Resolved Audi A5 F5 (B9) 2017 Steering Angle Sensor - Internal Fault, B1168 04

Hi all,

We've been carrying out engine replacement works on this car, a 2017 Audi A5 2.0 TFSI, unfortunately when the engine was being removed the steering wheel was allowed to move past it's end point & looks to have created an issue with the 16 - Steering wheel module, fault code B1168 04 - Steering angle sensor - internal system fault.

We sourced a used item with the same part number & fitted it with the ribbon aligned correctly & the steering straight ahead, the fault persists & appears to be a 'hard DTC' which cannot be cleared & the date stamp on the fault remains from when the steering was first allowed to turn too far.

Has anyone overcome this fault? We're happy to grab a new unit from Audi & fit it, but would like to be confident we aren't missing something.

See live data readings below also, I've seen on others threads regarding this fault code, that once the 16 - Steering wheel module sees more than a certain amount of degrees turning it will always show the 819.1 degrees steering angle & log the B1168 04 fault code permanently, which is unable to be cleared.

It needs a new J527 or it needs to be unlocked by reading mcu on the pcb of the module and have a fresh flash written into it to fix it. Not something you can do yourself unless you have the knowledge and tools. So replacement of J527 would be the quickest and fastest way.

Note this module has not failed, it is simply software locked due to the steering wheel being turned past the norm. Kind of a shit move from VAG because with the right tools and knowledge it is possible to unlock the mcu and read the data from it and restore its function vs spending 500$ for a new unit.

For the most part plug n play. You will need to zero the steering angle sensor and perform basic settings on sensor. But it will meet all critiria to be able to reset it so it should be problem free after that. I just did one yesterday on a 23 a5. Should be the same part number.

4N0907129PA is what I put in that was the latest revision. Depends on options in the vehicle.

Well, brand new Audi Steering Module fitted & all working well. Part number was 4N0907129PE, which replaced our original 4M0907129HA part number.

I first set the - IDE08696-MAS02406 Steerg. wheel angle sens.-Steering wheel angle: internal value - as close to 0.0 degrees as possible, even with an internal fault in the steering module, this figure worked fine whilst turning the wheel.

Disconnect battery with the ignition switched on as specified in the workshop manual for working on pyrotechnics.

Replaced the steering wheel J527 module & refitted the steering wheel, airbag etc. Reconnect battery & begin the mission of getting rid of the absurd amount of codes stored everywhere.

Next up to calibrate the steering angle sensor (if you go to live data now you should see the steering internal angle & steering wheel angle figures are identical to each other) this vehicle did not have active steering (1B), I believe there is more to calibration if it is fitted.

Parked the car with the steering wheel as close to 0 degrees as possible.

Procedure below copied from another thread on here:
