I am extremely pleased to say that after this procedure it allowed me to complete calibration and all the lights have gone off. Many thanks.

Thanks for the feedback.

Post a new Auto Scan, without errors and we can mark the case as solved.
