For last 40+K miles Had TPMS MIL illuminated, although verified pressure multiple times. Couldn't VCDS scan as lost module through move 2-3 years ago. Now ABS, ESP, Airbag and Yellow steering lights. All OEM parts in this area except front brake pads. ABS doesn't work correctly when MIL off (slower pulses) and not at all when MIL on. Also has immobilized the cruise control (won't set speed).

Working to get wiring diagram.

Was figuring on replacing sensors first and seeing how that improves / changes....except I don't think that'll address this code?

Not concerned about Battery - voltages look OK...haven't checked fuses - Why>

That could be as straight forward as 2 wheel speed sensors But on a VW - Not quite !!

The way forward is to graph all 4 on VCDS and note if the signals are completely dead or just wonky with dropouts ?

00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Right (G44)
003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent

00283 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Left (G47)
003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent

The Mechanical failure element of those fault codes suggest that it is the reluctor / phase wheel that the sensor looks at is faulty - Not the sensor itself.

That may be a ring on the driveshaft or integral to the Wheel Bearing

Sorry Gents my Computer experience is more software than hardware. By the time I was involved with hardware diagnosis, we did board level replacements , not component. No "Silly" Scope (as my brother the MS- EE used to call it).

Induction rings are imbedded in bearings. Will need to figure out how to chart real time wheel speed data on VCDS. if I can't determine will post on appropriate board.

VCDS Graph is the closest you will get - Not Real Time nor Raw data as is processed many times - BUT !! Nigh on Real enough for your need today !!

OK Forum, here are the results.

Background: I live on a 4 mile long crushed limestone and sand "paved" county maintained "graded" (dirt) road. Yes driving it often kicks up allot of dust (dry) and mud (wet - rain).

Test Scenario - Bride and I went to Kroger and Walmart to pick up groceries (50 mile, 70 minute round trip - joys of living in the country side). Speeds from 30-75 MPH.

For the first two miles Front Left and rear right were 0. Others matched (varied within 1km/hr - haven't checked tire pressures in two weeks- may be cause of +/-1).
Note: hadn't figured out how to get graph to work at this point.

Then about 5 minutes in (2 miles) the left front sensor started jumping all over the place. Both high and low of the other two that continued to match (+/-1).

Then about 3 miles in (8 minutes) the left front steadied and matched (+/-1) the other two wheels. My theory is some muck that may have been hindering the sensors - caked on the ring or similar - got thrown off. Another joy of living on a dirt road - it is always rough = vibration and shock to break the muck free.

About 4 miles in (turning off dirt road) I got the graph working, and it shows the three operational sensors (L&RF + LR) matched (+/-1).

I didn't graph all the way there, was trying to figure out tool = playing. However when I did look, speeds matched (+/-1)

Graphed most of the return trip. Not until over half way into the return trip did I catch any noise out of the RR sensor (purple) It only showed up on three total screens (which I am sharing). Minimal noise.

This is taking a higher speed corner about 10 miles from home.

The third screen is at the beginning of our dirt / bumpy road during our return trip. It went back to a solid 0 a mile - 1.5 miles into the last 4 miles.


My next steps -

pull left front and right rear wheel. Check connections, check for muck, check induction ring, and any other visual cues.

Left front, check dust/spray shield for rotor, and see if anyway to avoid Muck contamination.

Remount tires and verify air pressure.

Retest quickly to see if:
1) variance (+/-1) resolved/minimized.
- no action at this time if unchanged

2) Life from RR sensor.
- If no life in RR order quality replacement (Bosch, Hella, Walker - sorry gents Genuine VW is ridiculous - open to other suggestions). Replace and retest.

Report back to forum on results.

Thoughts? Suggestions??

We keep a old Tiguan in a similar situation at our cabin in Apple-Atcha. No ABS issues. However, it has much lower mileage on the odometer.

Thoughts? Suggestions??
Your wheel-speed screen-shots clearly shows issues with the sensors that the ABS module has fault codes for.

Not Walker. Get 'em from specializes in VW/Audi, like FCP Euro, ECS, etc. They're almost as likely to sell you parts that work as the dealer.

The Right Rear (Blue Trace) is clearly not right - The front left is off the scale !!

My next steps -

You can graph those sensors with the car on a jack and spinning the wheel by hand - Gives a good indication

Also wave a magnet past the sensor to see if it reacts on the graph !!

It's been a month and I've replaced the right rear and left front sensor (twice). Right rear is working well Left front had dropouts. Red line is new Hella sensor on driver (left) front.

So I replaced the LF sensor with a KARLYN / BREMI / STI and got similar results, continued drop out.

2 sensors 2 vendors, same results thinking not sensor. Next step maybe wire? remember that I had a problem with the previous to making any changes where it was completely dead, then it worked erratically, then appeared to work. But when it worked I had no dropouts (see graphs above- no dropout spikes).

What do you think I should try next?

Have you checked the magnetic ring that the LF sensor senses?

The common things are the magnetic ring, the wiring and the ABS module - check them in that order.

The magnetic (induction) ring is imbedded in the bearing/hub module and inaccessible for visual inspection. Is there a way other than visual (looking at it) to inspect/checkout this ring (without an oscilloscope)?

Yes, there is, but you will need to remove the bearing from the hub to access the ring. So at that point, considering your mileage, you should probably just change the bearing. But that is your call.

You're looking for inconsistencies in the pattern; any breaks or segments missing is a bad ring. Also, there are less expensive test cards on Amazon if you are interested.
