Accessories is insufficient. It needs to be in run position.

Ok, it's in run position. I shouldn't have said accessories. It's in the position that you get pushing the key in entirely withOUT pressing the brakes.

Yes it does, more than I would like, lol. A lot of dash lights and buzzers.

Your J533 has a 20 pin connector

Pin 9 or/br > DLC 14
Pin 19 or/bl > DLC 6

Pin 1 rt/ws > SB24 Fuse
Pin 11 Br > Ground

Pin 14 > Sc7 Fuse

Now you keep telling me have done that ?

You do realise that in that scenario only the Gateway J533 has any physical connection to the DLC Socket - Along with Pin 4&5 Ground - Pin 16 Positive ??

I not you are getting a Volt drop to 11.5v at J33. 11,5v is not ideal however if the Ground is good then the Potential Difference of 11.5v is enough for J533 to operate correctly !!

You make no mention of what you are measuring at Pin 14 - J533 - That is a question !!

Pin 9 or/br > DLC 14
Pin 19 or/bl > DLC 6 - Have you checked these wires are pinned correctly, Not Broken, not shorted, not Contaminated ?

Are you checking those Voltages with the scan tool Connected ?

Have you really either de-pinned or cut the remainder of the wires on that plug - Here we are Isolating the J533 from the rest of the car ??

Now if you cannot get communication then you have a bad J533, a bad scan tool - Bad wiring Checks - What is left ??

That is purely because you have No or Bad Communication Network - Of NO diagnostic value at this point in Time !!

Your priority / lifeline is to communicate with J533 In the car first and foremost !!

1. yep, and.....?
2. Yeah, I understand that. Makes sense since I depinned all the rest.
3. J533, pin#14 - Key off = 0v. Key "on" = 12.1v
4. Pin 9 & 19 (J533)are pinned correctly and not broken.
5. I do not check voltages with a scan tool attached
6. I depinned the wires from the connector of the J533, its isolated
7. no communication still. Doubt J533 is bad, and since I have the original J533, Ive tried it as well and nothing changes. Could they both be bad.....sure but unlikely. scan tool is not bad, works fine on other VW's. Additionally, I have a quality scan tool I use for every vehocle except VW's and it cant communicate with anything either. Bad wiring checks, always possible, Im not perfect. Whats left? How about bad relay? bad J519? Or, how about an incorrectly pinned ECu?

I know we bang / clash heads on this but my intention is 2 fold - to help, offer the best advice I have - I come with vast experience, and then learn from what I read - some very good talent here !!

Doubt J533 is bad, and since I have the original J533, Ive tried it as well and nothing changes. Could they both be bad.....sure but unlikely.
The FACT is that if a J533 has Power and Ground then is connected to the DLC correctly - Furthermore isolated form the car and world then it should communicate.

So could they or are they both bad !! ?? Well I think they are !! or your wiring is in the car. If I had a similar VW here I would not hesitate to go unpin as I have advised you to do and prove my point. Are you in a position to do that ?? Good valuable research on Product Function ??

ANYWAY !! You coded the Bastard ? On the bench ?? How ?? - With what connected and what not ?? REPLICATE ON THE CAR WHAT YOU DID ON YOUR BENCH !!

scan tool is not bad, works fine on other VW's. Additionally, I have a quality scan tool I use for every vehocle except VW's and it cant communicate with anything either.
Noted !!

Bad wiring checks, always possible, Im not perfect.
None of us are perfect - I have made some school boy errors just 10 minutes after collecting my pension :banghead:
So check that wiring again - All you need to do is
  1. 2x Power Wires at J533
  2. Ground at J533
  3. 2x Wires to DLC from J533
  4. No other wires should be in contact J533

Whats left? How about bad relay?

A bad relay would stop power to the J533 Can Gateway - Would it not ??

bad J519?

How would that affect comms to J533 - It is isolated - not connected

Or, how about an incorrectly pinned ECu?

Again - How - it is isolated form J533

Sincerely. Am i making some logical sense here ?? Or am I just the village forum Idiot here !!

To all
Does this J533 need anything other than Power, Ground and comm lines to DLC for it to light up and talk to VCDS. ??

One more thought - Have you got ground at 4 & 5 DLC - Power at 16 DLC ??

One more thought (2)-
Do the OPTIONS - TEST thing with your VCDS tool plugged in

I don't think so on this vehicle is looks like gateway sends power and or signal out to wake up dash based on what I'm seeing from the wiring diagram. So it has merit. @hillburnsh I would be taking a close look at J519 and all of its powers and grounds as well as all relays associated with it. IS a good known J519 installed and coded to the vehicle?

I have to keep an open mind here !!

I've looked at the diagram too !!

You are suggesting that J519 was removed from the Vehicle that Comms Loss would be global including J533 - Are you also suggesting that if the J519 and the Cluster was removed from the vehicle that Global Comms lost would be the result ? - Well Would it ?? Go try on a car !!

Just to recap
I'm stating I can communicate with the gateway (off the car/bench test) with VCDS through my breakout box with the ECU adapter.
that is in #7

The question from that is "What is different when in the car as opposed to on the bench !!??

Perhaps OP can post a photo of how exactly he had that set up for context - Picture = 1000 words !! A wiring Diagram of the Set Up would be almost Orgasmic at this stage :p A Video and it really would be game over for me :p

@hillburnsh
Straight question !! Is there more to this than is shared in this thread ?? I get that feeling, that funny feeling, shooting up my spine - Got it a lot when the kids weren't working, at uni, and they would phone being all nice at the offset ??

@Dr Sheldon you need to stop twisting people's words. I never said any of the things you're implying so pump your brakes it's annoying.

Thank you for adding to the conversation, seriously. Just off what you just asked me, I honestly for the first time believe that between you and Dr Sheldon,, we might be able to save this car from the salvage yard.

Your question about the J519 is exactly why and what I posted on this forum. For some reason my head is stuck at the J519 as the culprit. I know the relays are all good as I have a "Relay Buddy" (tester) and have checked and rechecked the relays. Which is why I bought a replacement J519 and posted on here on how to pull the codes off it to program the new (replacement) one. So NO, I do not have any validation that my J519 is good or bad. In fact let me look through my notes because I believe I have some discrepancies (ie grounds, powers).

Cant readily locate me page of notes on the J519 amongst over 300 pages of notes from when this started. So, right now Ill go through the J519 and test each and every wire for power and ground with key OFF and again with key ON and posted what I get.

Something to understand, is that in my FSM, it is "incorrect" and shows my J519 as having multiple T52 connectors. My car does NOT have T52 connectors at the J519, it has slots A-L
A - T11
B- T12i
C- T12k
D- T11a
E - T16g
F - T8t
G - T12m
H - not applicable
I - T2cp
J - T6ap
K - T10s
L - T2cq

Please point out where it shows T52 connectors as I have the factory repair manual and wiring diagram and nowhere does it show t52 connectors. It is dependant on manufacturing date. Vehicle was made before november of 2010. It was made August 24 2010 to be exact

Man....I wonder if i paid a lot of money and got the wrong FSM?!?!?!?!
But my WS manual (VIN specific) has the right connectors, which is why i keep referring to it.

Is a replacement J519 installed and coded? Also T12M/1 with ignition on do you have voltage on that pin? Is J59 opening and closing as needed? Verified fuse for J59 is good?
