In a Kessy car, with the ECU off-line?

hatSorry didnt scroll through the log. Log showed malfunction but then when i scroll down it said cannot be reached. I didn't see that. In this case start with basics powers and grounds at module.

So, forgive my ignorance, but I am at "gateway" module, which in the wiring diagram is shown as Data Bus on Board Diagnostic Interface, I believe? Trying to test power and ground to the module first, and then figure out power from ignition. From my reading, it looks like ignition is green. I was able to test a ground, but not sure if it was ground for module or not. Also, I'm not seeing a entry that designates power to module. For this first one, are you able to tell me from looking at this which supplies the power to Diagnostic Interface?

I would be checking can communication status to ecm and tcm via gateway ide channel. 0 is no good 1 is ok. IF no comms I would be checking power and ground to ecm and tcm or following diagram to see where 15 power comes from. I will assume most likely comfort module, access start or central electrics. This is where I would start this would be easier in my opinion.

No viewing IDE channel in the gateway module the module can tell you if the module your looking for is talking to the gateway or not. No probing involved just a laptop and VCDS and a few key strokes. IF IDE channel shows 0 then module is not talking to gateway if 1 is show communication is ok. If zero then you need to check power and ground at affected module or find where power is coming from then looking at fuses and so on.

No viewing IDE channel in the gateway module the module can tell you if the module your looking for is talking to the gateway or not. No probing involved just a laptop and VCDS and a few key strokes. IF IDE channel shows 0 then module is not talking to gateway if 1 is show communication is ok. If zero then you need to check power and ground at affected module or find where power is coming from then looking at fuses and so on.
Still chasing this one down. I was able to verify power to the ECU, but am still trying to determine how to view the IDE channel. I posted a reply, but I was hoping someone would be able to jump in and tell me if I am even looking at the right area?

Is there something you are aware of in VCDS documentation that covers this process? I think I was on the right path, but I'm not sure and don't want to jump to conclusions

ERWIN. Wiring Diagrams, Powers, Grounds, CAN Lines with a Scope !! And a Micro Amp Clamp to confirm the Direction of CAN Transmissions - Bi Directional is a Must !!!

Have you done that successfully ?

Not sure what waffle is.

Pretty sure I'm allowed to drive and not sure how that relates to my question. Maybe I was asking about IDE because I was told by EuroX to check IDE channel which didn't require any scope or additional testing components so I figured I'd start there.

I did check wiring diagrams and follow power from battery to ECU. I am relatively certain now that issue is with communication on Can Bus, so I'm working on learning how to test with my scope.

Again, this is all new to me as, up until now, I've never used VCDS for anything other than making my gauges sweep or roll down windows with unlock button. I have never used scope or anything like that so I'm learning as I go, bro!

Also, how could I destroy the car by checking IDE channels or testing power and ground at components?

Well, I am realizing that as well! Thanks for the guidance. I don't mean to bite the hand that feeds me so I appreciate the advice.

Micro amp clamps are in the process of being ordered

I would disagree, in this field quick and dirty method always wins. NO ONE will whip out a scope for a no start on EVERY single vehicle. Quick and dirty always wins. Scope only comes in useful if you think you have a dirty signal or a sensor that's on the frits. Rule number one is always check the basics. Power, ground and comms. It looks like gateway see terminal 15 and terminal 30. Question is if your getting terminal 15 and terminal 30 at the pin at the ecm?

I do agree its alot of data but it covers mostly everything I wanted to see. So at this point I would check for power and ground at the module if you havent already.

I have a Pico set up in the workshop on a trolley which I switch on with the kettle It is ready to go !

Then I have 2x Handheld 2 channel Scopes

Snap On M2 https://www.techshopmag.com/tool-of-the-month-new-verdict-m2-two-channel-scope-meter/

and the Fluke 123

Then a couple of Power probes

And an assortment of bulbs wired up for load testing

A decade box

A Signal Generator

PWM controller


With those few items I can test and prove 90% of the work thrown at me.


For example I had a intermittent Cooling Fan Failure on a MINI. Using a break out lead I put the scope on each of the 4 relay pins and the 5th on Temp Sensor so I could see what 30, 85, 86, 87 were doing Set a slow timebase on the scope and let it run. Left the car in the corner to run. It took best part 3 hours and god knows how many times the fan switched correctly to catch the failure !!

10 minute set up time !!


I could monitor that with Teamviewer from the other side of the world !!


The scope works !!

Perhaps I should rephrase and say "it works for me"

I have a pico scope pwm box and signal generator. I only deal with vw and audi vehicles at the shop and the occasional high end garbage like ferrari, maserati and a few others. Scope comes out as a last resort as I can check just about everything with my powerprobe 5. Plus my ODIS has a scope attached to it for checking signals and such. Again unless I have some oddball faults It ain't coming out. Bypassing a relay is a few seconds rather than setting up a scope. Just my opinion. Everyone does things differently.

I did check for power and ground at the pins on ECM and it was good. I have been avoiding the scope until now because it intimidates me, but I'll never get better at using it if I never do. I like that both of you have approaches that work for you and I will adopt one or the other as I think both right now will get me closer to the answer. I am also learning a ton from this and that was really my goal. I have been going down the CAN-BUS route currently. Specifically looking to see the resistance throughout the modules. Battery disconnected and probing CAN high and low gives me about 3.4 ohms of resistance. Judging by what I understand thus far, that should be more around 60 ohms, correct? 120/2?

If I am not mistaken, this could be a short in either a module or CAN-BUS wiring. Am I on the right track here or does a gateway module negate that testing method? I also had the idea to test resistance while systematically disconnecting different modules on the car or trying to "split" the harness somewhere halfway to try and determine whether the issue lies in the front or rear or car rather than trying to locate and pull every module, especially if I am not certain that this low ohms reading is indicative of a short in a car with gateway module. I haven't been able to find any documents yet that explain resistance expectations on this vehicle. I even looked through wiring diagram for terms like "resistor", "terminating" and "ohms" and got nothing.

I realize both of you have work and lives outside of this one dude (me), so I'll do some more legwork and get some hard values with test methods you've recommended before asking any more random questions. Thank you again for even taking the time to help me as much as you have already. I'd kill for the opportunity to shadow someone for a day at their shop

I would not rely on a resistance measurement for any clues as when your measuring resistance you are measuring anything that's connected to those wires as well like the modules and so on. I normally check each can line for voltage this will tell me whether I have a signal issue or not. I would check both can high and can low at affected module. For proper can communication you should be a 1.5 volt separation between can high and can low. If you have 4.5-5.2 volts on one or the other its safe to say they are shorted together somewhere. That being said the current status is no comms to ecm and no crank no start correct among other issues?

That is correct. And that is the route I will be taking.
I am autistic and sometimes it's difficult to focus on one task without overcomplicating it with other tasks. I am taking heed of the recommendations I have been given and focusing on one small thing at a time, like "Do I have communication/voltage on one line (ECU high/low) at module?". Like I said, I was avoiding scope due to being intimidated, but last night I was able to compensate the probes and got some attachments to be able to back probe the correct pins in ECU
