2012 Touareg TDI - Very rough idle and odd deviations

Hello all!

Rig was running fine yesterday, and I went to start it this morning to an extremely rough idle/misfire nothing I've experienced before. Revved a bit to help warmup and it was not happy.. No codes though :(
Whiteish exhaust as well, not sweet smelling or anything like that.

Ran an autoscan, and threw in some deviation data at the bottom which caught my eye. Curious on what everyone thinks..

For a quick catchup, over the past 3~ months i've replaced both lower intake manifolds, and the upstream pipe from the turbo to the aux cooler, and the tube from the aux to the egr itself as they've been cracked for sometime.

Thank you for your post, the Auto-Scan and the additional injector deviation data.

Based on what we have seen in known good vehicles, the "Standard_deviation_of_main_combustion_cylinder_2" seems too high. Was this with Key-On, Engine-Off?


Although this is a different engine (a 4-cylinder vs. a 6-cylinder), the data should be the same.
Please note, there are three separate controller channel maps in the post below.

The first map is with the Key-On and the Engine-Off where all are at [0.00], the second and third are with the engine running and all the deviation values are very close to each other.


I suspect (as you may also) there is a concern with #2 Injector. You could remove a glow plug and see if it looks wet or different from the others.

If you do swap an injector to see if the concern moves or end up replacing any of the injectors, be sure to adjust the "Injector Quantity Adjustment (IMA) and Injector Voltage Adjustment (ISA)" Adaptations accordingly.

Appreciate your response. These values of deviation were with the engine-on which also caught me off guard as I didn't expect them all to stay at 0.00.

Did a bit more metrics after that data grab, and increasing the rpm bumped the deviation on cylinder #2 up to 30 degrees. With the rpms not able to stabilize meaning it just jumps all over.

Here's a graph snap for reference, granted I expected the other cylinders to be above 0 degrees but then again I'm not super familiar. (top green is cylinder #2)

Also worth adding... definitely more white exhaust which gives off a pleasant diesel aroma.

So... I swapped injectors around and it did not follow the injector.

However... the more I poked around in vcds the more I wondered if the other cylinders should be reporting any standard_deviation data at all? And that it makes sense for cylinder 2 to be showing deviation data and not the other cylinders.

I say that because.. I know the glow plugs on #2 and #5 have the combustion sensor as part of it. However, when looking at deviation data and cylinder pressures cylinder 2 is the only one reporting anything when I would expect cylinder #5 as well?

Based on that map you linked it clearly showed all the cylinders reporting deviation data/etc when running/idle. But the passat seems to have a combustion sensor on all four glowplugs from what I could tell.

I know yours is newer @SaVAGeSoot but is there any chance I could see what your standard_deviation and/or cylinder pressures read out? Just to calm my mental on what data I should/shouldn't be seeing.

So... I swapped injectors around and it did not follow the injector.
This tells me that there's a physical issue with Cyl #2.
You need to do a compression test on that cylinder. (well, all cylinders really, but at least #2 and one other to see how out of whack #2 is)

Yeah, that's what's up next I'm just trying to sort out why the rest of the cylinders report nothing and if that's normal or not. Would think at the very least cylinder #5 would return some sort of standard deviation due to the sensor in the glowplug.

Since we're currently basing cylinder #2 reporting deviation as a potentially bad thing, but the maps I've seen from other TDI engine's (the one linked) show near-matching deviation combustion for all cylinders.

There should be an IDE that you can read off cyl 2 and cyl 5 which will tell you the pressures.
I do recall having looked at mine once, but I don't have the IDE handy....

Would think at the very least cylinder #5 would return some sort of standard deviation due to the sensor in the glowplug.
I suspect that the ECU does not rely on the GP pressure sensor to calculate those deviations, but it instead calculates the acceleration of the crank based on position and can thus determine which cylinder need to be "adjusted" to keep everything smooth...... if it was relying on the GP pressure sensor, it wouldn't have anything to compare in the case of the CNRB where it only has one of those....

As for the ECU, yeah I don't know of a way to see what it relies on. In the case of combustion deviation I'm just assuming it "could be" the GP considering the type of sensor it is, but that's a very far out guess haha.


End all, i'll test all the cylinders tonight.

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring.

Would that sensor biting the bullet cause this mess? I don't know how/what those values would impact in terms of the entire combustion/timing logic if any... Only one way to find out I suppose.

So... I haven't swapped the GP's yet but..

Compression test checked out to be within spec. (Yes i know.. should've taken that time to swap the GPs but it spaced my mind)

However, at random I was thinking.. Let's unplug the egr valve!

Low and behold with the egr unplugged the treg runs flawlessly (minus the newly generated dtc). I pawned a new egr valve of the same model off a friend but the issue prevails if plugged in..

Any ideas? At this rate I'm extremely unfamiliar.

Going to check myself this weekend if the gps come out as planned...

I haven't had the treg for nearly a month as I took it to a local "vw" specialist shop for an "opinion" and let's just say... I'm never going back :)

Compressions finally done... On a cold engine since that's where the issue lies.
1 - 350
2 - 400
3 - 390
4 - 350
5 - 350
6 - 380

I saw in the manual that the max difference is 5.. Just 5... which i'm assuming means 5 bar? So based where i live it's 5x30? = 150 max psi difference. That seems wildly large but..

Any grand ideas?

1 bar = 14.7 psi so 5 bar is 75 psi which you are within
