Resolved Cooling System Fill/Bleed (CNTC Engine, 2016 Audi A3)

Hi,
Newbie here.
Not sure if this is VCDS related or just me being clueless, but I can't locate the commands I believe should be present, so I'm posting it here.....
It's only repair related in that i can't do the repair without the commands.....please relocate as appropriate

2016 Audi A3 2.0L (8V),

Goal: Drain, refill, and bleed coolant system.

Steps taken:

1. Drained coolant (lower rad hose)
2. Filled coolant -- now understand why vacuum filling is a must
3. pulled 0.2" vacuum on 90% full coolant system. 2nd time, vac filled back to 0. Significant amount of coolant replaced air

I would now like to use VCDS to bleed the system.

I cannot locate

Adaptations>> IDE08287 Bleed Cooling System
Basic Settings

• IDE08087 Bleed Cooling Circuit
• IDE04795-ENG98891 Bleed Cooling Circuit (Low pressure)

in their expected locations.

understanding was that I needed to do with engine off, reservoir cap off, but ign on

• Connect with VCDS (using vcds HexNet Mobile)
• Select Controller
  • Select 01-ENGINE
    • Select Security Access >> 27971, go back.......
  • Select Adaptations>> IDE08287 Bleed Cooling System >>Active, DoIT,..back..........
• Start Engine
• ENGINE 01
  • Security Access
  • Basic Settings
    • IDE08087 Bleed Cooling Circuit run till complete
  • then
    • Turn Engine OFF
      • Security Access 27971
      • Basic Settings
        • IDE04795-ENG98891 Bleed Cooling Circuit (Low pressure)
        • Repeat 3x total.
        • check for faults
  • Adaptation Bleed circuit active to>>>nonactive

Truly appreciate anyone who can help me figure out why the settings and adaptation are not showing.
I have done this with all doors closed. and the fob on the seat. Only thing open is the hood and driver's window.

The instructions you are referencing are for VCDS on a PC, not VCDS-Mobile. I would highly encourage you to find a PC for running this process, it will let you follow the procedure as written. But if you want to try to follow it in mobile, you need to go to [Cloud Functions] to do Security Access, Adaptations, and Basic Settings.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I'm probably using the wrong terminology thus creating confusion for which I apologize.

The hex net adapter I have plugs into the USB port of my Windows 10 PC.
I am running VCDS from that laptop with the hex net adapter attached to the USB port.

The only reason I mentioned VCDS mobile was that it is included on the back of the hex net adapter label. My bad.

The procedure I listed is one I have tried to pull together from a few different sources, one being a post here on this forum and another from a YouTube video indicating how to do this. However, I am unable to look at the commands I referenced above.

If you are able to direct me to a pre written procedure that exists, that would be awesome. However, I am concerned that the selections do not show up in the dropdowns on my VCDS program running on my PC.

Any further ideas?

Goal: Drain, refill, and bleed coolant system.

Please try the following:

VCDS Basic Settings for Engine coolant Fill and/or Bleed

Prerequisites:
- Follow the Official Factory Repair Information, "Coolant Filling"
- Ignition On (use batter maintainer) or Engine running

Using VCDS, connect to the [01-Engine]
- Select the [Basic Settings-04]
- Use [IDE01550 - Service position]

Important Notes:
- This Basic settings will OPEN all the coolant valves in the engine coolant circuit.
- As long as the Basic Settings is 'Active', the valves will remain OPEN. To end the procedure, click [Done, Go Back] and check for fault codes.

Followed steps above.
Heard Valve open in front of engine bay.
Did another vacuum fill. Only got to 10" but still pulled in addl coolant (using OEM 50 50)

There are no other procedures I can find.

By the way, did you follow the 'Coolant Refill Procedure' outlined in the repair manuals mentioned earlier?

For the benefit of the community of the forum, I have summarized the procedure below.

Coolant, Draining and Filling
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Cooling System Tester - Adapter - VAG1274/8-
- Cooling System Charge Kit - VAS6096-
- Coolant Collection System - VAS5014- or Shop Crane - Drip Tray - VAS6208-
- Hose Clip Pliers - VAS6362-
- Refractometer - T10007A-
- Safety Gloves
- Protective Eyewear


Add 10L (10.56qt) coolant with the right mix into the reservoir. Check the mix ratio
 - Attach VAG1274/8 to the coolant tank. Connect VAS6096 to VAG1274/8.
 - Place the drain hose in a container. Close valves A & B. Connect hose (3) to compressed air (7-10 bar).
 - Open coolant circuit valves
- Using VCDS, connect to the [01-Engine]
 - Select the [Basic Settings-04]
 - Use [IDE01550 - Service position]
Open valve B (indicator should turn green).
 - Briefly open valve A to fill VAS6096, then close it.
 - Keep valve B open for 2 mins (indicator should stay green).
 - Close valve B. If the needle isn’t in the green zone, repeat the process or check for leaks.

- Disconnect the pressure hose. Open valve A to fill the system with coolant from VAS6096. Remove VAS6096. Fill the system to the “max” mark.
- Reinstall the noise insulation (refer to Body Exterior; Rep. Gr. 66). Set temperature to “HI”. Turn off A/C (ensure LED is off).
- Start the engine, run at ~1500 RPM for up to 2 mins. Add coolant to the overflow hole while running.
- Close the coolant cap securely. Let the engine idle until both large coolant hoses are warm. Turn off the engine.

I have that manual except that the page to which you refer is blank under the coolant filling section. Apparently I did not get a complete manual.

Those steps represent the vacuum fill procedure with pulling a vacuum, seeing if it holds steady to detect leaks, then vacuum filling with coolant. Now that I know what is on that blank page and what is not on that blank page, it seems they are not doing any additional bleeding for this engine cooling system.

Granted there should not be any appreciable air in the system. I think the problem comes in if, like myself, you do not drain the block, but only the radiator and exp.tank, then trying to fill it without a vacuum fill.

Sometimes we learn the hard way.

I'd recommend draining the system out and restarting with the correct vacuum fill procedure.

Make sure you have a suitable amount of vacuum to back fill the system, plenty of videos about of correct usage. It's essential on these EA888's to vacuum fill in my experience.

PS no need to drain the block, just pull off the lower radiator hose (US passenger side?) refit and carry out vacuum fill as per the manual.

Much more came out with the cooling system valves open compliments of VCDS.

Vacuum fill minus 0.25 and steady.
Idled for 1 hour, temperature up to 105C.
No leaks no overheating. Heat more than adequate.

Topped off cool after a few short drives.

Drain and refill is a pretty standard procedure across the MQB EA888 engine platform as far as I've seen. Drain the coolant from the points mentioned in the picture, refit the removed hoses.

Carry out the vacuum filling of the coolant system, then follow the steps in the next picture.
